    For garbanzos, which apparently have cleistogamous flowers (meaning they are autogamous/self-fertile because most fertilization occurs before the flowers open), I'd have to say the earthworm is their best friend. However, we need both, & both have their place. Red wrigglers (Eisenia fetida), though, are generally considered more of a surface worm, rather than deep burrowers, like our native earthworms are, so they do better where they can't freeze.

    Thanks for sharing....I didnt realize this fact about Red wrigglers, they have survived well so far...may be I should add some other worms too. I will consider that.

    Great stuff! Very practical, thank you. Tower garden is excellent, especially the center section for composting. The worms are also a great idea. To get brown, dried legumes, do you leave them on the bush or do you cut them and then leave them to dry? I read that one should leave it on the bush and pull the bush out, put it somewhere warm to dry. Not really what I want to do. On your last question: I would trim some of the plants down and I would leave some of the plants for nature to take care of and record the difference, so you get two outcomes instead of one. I planted garbanzo beans, but they rotted in the soil, hence my looking for info. Thanks so much and keep up the good work 😃👏

  • @ournandanavanam

    @ournandanavanam

    Thank you. I am glad you liked the content. As far as your question, you can leave it on the bush if there is no bunnies or squirrels around. If not Its better to let the fully grow and then let them dry out on a rack somewhere like you would let Garlic cure. Chickpeas/ Garbanzo beans rotting in soil is very common, the best way to prevent that is to ensure constant moisture in the first week of planting them. Good luck :)

    Great video. can you please see if I understood your chart correctly (for Seattle weather): 1- Start in March to get greens and later in the season they will produce chickpeas 2- If one does not need the greens, they can start them in May and they will get chickpeas sometimes in August. 3- Start in Sep if one wants the greens only (there will not be enough time to get chickpeas before frost comes). Also o need to start indoors, I can directly start outside.

  • @ournandanavanam

    @ournandanavanam

    2 ай бұрын

    Yes you can start as early as March or as late as Sep if all you are looking for is greens. An accidental discovery for me was that I could actually grow chickpeas at home lol. And if you are interested in Chickpeas too then give the plants a longer time to grow irrespective of when you plant them originally.

    You goahead and plant them right now and depending on 1. How many bees you attract and 2. How much sun your plants receive you can expect to harvest the Chickpea pods in Late Aug or Mid Sep. All the very best, do share your success with us :)

    I usually do not soak or sprout any legume seeds if I am going to direct sowing. And suceeds : usually 90% or more of the seeds sprout, but while they getting bigger and stronger not all of them make it... growing organic means to share with other living creatures (including caterpillars, aphids, even fungical issuaes) ... thankfully in my garden there are no bunnies, neither any kind of rodent but a ton of cats 😆 The way you harvest seems to be slower than cutting a stem and after that taking all pods out. Have you tried that? Thanks for your video. Hope you will be able to share some recipes , specially the ones that involves garbanzo greens, and the seeds that are not mature too...
