Guardian Australia My People: Kung Fu Family
In the video series ‘My People’, Guardian Australia explores the peculiar subcultures and niche communities bringing people together across the country. With the breakdown of more traditional communities, these new groups of shared common interests are more important than ever.
‘Kung Fu Family’ tells the story of the Australian Jow Ga Kung Fu Academy. The inner-city Sydney school taught a brand of martial arts based on respect and disciple for over thirty years, but the sudden passing of its founder, SiGung Randy Bennett, plunged the school into crisis.
Despite the loss, a strong community of teachers and students banded together to ensure the school not only survived, but flourished

i remember visiting Sifu Randy in 1987 when I first moved to Sydney as an instructor in Chow Gar Tong Long. I went to some of the Kung Fu schools and talked to various Sifu's . Some were not so friendly but Sifu Randy was an amazing man. He welcomes me in, said I could teach my style in his hall if I wanted to and introduced me to a number of his students. No ego, just open arms welcome for a fellow martial artist. I used to catch up with him often and believe he was a true Sifu/Sigung - and a really nice person. RIP Sifu Randy Bennett - you never knew how much you taught me....
