Groudle Glen Railway (July 2013)

On the afternoon of Saturday 27th July 2013, during the Manx Transport Festival, a visit to the 2ft gauge Groudle Glen Railway (alias 'the line that goes uphill to the sea') was made.
The plucky veteran Bagnall 2-4-0 tank loco Sea Lion was turned out as usual, along with her rake of four wheeled Victorian passenger stock. The journey, from Lhen Coan in the glen to Sea Lion Rocks on the cliff tops, was blessed with gloriously sunny weather.
Another attraction on this day was the operation of the railway's latest addition to the steam fleet; the eccentric, yet inimitable 'Steamplex'. This bizarre machine (privately owned by a volunteer on the railway, built by the Alan Keef works in Ross-on-Wye and delivered in early 2013) is a vertical steam boiler mounted on the frames of a former Simplex diesel loco, hence the name. A single cylinder engine powers the frames via a drive shaft. The loco, hauling a single coach, shared passenger duties with Sea Lion on this day.
Back at Lhen Coan, another Alan Keef masterpiece was on display; the 2004-built replica battery powered loco Polar Bear was drawn out of the shed for photography.
A grand way to spend a Saturday afternoon!

That takes me back many years to the day when my parents and I discovered a steam train running in Groudle Glen. As a child I loved my IOM holidays. Thanks for sharing this.
Great video showing both trains in action, good to meet you again.
Fantastic I remember wandering along that line a few times before it was restored.

Thank you. A short, but quaint little railway to say the least!
Great video, thanks for posting it!
If anyone is wondering what it is at 11:20, it is the remains of the zoo, which kept polar bears,
I just bought that simplex sm32 gauge model which was on ebay 3 days ago..didnt reaslise till i googled the name the seller had it was a actual loco..
I'm an occasional volunteer on the GGR though I wasn't there that day - great to see such a good video of the line - and you had a beautiful day for it.

Thanks capitalrail. Been fortunate to get to the GGR for the last few days, and have been really lucky with the weather too!
What is the name of the small green loco that looks like a coffee urn on wheels? :-)

It's called the 'Steamplex'; a combination of a vertical steam boiler, and the chassis of a Simplex diesel loco.
