Love the tips. I learn each time I watch. I pull my lettuce head with root when ready to harvest whole head. This way I put it on the kitchen counter in a cereal bowl Of water. The lettuce keeps longer as I can’t eat the whole head at one meal. And it looks so fresh and pretty on the counter.

James continues to be my favorite garden person. Energetic, informative, goes to the point, and never, ever complains about his fan base! Thanks, James!

You are an inspiration and God loves you. You where the first one to inspire me to make a food forest back when I was just wanting to live off the land. I lost all my friends my wife cheated on me And stole all my money and now I live alone in he Appalachia mountains in a small home with land nearby. I spent all I had on supplies for this food forest am foraging all my vgetabls and non bulk dehydrated foods until I can grow some. I currently live off the land and do all my cooking lighting and essentials with solar I depend on this land for survival this food forest and trashed land I just purchased that im cleaning up is my only hope and will be doing it this season with a potentialy broken wrist. I found an abundance of everything in nothing and am happier then I ever was when I had everything I thought I needed. God bless you James without this technique and your wisdom you shared I dont think I'd be ale to survive how I need to. God bless you James I hope you recieve everything you want in life one love to you :) if your ever in the Sussex County area let me know I have 3.7 acres in a state forest with a nice stream for tucky to cool of in

Your dog reminds me of my dog in the garden 😄 My Teddy is still just a 5 month old maltipoo but he follows me through every task and sometimes he will try to help me weed & he loves digging the holes for me to drop seeds in, we've been planting this week & every day he goes out with me and sniffs every single plant to make sure they are still okay, I guess 🤷‍♀️ plus he's even learning to keep the chickens out of the garden. Gardening is so much more fun with a little buddy to help out! You have great content, thanks for sharing!

Boy James, you throwing out some fantastic knowledge on the lettuce. I had no idea how delicate they were, I would prefer starting seeds in trays as well. I tell you, you have a lettuce for evey day, you will not get tired of eating the same over and over. Good thing you start seeds elsewhere, that little Tuck likes to get in on the action. Hey James and Tuck. I have to say its very inspiring to see all of what you have accomplished with your garden. Its made me start my own garden in my back yard 3 years ago. And when im not successful in something you and Tuck inspire me to keep growing. I have planted more varieties and plants this year than i have ever done and really excited for this year. I really love these videos and i love seeing Tuck. Thanks for teaching me to be a better gardener.

The response I got from a couple people I offered nice leaves to...was that it wasn't already washed. They prefer to buy from grocery .

The lettuce has done so great with this cool spring! I saw a cold out there in my food forest today! He popped up out of the leaf mulch!

Love starting transplants. Beats the pest cycle. Less losses I pit the seeds on opposite corners and if both germinate I split the transplants

Me too. I got almost 100% germination of my tomato seeds, so I have transplanted lots of doubles to red solo cups. If they grow enough by June 6, I will have to give plants away. I have room for only 28. I have at least 6 varieties. Canning and freezing this year.

I'm growing that Forellenschluss lettuce, along with Merlot, Ruby Red, Lollo Rosso, and Tom Thumb.

Tuck is one hell of a gardener. He’s never afraid to dirty his nose.

James, your garden and presentations are great!👍 I am a fan.

I started lettuce seeds in 2 Greenstalks on my porch to avoid the majority of pests. It holds 30 lettuce heads each so we can pick leaves as needed for sandwiches or side salads.

Good thing you're talking about protecting the lettuces because we're going to see some insane heat ramping up this upcoming weekend.

I have a type of leaf lettuce that reseeds itself every year and is tender. So rainy on the West Coast this year so heaps of little seeds have started up. Love growing lettuce

@@ravenwildspirit just leaf lettuce: red & green varieties. I always let 1 or 2 go to seed every year and end up with 15-20 growing mid-May next year!

Tuck is a good boy, protecting the garden ♥

It's great to see people growing their own food, and much healthier for both the body and the mind.

Miners lettuce is also know as Winter Purslane, it generally grows in Spring not Winter, mine is growing now and I can make a salad with it, but it's also starting to flower. So it really is a misnoma to call it winter lettuce.

I direct sowed some lettuce seed in early December 2021, covered it when it started to grow and it sort of stayed dormant but it’s taken off and they’re huge! And yummy!

Hi James. I wanted to let you know that I built a hinged hoop house for a steel raised bed this fall. I planted in it a little late, by the time I had everything done, but my plants all survived the cold weather of last week. I live in SE PA, in Zone 6B, a half zone colder from you. I only put one layer of plastic on my bed, but then cover it with frost cloth (just right on top of the plastic, although it mostly just touches at the top). I let it drape to the ground where I weight it with bricks. When it got really cold, I put hoops inside the plastic hoop house I built, and put another layer of plastic inside. I uncovered today and almost all plants survived (all lettuces, kale, cabbage, cilantro, etc) other than those that were touched by the inner layer of plastic along the edges. (there was ice on top of that inner layer of plastic). I hope Tuck is well, and look forward to more of your videos.

