@SMack I hunt moose and deer, mostly. I have hunted black bear, caribou and pronghorn antelope. Every year I shoot about a dozen or so grouse. I have taken the meat from each and every one. I have also had mounts made. The pronghorn in particular has magnificent horns. But that's not why I shot it. The horns were simply a bonus. Before taking the shot, all I knew was that it was a mature male. I suppose I could always leave the entire head to rot but if the hunt was particularly memorable for any one of a number of reasons, I will cape out the head and take the antlers/horns. None of my mounted specimens is anywhere near a record book trophy. Except for the pronghorn, they are quite average. Yet they represent something to me that I want to keep. Every time I look at them, memories come back. Usually, the memory has nothing to do with the actually shooting. It might just be sitting around the campfire, telling partially true stories. It might be eating fried potato and venison back at base camp when you are so hungry you were about to eat your boots. "Grub in the guts." As one hunting buddy's brother said during a moose hunt when sitting around the campfire drinking a wee dram, "Millionaires can't buy what we have right here." You either get it or you don't.

I was in the military and served 30 years. John and Billy displayed what we in the military understand. Both were there for each other. You do it not just because it’s your job, but you do it because of the people you serve with. John said right after they put the bear down there aren’t many people he would do that with. Showed he respected and trusted Billy.

John story is a fantastic thing to hear, your dad is watching and he is proud of you and what you’ve made of yourself. Thanks MDMM, for another great adventure in gods country. After watching the video, it’s a good story all around. I’m glad nobody was hurt or chewed up on this one. I’ve seen how dangerous a black bear can be, can only imagine one of these big brown boys. What a great hunt for father and daughter to remember their whole life. Wishing you and yours the best from me and mine. God bless 👍🇺🇸🎥🥇🥇🥇🙏🏻

Glad to see you came out of this unscathed. To watch two men with so much experience in a situation like this is humbling. Billy, what better guy to have at your side in this situation than John. You both have my utmost respect and I pray you are both always safe in your profession. Thanks for sharing this.

This was a fabulous documentary!! I loved the lessons in respectful hunting, family values and spiritual meaning. Growing up in Alaska, I came from a hunting family. I’ve forwarded this video to my father who’s going to enjoy as well. Wish ... I could bring John some sunblock... lol!

Billy, I hope you read this comment. Thank you for introducing us all to John. John’s story hits home on different levels and I think we are all blessed that he shared this with us. However, his comment that nobody would miss him ( I do realize what he was actually meaning because I have a daughter myself) really hit kind of hard. Please tell John his bravery and solidarity with you is commendable and inspiring. But most of all, he would absolutely be missed by more people than he’ll ever know. I believe he was put here intentionally by God to be a guardian for many daddy’s, uncles, brothers, sisters and moms that have loved ones back home praying for them to return safely. Please tell John that.

Oh yeah, it doesn't get any more dangerous than tracking a wounded bear in thick cover. They are very smart animals, they will set up an ambush to get you. Some scientists think bears intelligence is on par with primates. Terrifyingly intelligent animals. Kudos to these guys 👍💯
