Groudle Glen Railway (July 2016)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The 120 year old Groudle Glen Railway, running on 2ft gauge track, was in operation once again during the 2016 Manx Transport Festival week in July 2016; running an unusual daytime operation on Wednesday 27th (as opposed to it's regular Summer evening timetable of 7pm to 9pm), and another daytime service on Saturday 30th.
Keeping company with the railway's resident Bagnall 2-4-0 tank Sea Lion, was a former resident and old friend. Fellow Bagnall tank Polar Bear was making a short visit to it's former home, from her regular base at the Amberley Industrial Museum in Sussex. (As well as the steam powered Polar Bear, there is also a brief cameo from her battery-powered replacement.) Polar Bear is not likely to return to the island again for some time to come, hence the 'Brown Bear' locomotive being built as it's replacement. For more info, visit www.ggr.org.uk
The following footage shows the two locos in action between Lhen Coan and Sea Lion Rocks, with Lime Kiln Halt and Head Land Loop being featured as well.

Great video, that's me at 10 mins waving Sea Lion off at the rocks. I am a friend of the Groudle and contribute every month towards the building of Brown Bear. Worth every penny, love this railway.

I well remember Polar Bezr when she was in pieces at Brockham Chalk pits near dorling surrey back in the early 70s. Her steam dome and chimney adorned the fire place of my front room for an entire winter, as I sat with (very) large can of Brasso, polishing them to a mirror finish. But a new wife soon put paid to that. One point though. Who in gods name thought up that hideous livery? When Brockham collected her from GGR she was in her original green livery. Informative comments welcomed please? Paul L Lee Twickenham, West London.)

Good story regarding the dome and chimney; pity your new missus didn't seem to approve... :P

David Hennessy. Well, she got what she deserved......a divorce. Nobody, but nobody, comes between me and my steam locos. But then I went and got married again 15 years ago. I wonder how long she will last?

That was the 'Steamplex'; a combination of a former Simplex diesel chassis and a vertical steam boiler. The loco has since left the railway for a new life elsewhere, but for the short time it was based at the Groudle Glen, it made quite a novelty to the steam fleet.
