Hello. Well I would say it discourages slugs to move on them. As they need moisture to move and the shavings dry out pretty fast on the top. They don’t like dry and rough surfaces. How many days from germination before transplanting? How long does it take to be bitter? My romaine lettuce is already 2 months old and only has a few leaves with the biggest leaves only about 3 inches long. I'm afraid they will be bitter before the harvest time. 😂

  • @Liap

Hello. It depends on the growing conditions. The seedlings grow very slowly in cold weather. When they have 4-5 true leaves is about the right time to transplant them. What is the variety You are growing? They have bitter taste when grown in hot temperatures. Or when they bolt (which often happens in hot temperatures).
