We Indians eat fresh chickpeas in curries and also in winters we roast them in outdoor fire with peels on. I cook fresh chickpeas pulao every winter. Loved this episode, lots of love 💓💓

YES!!! I'm Mexican and steamed fresh green chickpeas with chili powder and lime juice was indeed my signature after-school snack lol! The best of the best even just steamed alone are delicious! And nutritious!

Love green chickpeas raw, roster, sautéed, stir fried, curried and such. It’s delicious in every form 💚
In my Mexican family we always steam or bake them fresh. I never heard of people drying them out until I found out chickpeas and garbanzos are the same thing lol

My daughter and I eat sooooo many chickpeas in our vegan cooking. One thing I found- The rabbits were loving me this spring before the pods appeared for planting them such delicious new greens, as they mowed the tops. Super interesting. Thanks for doing this episode! I'm going to share this with my niece who is a gardener and a foodie as well. Next year, I'll try this plant again. I did it last year, but had no idea what I was doing. It was my first year gardening.
U can soak the dried ones in water. Fry, boil, roast. Mix them together with diced onions, ginger, salt. Put some chat masala on it. Put a drizzle of mustard oil or lemon juice. Goes well with beer and whiskey. We call it Chakna.
I’ve grown them a few times. The green ones are super yummy. Even better than fresh peas, which I love.

In northern part of India we make curry of its green leaves when the plant is in its early age, which is also good for its growth. and you can also find its green plants in local markets during the season to have it raw straight from the plans. Love it
Looking forward to more “How dose it grow” episodes but the gardening episodes are great too.

Nicole you are just too great of a saleslady and please be right about.this. I did the no tilt like you and Charles Dowding love it for my tomato and peppers , also almost no poison spray but only dust the trunk of my zucchini squash, and it's working great. First season ever (70 old) I picked bush beans 3 times and almost no bug bites or poison Thank you for the teaching

I was once in Chicago and there is a Latin supermarket that was selling fresh green chickpeas, I bought about two pounds. They are absolutely delicious 😋 . The cool thing about it is that the pods that contain the chickpeas are full of air and when you press on them they make a popping sound the kids love it 😀.

Hey Nicole! Green chickpeas are the best thing ever! In India, we get it in winters and I make sure I eat it every single day till they last the season! I'm so happy that you discovered it there too. No one should miss out on the heavenly taste of fresh chickpeas! :) :D Also we sometimes roast the pods on a pan till lightly charred from the outside and with a bit of salt, they taste amazing that way too!

Soil will often have Rhizobia bacteria present already. Inoculating certainly gives a boost, making sure the plants have access to the bacteria immediately (and the right strain) but it doesn't mean that your plants won't be fixing nitrogen at all if you don't inoculate. Fixed nitrogen will not increase in the soil unless you terminate the crop prior to fruiting and incorporate into soil -- virtually all of the extra nitrogen is going into the seeds.

Thanks for the video Nicole, will definitely be giving chickpeas a go in my garden. It looks like you've replaced all your old wooden beds with metal ones. Will you be posting a video about this? My wooden beds are rotting and seem to be harbouring lots of insects, so am considering replacing them, and I'm keen to see how that went for you.
The seeds are actually called, "Desi Chana". The "Kabuli" variant is the big off white ones. I actually have been growing chickpeas in my home garden for a while for its leaves, but still I was watching you 🙈 You are so fun to watch.

I grow black chickpeas too! I also grow a traditional tan variety. I've found that the black ones aren't as productive as the tan but I love them both!
Wonderful Nicole! We get green chickpeas or Bengal Gram ( another variety) seasonally once or twice a year. We roast them while still on a bunch and used to sit in a circle open each pod and enjoy them. We also make a veg curry with potato 😁

I was actually interested in watching this video because I happen to be sprouting about 12 chickpeas right now. They have several layers of leaves on them and when I get a little bit more route, I will plant them into my raised garden. It’s awful hot here in Florida, so I don’t know if they will survive but we will see how they do.

