Growing Food with Fish in the Forest | Self Sufficient Living | Off Grid Homestead

Self sufficient living in Canada utilizing natural resources to grow fruit and vegetables in a dense forest.
This week, I use fish remains as fertilizer to grow tomatoes and peppers and I bring in bales of hay and leaves from the forest to mulch my vegetable and fruit garden to preserve the rainwater that falls on the garden. Without mulch and organic material added to the garden beds, the water typically evaporates and drains through my sandy soil during our hot, humid summers.
Because of the global pandemic and shutdown of the schools and the economy, I have changed my priorities to provide shelter and food to my wife and daughters until things return to normal. In addition to the food forest that I'm developing from previously raw and relatively unproductive forest, I am preparing my cabin for additional food production and food storage while building my firewood supply for the coming winters.

30 years ago when I was an avid gardener I always had a subscription to Mother Earth News. They had an article about tomatoes using fish carcasses. 3 x 3 x 3 foot hole. Three large carp in the bottom of the hole. Sand, mulch, peat moss and some other stuff went in the hole. They planted one non determinate tomatoes in this witches brew. It covered the entire side of a two story house. Point being, the fish were deep. The nutrients tended to rise and the tomatoes went after them. Kept the animals away.

You learned the first principle of growing food, you must first grow the dirt and after, just ad more mulch never till it up only the first few inches so as not to disturb the microbes Great Job. Remember to let some of you plants stay in the garden until they die and throw their seeds. The more you do this the more you start having volunteer plants and they seem to know when the best time is to come up.

Shawn, someone in a post several weeks ago, asked you , "What are you needing to prove?" And watching you in the garden just now...I have the answer. You are not trying to prove anything. Shawn, you love the land, this earth, the living water. I know that feeling. And the only way , I know how to honor that passion in me...is to immerse myself in it. That is why everything you do seems like you are a perfectionist. But that is a wrong assumption. You, my friend are Holy, and you treat the land, rivers and wildlife as sacred.

Shawn, I have some years of experience with growing various kinds of fruit and vegetables , and other edibles,in an Ontario forest and lake Huron area. You will do fine. I just have to say that eventually I resorted to a solar powered electric fence for the field. Nothing kept animals away during harvest time, despite 2 large dogs, various deterrents, and even me (I am not small and non intimidating) standing there. Raccoons and deer were most common culprits, and birds. If you are planting blueberries and raspberries, you will need netting. Birds are relentless. Good luck and all the best.

Those companion plants supported each other and were the three staples in their diets. Along with game, fruit and berries gathered. complete nutrition for thousands of years. Oh, they never missed the nut gathering either for minerals and the oils and protein.

Here, it would only be a dog or a fox. Not so for you. If you need nitric solvents, then pee on your garden every morning first thing. You don't have to share! It will ward off predators and improve the soil!😁. Regards Stephen.

First thing to plant should be potatoes and cabbage 1st it May. Waiting for last frost is a good idea! Yellow Sweet Spanish onions will store well for winter! Kennebec potatoes store well for winter! Yellow and red potatoes don’t store well! Neither do purple or red onions! Cabbage and carrots will store well! Turnips do well in storage! Oak leafs sour the ground! Herbs grow up by the cabin! Great video ! Also late cabbage is to store! Plant seeds in July keep watered when they get 2 to 3 inches tall dig up and transplant same with late cauliflower and broccoli! Brussels sprouts seed now and harvest after frost! Stalks will keep in freezing weather so don’t harvest until you want to eat them! This is how I raise by kids we farmed 1500 acres of produce in Michigan! Stored a lot for winter! Feeding 3 boys is a full time job!

Over a 20-year period, students from the University of Washington tossed the fish from a stream on to a river bank. Data shows the nutrients from the rotting flesh boosted growth in the area's trees."There was a significant increase in the growth of the trees on the side that we fertilised relative to how well they have been doing prior to the experiment."

We used to do this when i was a kid. We lived in the bush where there was no road and you only had what you carried in on your back. It was a great life. Our garden thrived because of all the fishing we did

I’m just so proud of that garden, and of you how you turned that place of rocks and trees into something one can be proud of. You are a special kind of man, I have to admit. You always end up doing what you say you’re going to do. I believe that’s what ya call integrity.

Make some cold frames with the old windows you bought. You can start your seedlings in those you’ll get a much longer growing season. The cold frames could be full of lush salads.

As per usual, taking meticulous care with the vegetable patch, I’m a great believer in “you get back out what you put in” amazing the fish carcasses transferred from one area to another? Amazing input to the soil? And so close to that total self sufficiency 👍...so pleased for you and your wife, best wishes and kind regards from 🇬🇧 UK.

Flashes of lightening woke me up at 4 am this Saturday morning, so I decided to watch your video as I watched and waited for the rain to start falling. Still waiting. The dry lightening here in Southern Oregon is a dreaded event each summer, as we are in a drought like so many areas. Your video inspired me to get dressed and get out into my own garden at daybreak to see how things are coming along. Your forest garden is so impressive. I can’t wait to see the fruits of your labor!🥦🥕🥒

Looking at the overhead shots at the beginning of the vid shows just how much you have progressed... You have probably put more effort into getting the garden and out-buildings ready than you did getting the cabin built.... just wish people realised how much effort you put into building your self reliant area as well as doing all the video editing... it takes a lot of time and you combine it well.... thank you Shawn for all you do... It's well appreciated here.
