I remember a lot of people at the time criticising Messi's performances because he never scored and expected him to replicate his Barcelona form. But I still felt that he was Argentina's most dangerous player a lot of the time and his runs and passes led to goals.

After watching all these highlights, I have concluded that the prevailing notion at the time (that Messi played poorly in this tournament) was completely wrong. He was involved in several of his teammates’ goals, and but for a few bad breaks, he’d have had some goals of his own. At the end of the day, he was a kid who led a team that didn’t really have a manager (let’s face it, Maradona was more like a cheerleader with a clipboard) to a quarter final appearance. That’s a lot of pressure to put on one player, and it’s a credit to his on the field leadership that they went as far as they did.

Tbf, if there was any time to be mismanaged it was this tournament here: those Spain and Germany teams at the time were ridiculous and likely would have overpowered these guys even if they were being managed correctly. Definitely worth it in the long run as the next guy who came in played to Messi's strengths more and sorted out the defence which led onto 2014 and everything that came after.

All of you that are saying Messi played terrible but got Man of the match is stupid. He played a great game. Only thing missing was the goal. One was a great save by the goalie, the other one hit the side bar. He created chances for this teammates. the second goal was a reflection of his shot on goal. All the messi haters..you all make me sick. smh

He was a very unstable GK playing for my team panathinaikos he met messi again after 3 months were we lost 5-1 to Barcelona after that season he left for parma and then he played for 2nd division teams he was already 30 back in these days

Someone hasn't watched his performance vs Nigeria. Where the keeper made about 5 great saves. That was his best WC performance even without goals. Followed by 2014.

His dribbling at that time was out of this world. Now due to his age it's not his best skill but he has mastered free kicks and visionary passes.

Maybe it was a pleasure if you weren't Argentinian. He totally blew that WC for us with his poor coaching, strategy, and players choices for the squad.

if we're talking about this year, then yes. Messi deserves the FIFA World Player of the Year. in 2010 he didn't have very much success outside of La Liga, but this year he has 91 goals in all competitions to his name, beating a record held by the great Gerd Muller for decades, and has been very successful for Argentina as well. Xavi and Iniesta are midfield maestros but Messi is a phenomenal goal scorer and one of the greatest of all time.
