Now that there's a pending chickpea shortage, it's a good time to grow your own. A good crop to grow as part of your survival food garden.
After 55 yeas, or so, on this earth, I just discovered that I love chickpeas! I was just wondering about growing them in my small garden and after watching your video, I'm going to give it a try this season! Thank you!

@@CaliforniaGardening what chickpeas are perennial and what are the other crops you have in the video? Thanks!
Mexican grocery stores usually have fresh garbanzos beans! Very hard to otherwise, this is definitely the first plant I’m going to try growing in my home.
Im here because i soaked my chickpeas rinsed and kept in fridge for a week only to find them germinated 😂 will be planting them
I’m so excited to try this. I’ve already grown. Jalapeños tomatoes green peppers cucumbers sunflowers 🌻 and morning glories all from seed. Mother Nature is so amazing! Thanks for making this video.
fantastic video - clear, concise and fun!
Great video! I’m growing Garbanzo beans for the first time and didn’t know what to expect. I was surprised by the beautiful foliage. I’m glad you showed the flowering process. I would’ve been surprised also by the tiny blooms. Thanks for the info. 💚
Thank you
This is an excellent tutorial! Thanks for sharing how to get more leaves vs more pods.
Excellent job on explaining. You are a great teacher.
I love fresh chickpeas 😊
Thank you so much for this wonderful demonstration.
Thank you!
Thank you so much, California garden. This is a great and new idea to bring to my fall garden. Will start it today to see whether I will get a harvest.
Absolutely beautiful!! I didn't realize they were single pea pods. I grow tons of beans but never garbanzo beans. Those really are compact and beautiful! I may try next year. In my victory garden. I have my main garden and my experimental garden off to the side. It's where I test different types of plants and how they'll do in my extreme weather and if you can just grow a hearty garden just by throwing stuff out on the ground. Turns out...you can!!

Part sun (4 hrs) or full sun (8)
Also, I have eaten chickpeas, my whole life, mostly in a dish called pasta faziole , and hummus, of course and I just learned that you can eat them. Green had no idea.
I loved this video. When you roast the chickpeas whole, do you eat the roasted shell? Or would you take the chickpeas out of the shell like a roasted peanut? Have you grown sesame seeds? I would like to see how they are grown.
@CaliforniaGardening
Жыл бұрын
Thanks! Good question, I roast the chickpeas with their shell on but only eat the chickpeas inside and throw away the skin. The chickpeas get cooked nicely inside the pods when roasted and you get that roasted aroma when eating as well, as you remove them from the pods. Delicious!
How do you prevent pests
Very informative. Thank you! Do chic peas need full sun? How can you tell they are ready for harvesting?
@CaliforniaGardening
Жыл бұрын
Yes they do need full sun. I usually harvest one or two to check before harvesting more
Beautiful video. Everything was so well explained. Thank you! Maybe I missed it, but what was the duration of your crop from when you first planted them?
@CaliforniaGardening
Жыл бұрын
Glad it was helpful. You can start harvesting in about 60 days but up to 90 or even 120 days since sowing. Planting was done 4 weeks after sowing.

Will try growing them next June when it is our cold season Only thing is that monkeys will probably come and eat them
Thank u for sharing your idea, i am interested for that, where can i buy some seeds, i am from phillipines
this is the best video! I've been following it and my chickpea plants are currently flowering! I need to ask though, some of the leaves are yellowing (probably due to too much sun) -- how much light do you grow your chickpeas in? Mine get about 5hrs of afternoon sun -- is this too much? Thank you!
@CaliforniaGardening
Жыл бұрын
5 hours of afternoon sun is OK. Chickpeas dont like too much heat though so the leaves get yellow when the heat is excessive
What PH would you suggest for the soil? I have had huge issues with other crops as I didn’t realise how important for certain things it is to have the correct PH.
Great info! I'm in CA 9b and have a greenhouse; could I start from seeds now(Sept) then transplant to greenhouse, or should I wait until Jan to start from seeds? Or just do it now and see for myself.
@CaliforniaGardening
8 ай бұрын
September is too early. Wait till Jan to start!
What is your guess on how many ounces of chickpeas will one plant produce? Thank you
Bhai, I have the black chickpea I love the flavor of them when green- but can you share with me how you would use the leaf? bless
Do you inoculate the seeds? We cut the plant down to the ground but leave the roots in place. The earthworms appreciate it and because we inoculate, the remaining roots are providing nitrogen back to the soil. I enjoyed your video very much. Black garbanzos make for the best hummus!
@CaliforniaGardening
9 ай бұрын
Thanks, no we do not inoculate the seeds
Interesting! I ate some green chickpeas from my garden today, they are so sweet, kind of like a pea. How do you prepare the leaves to eat?
@CaliforniaGardening
9 ай бұрын
You can cook the leaves with lentils (just like spinach)!
If you sprout them in water is it the same as germinating (them in paper towels?
@CaliforniaGardening
Жыл бұрын
The water helps the seed coat soften. The paper towel acts as a medium for the seeds to grow roots. The plastic bag traps moisture and increases humidity, which creates the perfect environment for germination
One time I soaked chickpeas to cook the next day but forgot them for 2 months. When I got them out the water completely disappeared and they sprouted long shoots both ends. I didn't plant them tho😢
Can I grow chickpea direct on filed after soaking?
@CaliforniaGardening
9 ай бұрын
Yes!
So what happens after the plant reaches maturity and you uproot it? You have to plant their peas (with pods) again next spring? I assume that means keeping some peas/pods over the winter?
How often did you water in the first step when you planted the beans in the small cells?
@CaliforniaGardening
Жыл бұрын
I keep them moist at all times, so water as soon as the top surface dries out. Seedlings have shallow roots, so any dryness and they will suffer. Remember to drain out the excess water from the bottom.

Chickpeas are one of those foods I would have never thought to grow my own. But look how easy and how pretty they are. Question... Do they require daily watering? I would like to try these in my community garden plot at UCI (same zone as you) but I'm only there 2-3 times per week..
@CaliforniaGardening

Regarding watering, I water them as I do my other veggies like tomatoes. They are on micro drip sprinklers for 7 minutes a day
@billyd7628

chickpeas, lentils, and peas are drought tolerant since they are from the middle east and grew naturally in the deserts and scrublands over there before being domesticated by the Mesopotamians. the roman armies often harvested wild legumes growing in northern Africa and the levant to supplement their rations.
So after you get the pees out of the plant. The plant dies. It doesn’t keep giving like a fruit tree?

If chickpeas are nitrogen-fixers, wouldn't they benefit the soil more if you cut them off @ ground level, & leave the nitrogen-fixing roots in the soil? It's a question I've had regarding peas, but I'd imagine doing this to both would be more beneficial than pulling the whole plant.
