Wilderness Homestead, Bear Proof Chicken Coop Build, Step 1

#homestead #logcabin #offgrid
Continuing with the creating of my wilderness homestead, I build an oak log base for a bear and wolf proof chicken coop and I plant cool weather vegetables in our newly created forest garden beds.

It never ceases to amaze me, how you can take a gigantic log (a huge damn log) lying in the forest, covered in ice and snow, looking like it would take four adults to carry; and drag it about by yourself, debark it, set it nicely in place and hack the top off so it is flat. amazing.

Me too! One thing I found out is a log is relatively lightweight at one end. I talked to an old timer who moved 1300 lbs pianos by himself. When I asked him how he did it, he said they're always lighter on the end. Plus he had tricks that he used. Balance, pivot points and prying up is the tricks Shawn has learned. Plus he's stout as a mule. Vaughn

This was a nice 'release' from the pressures of life! Thanks for your time/talents shared on this vid Shawn. I was happy to hear that you've been given a greenhouse. It gives you yet another 'option' for planting if other gardens do not do as well as hoped. I like the sound of you having a well/pond nearer to your cabin to draw from. If what you are building is a 'chicken coop' against bears...it looks to me that it would also be 'Goliath' proof! Personally (in my limited knowledge of all things) I would think that all those feathers would make a chicken unappealing to bears unless desperate. You must know otherwise, or would not go so such lengths for a coop. My Lord, the work! Know what I would luv to have if I were in your shoes (and it's good I am not, as I would never think things out as well as you)...I would want a mulcher, and clear trails and lay mulch all over the place to connect the buildings...but then, I'm just enjoyin' a dream! Health and God's Blessings to you n' yours!

Shawn... I’m in Sudbury, - we’re almost neighbours... and I was born a couple hours north of Gravenhurst., so I REALL;Y relate to your shallow soil issues. My veggie garden is 1200 sq. Ft. And every shovelful down to 16” has been through a 1/2” screen. The guy who dug my basement with a huge Koehring shovel said it was the most difficult ground he ever dug - recessional moraine. Big bonus is that I did that when I was only 30... 75 now... and that does make a little difference in my strength and energy levels... but I still get up every day ready to do whatever I can towards my own level of self-sufficiency.

Two things: First, and most importantly, Cali is one of the best things about your videos. Her antics and personality are great entertainment. I don’t know how you aren’t just laughing all the time. Second, I’m a nurse and I feel like I’m bending over and moving lots of weight often. How does your back survive all this? Not so much the lifting, but the bent over or hunched position in so many of the tasks you perform? Better question: IS your back surviving this? :) Thanks so much for your great videos. I still show people your 5-minute compilation video of the original build of the cabin to get them hooked. They often do.

Well richard m....i am a nurse too, have been for 40+yrs. Your back doesnt bother you when you are young it waits till you get older. The nsg load was 5/6 pts per nurse. Thats a lot it goes up if someone calls off. When you hit about 50, give or take, i noticed my back couldnt take it anymore. But i had been in a car accident & hurt my back n neck. So its diff for everyone but back then i never felt anthing & was strong enough until i started getting older n stopped working out b/c i got sick and that was it. I can see now all kinds of mistakes i shouldve avoided then. I had to go on disability & i am miserable most of the time. So pls be careful with HOW you lift. Of course i am a women & not built as strong as men but everyone as you well know can over do it. God bless n keep you safe.

Do you actually ever sleep? Your mind must never stop. You come up with the most amazing ideas. A lot of work but great ideas. Great photography of the lake and water. Especially with the oak leaf under the ice. You amaze me every week with what you get accomplished. I know you probably don’t think so but it is mind blowing to me. I would play with Cali all day. Lol. Keep up the great work and stay safe and enjoy your family.😘

I noticed the subtitles, so thoughtful of you to think of people who can’t hear. I am very much enjoying to learn from your fantastic work and I love to be able to see the beauty of Canadian nature without actually travelling there. Many regards from Scandinavia! 🌲🌳🍁🍂

Hi Shawn, I have learned tremendously from you just from watching your AMAZING vlogs in the last week. A huge THANK YOU for sharing your impressive wealth of knowledge, journey and hard work living off grid. I can't help but be AMAZED of how you build things all by yourself out in the middle of the vast wilderness! Can't wait to see your greenhouse, and garden in full bloom! So very generous and kind of those who gave it. Praying for you and your family's continued health and protection. Love to you all and adorable Cali. 🙏🏻💗🙏🏻

I got to say first, Cali is still the best 4 legged girl in the woods. She has the best around her to play and investigate and of course a family that loves her. Second I'm blown away at how much you have accomplished there in a short time actually. Now the coup being built and gardens. Shop being coming up soon. Wow!! The time you put in is beyond what some people even can grasp, not just the actual work but the video's along with your work. I don't know how anyone else looks at this but you put in a lot of effort for us to enjoy and or learn from and Thank you. Well, I am leaning into that going all out homestead I hope in the near future. Thanks to your input through your videos and talks. The job is now gone so I will seek property soon. I am still deciding to cut the thought of buying up north or staying right here in central Texas. I will be 61 in about 10 days so that weighs on me somewhat with my stake at hand. I have to consider I know the country and growing seasons better here and of course family closer. So most likely will be choosing land here close by, but its not ruled out just yet to go as far as Alaska. Regardless I will still keep up here as much as possible. Who knows, you might say or do something in a video that sets my mind straight. ?????? lol. Thanks again for putting up all the videos and sharing all that work, great ideas, the inspiration, motivation, beauty and family along the way. And most of all Cali. She sure is The queen of those woods. PS> laughed when you was rolling out your critter control wire. I rolled out the same exact wire yesterday to keep puppies from the neighbor out of my garden.. lol

Ive been a sub since you had just a few tiers layed down for the cabin walls. I knew you were serious your first winter. It looked like a tough one but you held out and kept improving your self reliance. Youve come a long way since then and i just wanna say great job. Your paradise looks amazing.

Shawn watch in your area for some old farmstead and usually you can find old time apple trees that are fairly tough and dig up some young ones to add to your sustainable food production.

Hi again SHAWN So good to see open water again and you starting your new projects! Hope that darn snow is done now so you can move forward. Cali was happy to get in that cold water that didn't slow her down a bit. Can't quite picture all you're doing now but really look forward to see it all take shape. It's been quite a long time now and many projects that have been finished so this summer will be an exciting one as your homestead continues to grow and come alive. Stay healthy and safe and thx as always for sharing...
