As someone who has no ocean experience, what should they have done differently? (Not a challenge, just genuinely curious). It is obvious some go too fast, and many are not wearing life jackets, but it looked like going slow didn't always work either.
@nightrider5420
Жыл бұрын
@@jhobaugh45 You were completely correct in stating that some go too fast and some go too slow. The trick is to find the right speed so that you don’t drop the nose or porpoise the front of your boat especially if it’s an open front boat like you see so many of. With an open front one or two waves can sink your boat that’s why the people in the front of the boat should really be in the back of the boat helping to keep the nose up. It honestly takes a little time on the water to figure these things out but a boaters course never hurts and should be mandatory in my eyes.
@louisglen1653
Жыл бұрын
@@jhobaugh45 Well to be honest I see very few people adjusting their throttles when encountering a large wave. I'm no expert, but I have been in rough water and would vary the speed of the engine when encountering large waves. I also don't think it is good for the engines to be at a constant throttle when encountering large waves, because the engines will rev very high when the props leave the water, then all of a sudden a whole lot of pressure is put back onto the engines as the propellers go back into the water. But that is just me and how I would do it. Everyone is different.
It appears that when going at a faster speed the boats usually do better
incoming tide with wind is brutal. So many of those captains could improve with better throttle and trim control. Some of those conditions are too challenging for many of the vessels.

Usually you slow down. If the waves aren’t high enough to roll your boat you can approach the waves at a 45 degree angle instead of 90 degree. That approach effectively elongates the wave so boat has a chance to rise up and down without the bow punching into a face our trough

I must have missed the FAILS on this video ! Your idea of fails and my idea of fails are totally different!
If you see “white caps” beyond Haulover that would indicate small craft warnings, and all of these boats are considered small craft, don’t go out. I spent many years with my father on Long Island sound and the Atlantic, only went through a rip tide once out at Montauk, 15 foot seas that slammed my father’s 42 foot boat and sent all of our stored items out on the deck. The tide was a black line across the sky. Scared the hell out of us. My father was a good sailor as was the rest of our family. Never seen waves like that, short period very high. I was in the Coast Guard and have been in some storms with 40 foot seas. These people are nuts to go out in rough seas.
@tomdavis3038
Жыл бұрын
I don’t know about Montauk but most inlets are very rough during a running tide no matter what the sea state. Also typically once past the inlet entrance the open water has much longer period waves and obviously a much better ride. I personally do not like open bow boats but to each their own Cheers