I'm growing chickpeas for the first time and they are growing really good. Didn't know about eating them fresh like that. I was growing them for dry. But now I'm going to harvest for fresh eating. They are a very fluffy type plant.

Wow! I have great memories growing up in Jordan; roasting the green chickpeas over open fire. So so good. On a side note i was so excited when I saw them at the Mexican store... Truly yummy.

Hello from India!!!! You can eat the soft leaves of chickpea plants too. It's curry in pulses tastes very good. They are little sour.

@EdwardTu79 The Mixed Content Creator No not really. It's sour to taste. You can actually see the recipe 'chane ka saag' if you wanna try. But only soft topmost leaves are edible. Not the mature one.

You can eat lots of beans at various stages. If you've accidentally let your green beans go too long, but they're not dry yet, try removing them from the pods and adding them to soups, the results are much smoother and creamier than beans that have been cooked from dry. Pea and bean shoots are great in salads and sandwiches. Just pick the fresh new growth from the top of the stem to the next leaf node down and eat stem and all. You only pick the tops because the further down you go, the tougher and more fibrous the stem gets. It's basically a more mature version of bean sprouts. If you're growing peas or beans for shoots, you can grow them much closer together too.

In Bangladesh we generally eat the black chickpeas. These have more concentrated flavor than garbanzo kind of chickpeas. Garbanzo is larger in size, most interestingly we call them “kabli/kabuli” kind of chickpeas! Sometimes I even feel like the black ones have a little more harder texture than the lighter one, but I am not 100% sure. Thanks for the video, I have never tried (or seen) green chickpeas! And I have never imagined chickpeas will grow in my area (zone 7b).. I’ll definitely try next year! 😍

The moment I saw you put that fresh chickpea on that farm, I knew you wouldn't be able to forget it. And here you are, raising your own chickpea. People actually sell fresh chickpeas in Central Turkey at neighbourhood bazaars and I loved them. It's been so long since I've last seen fresh chickpeas. ☹

We are growing these for the first time this year! We want to maximize our harvest in any way, but were looking to keep a stash of dried chickpeas on hand. Do you know if we can pick them green and then dry them inside? Or would we need to just let them dry on the plant?
You can still eat the young shoots of a mature plant that has seeds. It tastes great
Try pan roasting them to almost a semi steam where some of the outer pods blacken out a little. Pour salt on the outside and eat them like sunflowers.

I eat sprouts of chickpeas, with some chopped cucumbers, chopped carrots, chopped tomatoes, , some coriander leaves, adding lemon juice and adding a lil bit rock salt! Here in India, we really eat a lot of chickpeas, which is full protein, vitamins and minerals. There are many ways to eat them, you can roast them and take as snack with herbal tea! AMAZING VIDEO!👍

Yeah green chickpeas are heavenly, especially if you light roast them with the pods on. That's how we eat it in India. The end result is a warm, soft, even sweeter chickpea its just heavenly! Some people use a bit of black-salt afterwards, but you can eat them anyway you want -- plain, salted, seasoned, mix-in-salads! Thanks Nicole!

Hey Nicole!!!!! If you liked green chickpeas then you should really try out green wheat. It's far more sweeter and tastier. I'm sure you'll love that too. Even those are eaten and sold in the states of Maharashtra and Gujarat in India.

@@TrueFoodTV We cut the kernel along with stem when the spikes/head of kernel start turning golden but aren't completely dry. Roast the whole kernel over fire and then separate the husk by rubbing with hands. It could be eaten as it is/ make salad / just add a little sugar and sev (snack made of gram flour) and serve. Even sorghum is consumed this way and also as fritters. Also try boiled groundnuts. When the groundnuts are harvested we just take a batch of it (straight from filed without drying it), clean the pods and boil the whole pods with a little turmeric and salt. After it has cooled down we just eat it right away.
In Mexico they're called garbanzos. Fondest memories as a kid was to run to the corner at night to get a big fresh bag of these, sauteed in lemon and salt🤤🤤
