@@muZlimBoy They didn't get it from medieval heretic hunters, and witch burners that's for damn sure. The bible is no place for ethics or objective morality. An objective morality would be valid for every person regardless of their cultural heritage, political attachment, or faith. Not only is biblical morality unable to offer objectivity, it cannot increase moral responsibility. A religious person must simply submit to whatever rules your God hands down. Believers naturally defend the bible by picking out just the “good” parts. But you could just as well pick out the “good” parts of any large body of literature, from sacred texts to secular novels. Picking through Shakespeare would serve just as well. Atheists can do this selecting from the world’s cultural resources too, and there is no evidence that atheists must be less moral than believers just because they think first. So don't point to the bible and claim morality. Read it instead and weep.

Of course, in the era of ego, nobody thinks they're going there, while the shitstorm we're in clearly indicate most of us would. Although, now I'm free from this damaging belief and can think more clearly, I must say: in the end, I think any eternal existence would be eternal damnation. I am not in a different religious because I believe that the religions I am in is the best of the ones I"ve investigated. It also is accepting of whatever is good in those other religions, so I can adopt practices from those religions as well. All religions are different, but most popular ones agree on many things, not surprisingly. Truth is truth, and a deeper truth is a deeper truth. My own experience is that everyone has a religion, especially atheists. Did you know that in the famed Madelyn Murray O'Hair case, that eliminated faculty-led prayer from the public schools, the atheists bringing the suit insisted that atheism was a religion. Ironically Madelyn was murdered by other atheists, and her son, the subject of the suit, became a Christian in adulthood! So we can ask the same question of you, if you have chosen atheism as your religion, why aren't you in a different religion?

@@joemarshall4226 The whole premise of your argument is false. Atheism has no pope, no tenets, dogmas, or rituals - it is simply non-belief in a deity. Atheism has nothing to do with any social or political beliefs - you can find an atheist on any side of any issue. Religion involves some type of communal practice, or organized worship services, where certain ideas must be accepted (except your religion, where apparently anything goes), and your monetary contributions are expected. Atheism is simply not believing in a God or gods because no god claim has ever met it's burden of proof, at least in the mind of the atheist. To call that a religion is pure sophistry.

@@jimd6641 Well, atheism IS a religion, because atheists insisted it was, and the Supreme Court ruled that it was. And you are doing the same hedging that modern atheists do all the time. You are saying that atheism is just non-belief in a deity. Non-belief due to lack of evidence is agnosticism. Atheism is defined as the BELIEF that there is no God. The way you describe it, your belief could change with better evidence. But many world religions have no god. Confucianism, Taoism, and Shinto among them. Your definition of my religious belief is wrong. Communal practices and organized worship practices are not a must for something to be a religion, Neither is the giving of contributions. And many non-religious groups require contributions....dues, for clubs, etc. I never said anything goes. I said most religions agree on many things, so I can identify with whatever is good about another religion. For instance, the Abrahamic religions all agree that Charity to the less fortunate is good. Buddhism agrees with Christianity about care for the environment. Atheism has not Pope. Well all but one religions has no Pope, so that is not a requirement for a religion, either. As an atheist, the more important question is, "What do YOU, personally, believe in, other than non-belief?"

Owen S If God is infinite then all possibilities exist in him/her/it, even the possibility of evil. We all are so ignorant and stupid: does that also mean that there is no God, because God is presumably all knowing? God is omnipotent because ultimately ignorance and evil are overcome. God is omnipotent because ignorance evolves to infinite knowledge, darkness to light. The lower terms end for the higher to be! If God was only capable of creating whitewashed, purely good creatures that would be a limitation right? And also would it not be boring? Where is the adventure then, the play, the contrasts, the victory of Good over evil?

@@UHEBallOfSomethingRight, as an atheist myself I think it’s pretty easy to also see the problem with this. I don’t think anyone is dumb enough that they think they can fool an all knowing god, if you’re helping someone for credit to god then god would probably not see that as a good thing. I think both christian’s and atheists are so insufferable sometimes, how will we ever come to an agreement if we won’t hear each other out. Only way to truly convert someone is to have an open mind, answer truthfully, listen, be ready to be proven wrong and we might actually get somewhere. I’m an atheist and my friend is a recently turned christian and we discuss religion a lot, we’ve never had a single argument that landed in a bad way because we respect each others beliefs. My aim isn’t to convert him to atheism it’s too convert myself, I want to be proven wrong and know for sure god exists but so far i’m not convinced. I just simply answer and question him about things that bother me and he gives me his own answers to those and it’s really healthy and he’ll remain my best friend no matter what. I’m sorry you have to put up with atheists who always try to put down christian’s, it’s just as annoying as christian’s who are ignorant. Atheist like to be so nonchalant like they’re such smartasses who knows so much and christian’s are dumb fairytale believers when in reality neither is true. @@kimbo99 I think your claim that atheists have religious tendencies is, quite frankly, very silly. Most atheists (I'll go out on a limb here...) are people who have considered the claims of religion, and have decided they are without merit. Exploration of ideas does not suggest belief in those ideas. Art sometimes reflects this, but gets claimed as "religious". You are, of course, entitled to your interpretation. I think the quote from Kubrick speaks for itself, and certainly does not suggest belief in religion - quite the opposite in fact. One can readily look up the interview containing this quote for further context... There is also a lot of debate (understatement!) about the meaning of 2001 (as well as most Kubrick works).

