    MJW's emphasising becoming a better person through hard training... sure, but you think you're training harder and with more commitment than the guy who's actually going to step into a cage in front of 1000's of people and potentially get badly beaten up? MMA may be a sport, but is more of a test than 99% of martial arts practitioners will undertake on their path to 'martial enlightenment and character development' via training for nothing. Training for its own sake still has value, but let's not kid ourselves and try to elevate above those who put it to the test.

  • @fo4357

    @fo4357

    3 жыл бұрын

    I think what he was getting at was the approach to hard training, not saying the training is harder. Wanting to be the toughest fighter you can be by testing yourself in MMA is probably the best way to do so, however, it does not mean you have improved any other aspect of your life. Look at Jon Jones, one of the greatest MMA fighters of all time, but would you want to be him? My old Capoeira master fought in Vale Tudo in Brazil in the 1990s when it truly was anything goes. He told me that most of the guys who did it would go out and try to get in fights with random people in nightclubs so they could beat them up. My old BJJ instructor (an MMA fighter) also encouraged us to react with extreme violence if we were in any altercation in real life, and didn't see anything wrong with picking fights with people. Lots of hard training, no character development. On the other hand, if you use your training (whether in traditional martial arts or in combat sports like MMA) to explore your own mind and emotions and how they react to pain, exhaustion and adversity, it can be useful for all aspects of your life. I think MJW and the masters in the video are disappointed that this emphasis has been eroded a lot in martial arts training in general, because people are focused on being the best in relation to others, rather than the best they can be in relation to their own potential.

    @@fo4357 That's all fair, but I would draw my conclusions from the majority rather than a few individuals who may be exceptions. That being said, I think you're going to attract certain types of people to MMA vs TMA, so this would affect what you see coming out of the gyms and dojos. I've certainly encountered plenty of highly trained TMA practitioners who are deluded about their abilities &/or are not really chill because they haven't had anything like a real fight, so their 'martial enlightenment' is not solidly underpinned with the confidence that comes with experience. Some of what you wrote about used to happen with traditional karate in the early days too... basically go down the street and get in a fight as part of your black belt test!

    I'd say most these guys would have given Jai a run for his money. Jai ripped Van damme for being an actor and that's all then said he's an actor that can fight.... Yet has no proof of it 🤔 Van damme fought in competition like Jai did

    White would have had 25 kg or 50 pounds on Bruce Lee he would kill Bruce Lee is he hit him it's that simple. It would be like Manny Pacquaio getting in the ring with Mike Tyson or Mayweather JR getting in the ring with George Foreman or Ali in their prime White they would get swatted like flies. White has trained and sparred with some of the best MMA and UFC fighters in the world and he is also a former student of Bill Wallace yes he is a little arrogant but even at 51, I would dare anyone of this forum to get in the ring and go full contact with him.

    Unless you're practising your martial art because you need to use it martially (in war) then MMA fighters are actually coming closer to the character development that comes with that kind of training and testing.

    For those who believe that Bruce Lee was just an actor cuz he hadn't fights in competitions... MJW he would kill you if he was alive. I guarantee... Doesn't matter if he s not envolved at tournament or belts he would destroy everyone at every weight and every class for the 3 reasons and may more I will tell now One, Bruce Lee was too fast and had tremendous power despite his lil size. He could probably knock you out with one hit or two. Two, Bruce was very intelligent and way ahead of his time. He discovered alot of things that were uncommon in his time. He knew where to hit, where to position his body, how to hit, how to move, where to move, etc. For example, he’d drop his lead hand slightly only to explosively jab you where you’re not looking. Most fighters aren’t smart. They’re just gutsy. They slug attacks until one lands. There’s little to no strategy in the martial arts world. Three, Bruce was very adaptable. He questioned most martial arts. He got rid of flashy techniques and rigid styles. He developed his own unique evolving art. He took the techniques that worked for him and modified them. He took principles of different arts, simplified, and applied them. He was constantly experimenting and improving. He didn’t fight for sport. He fought in a no rules environment. Most martial artists don’t question their systems. They just take a set style like kickboxing or Wing Chun, assume it works, and leave it at that. They don’t like to think or step out of their comfort zones. They’re not as creative and as versatile as Bruce. That’s why Bruce is so talented. He didn’t care how big you were, how strong you were, how tough you were, etc. He had the knowledge of scientific street-fighting and that’s what made him such a rare individual. I’ve yet to see one fighter who could match Bruce Lee.