Have you ever had trouble growing parsnips? I have never been able to grow them from the bought seed. Any chance of a video with how to grow parsnips successfully please.

I really like the way you cull the seedlings; it’s genius! Most people just pull them from the soil, disturbing roots of the healthiest plant in the process. Cutting them at the base makes so much more sense, especially for very sensitive sprouts like lettuce and carrots.

I’ve never cared much for dogs, but your Tuck is the cutest, sweetest little good-hearted companion. You are blessed. Also love the info on this channel.

The only thing I know that is even vaguely lettuce like that will grow in a central Texas summer is Malabar Spinach. Though i do have a shady spot and I'm gunna expirement with that Solar Flare just for fun.

Chard and leaf amaranth also work for me in summer. Green chard especially. Amaranth is lovely.

I'm in New Zealand, I've been watching you for a while now, your garden is great. Its the beginning on winter here/late autumn and I put lettuce in about 6 weeks ago I will be able to harvest lettuce, daikon, spinach, pak choi, wong bok and a few other Chinese green leafy veges all winter. But they bolt so fast in spring and summer here.

Always very enjoyable to see you . Your energy is contagious thank you for all your videos.

Another excellent video. I've had good results sprouting lettuce seeds in hydroponic pebbles in a net cup and water then transplanting.

Can you send Tuck down to GA? We have a LOT more things he can chase away from our garden than just squirrels!!! Thanks for the channel and all the videos. We did an experiment with the square foot gardening this year - and it worked well enough that we've gone down the rabbit hole to do even more next year - including two more beds (and one will be in the front yard for all our salad greens too!). Appreciate the fun and energy you put into the videos and also the way you demonstrate things as well! Your channel and videos are the main reason we are moving forward and going to try even more next year! :)

Just transplanted my lettuce seedlings two days ago and they have already doubled in size! I kept thinking they were tiny still for being 2 months old but I think they just wanted more space.

You can probably grow some inside. I do that here in NJ for winter and late summer

I've always had a problem with lettuce seed germination and transplanting out ,it's very sensative.Good video James very well done as always.

There's a company called Sow Easy that makes pelleted seeds of all the tiny seed varieties. They take the tiny seeds and make them about the size of a BB

On May 10th I didn't know what I was going to plant in my front porch planters, but figured I'd scatter some seeds and might actually get plants started by the time I get around to filling the planters. Well today on June 9th, I harvested some lettuce from those scattered seeds since I still haven't planted them up 😆🥬 There are also some basil seeds germinating in the back of the planters. They're so quick! I also started some from seed and I believe some germinated in only 1 or 2 days! It was incredible!

This was so helpful! I had no idea how "lightly " to plant lettuce seeds. Package & others say 1/4in... tried & didn't work. I did get a few sprouts(very few) but didn't last long, maybe to much water as you mentioned! Going to try again! :) TY

I'm learning how to grow lettuces. This is my second year. I've actually gotten the items I need to turn my garden into a hoop house so I can grow in the winter too....or at least I hope to lol. Thank you for all you do ❤️

To reduce transplant stress, I'll mix the starting soil with the native should on the edges of the hole it's planted in to create a transition zone.

Do you have some recommendations for summer lettuce? It’s hot in California and they tend to bolt very quickly.

Mostly just heat tolerant ones like the solar flare, the lunix, the slobolt. Those are some ones that have done well in the summer heat for me, not sure if that is completely comparable to your summer heat though lol. Good variety selection, choosing a microclimate, mulching, and a 40% shade cloth should help things along I think

Keith, avoid lettuce with dark leaves, like reds and browns. They absorb heat and wilt badly. Stick to hardy green ones like Cos. That's been my experience

Spinach bolts like crazy on me. I like staggering lettuces and also beets and chard for reliable leaves in summer. I also grow leaf amaranth, which is amazing in summer. Meanwhile, I will keep starting lettuce, since the heat gap is really only a couple months for me. If pest pressures get too much, use tulle to float over. However, I noticed as long as I keep a few brassicas and radishes about, the pests go for those first. Then the lettuce might be affected, then the chards, etc. Usually my lettuces, chards, amaranth, malabar spinach stay mostly pest free.

Hey Team Tuck! I like eating my own lettuce over anything in the Supermarket. When I was growing up, my father said that Lettuce was an antidepressant and all I know is that I feel healthy and satisfied eating lettuce every which way! I use it as wraps for Asian dishes, on sandwiches, and even grilled on the BBQ. The colors, shapes, flavors and manner of harvesting has enough variety to add even more interest.