They are being led. The one surviving astronaut Bowman ends up ageing rapidly in a palace and dying and then being reborn as a foetus. At the end. In the book HAL is asked to relay a message from the creator residing on moon Europa. That man, can explore the solar system, but not Europa. its deeply religiously themed. Its about man meeting his creator. Some people call it awakening. It was in the Roddenberry's first Star Trek movie also. Meeting the creator of VEGA. Stalin trained to be a priest, and what power-crazed dictator wouldn't eagerly seize on the control over the peasants offered by a thousand years of subservience to the priesthood. Hitler was a Catholic who followed the road map provided by renegade Catholic priest Martin Luther when carrying out persecution and extermination of millions of Jews for the "crime" of being Jews. Most of those who died under Mao's rule died because Mao was a city boy who understood nothing of agriculture, or of basic economics. The war on sparrows led to insect eating birds being killed and a massive increase in the insect population causing failure of the wind pollenated grain harvest which was eaten by insects, leading to famine. That famine was exacerbated by attempting to build a massive steel industry from nothing in too short a time, pulling farm workers from the fields to work in foundries. So your best examples of "Atheist genocides" are a failed priest using the obedience instilled by the church, a Christian carrying out the plan set out by another Christian, and an idiot with good intentions.

I left religion - not because "religion hurt me", or "the church hurt me" or whatever stereotype - but because I began to read and learn about science, world history, philosophy, etc. And no, I didn't just blindly accept the contrary argument, I investigated them and compared their reasoning. Very little about religion makes sense - and there is every reason to believe it is a tool by bronze age leaders to keep society under control. There was (and maybe still is) a utility in that. But don't delude yourself into thinking that utility equates an intrinsic reality. I have strong convictions about ethics - I have developed that with reason, not with belief. Unless someone's neurology is significantly impaired, there is a human aspect to us that senses ethical codes of conduct towards each other and ourselves. You can call it conscience if you want, but I call it empathy and respect of persons. I feel like I am a happier, more forgiving, more empathetic, more sincere person than I was back then.

And attended lots of pray service to reaffirm his faith. A vast majority of religious people are not open to outside criticism of their religion. A vast majority of ultra religious people either grew up in a strict religious household or are trying to atone for something they did in the past (even if it was not wrong at the time) or use it as a crutch to either keep themselves from doing something they used to do that was destructive to themselves or others or show to others that they are better people now (drugs or crime). Most people become religious at the very worst times of their lives (no atheists in a foxhole theory). Few convert when life is going great, though when the bad times end, they will claim it was a reward from their religion and they stay religious on the fear that if they leave their religion the bad times will return.

If you love yourself repent of your sins (lying, hatred, unforgiveness, sexual sins, taking the Lord’s Name in vain, stealing, dishonouring your parents etc) & believe in Jesus for forgiveness of sins. (Jesus died on the Cross as a sacrifice and defeated death by rising from the dead)

That quote has nothing to do with refusing to grant humans any credit for thinking for themselves. If that's what you get from the quote you're infinitely missing the quote. It is pointing out that there is no basis for human ethics or morality if there is no ethical and moral reality above humanity. If there is no moral order in the universe morality is as pointless as it is meaningless.

I am a proud Atheist. I can love people, hate people, help people, hurt people, just as well (and sometimes better) as those who think a celestial morality will punish. This does not mean some the teachings of religion can do good things as well. It just has so much more potential to do ill.

@@rogerregard6505 Your snide question holds more wisdom than you may think. Men were made by evolution. They evolved from the apelike Neanderthal, from the even more apelike Homo Habilius, and even more apelike than that the Australopithecus. Before that was apes, which came from lemurs or similar large mammals that do not or probably don't exist anymore. Before that were the primitive mammals first seen millions of years ago, which came from some other mammal-like creature. But at the start of it all, we were all just protobacteria, which is more or less a nerdy term for ancient germs. This small creature was only possible because of the Earth going through multitudes of traumas like being hit by meteors and of the like. This happened over 2 billion years ago, about 11 billion years after the initial birth of the universe, or at least what is estimated to have been.

@@ShwappaJ Then where's all the half monkeys and half humans. By your "theory" monkeys shouldn't exist anymore. Stop believing government funded "Scientists" and "teachers". Be honest you don't KNOW anything for sure. Instead You Believe You know because You are invested in that knowledge. The antithesis of thought and probabilities means you're almost certainly wrong. In fact you are more likely to win the lottery everyday for the rest of your life than the possibility that you could be right by doing literally no research or thought I'd your own! You think believing in a big bang created by nothing. That sounds more insane than believing in a creator. Something had to create the conditions for the big bang. Nothing can't create everything. The theory of evolution is only a theory to figure out how many citizens will believe such craziness just because someone of authority told them so. I'll Believe what the majority of all humans who've ever lived believe over a theory anyday. "Scientists" used to say the earth was flat too.

Ronnie D yawn, same tired thing apologists have said for decades in defense of their obvious mythical beliefs. Thousands of gods and religions, but you picked the right one and the billions that have lived and died before you and never heard the word of sweet jesus can go straight to hell. As if humans are the only intelligent life in earth, you realize pigs and whales have the exact same DNA as we do, and they exhibit behavior that shows an awareness of family and even ethical “moral” behavior. But right we’re the ones made in God’s perfect image animals are all going to hell too, and so are microorganisms. You know those creatures your almighty god didn’t give us domain over, as has been evidenced in epidemics and pathogens like the Black Plague that was not delivered by a vengeful god to condemn their wickedness, as the clergy doubtlessly preached at the time, but because of sewage getting into the drinking water. Did rationality come from nature? Yes! We came from nature and we invented rationality, it’s all man made, like the language you and I are speaking in is man made, like the Koran and Book of Mormon and the Bible were all man made, It actually makes a lot of sense if you stop buying the same fairytale magical horseshit you’ve been spoon-fed since infancy.
