GRE Mastery Pt.1 - 3 Key Elements of GRE Success + Learn to Dominate GRE Motion Problems

What does it take to beat the GRE? This content-packed video lays out a "Success Triad" framework for dominating the GRE and covers the content, strategies, and study plan you need to dramatically boost your GRE quantitative and GRE verbal scores.
This video also pulls back the curtain on GRE motion (distance/rate) problems, one of the common GRE word problems that tends to give students the most fits. It attacks them from several different angles, with examples, and not only teaches you the "how-to's" of solving them but also gives you two key strategies for getting right answers more quickly and accurately on test day.
This is the first video in a free four-part series on GRE Mastery. To subscribe to the full series, opt-in at the top of our homepage at www.dominatethegre.com/.

    I was looking for information related to the GRE components and how do they score each section. Fortunately I have found your site and it is wonderful how you help students that are struggling to prepare and present this test. I've already scheduled to take the GRE the next month from now and I'm doing some self research and I reached this information thanks to heaven. God bless you Brett.

    Oh my God, Brett thank you so much for this video. I had given up on sitting for the GRE because I thought the math questions were too technical and verbal was beyond my ability when i tried practising them on my own, I have the Kaplan prep plus 2018 workbooks. But watching this video gives me fresh insight and I think I can do this. I am aiming for a 160 in both because I really want to do that graduate program I am aiming for. Great Lecture and you have a natural way of explaining the content to make it easy to understand. Thank you for showing the shortcuts. My question to you is... If one starts running out of time and you are not going to finish all the questions, I am assuming it is best to guess and just fill in the answers... does one answer choice (A, B, C, D) come up more often the another and is it better to guess all the same letter in hopes of getting a few more right.

  • @DominatetheGRE

    @DominatetheGRE

    6 жыл бұрын

    Yes, it's best to guess if you're running out of time since there's no penalty for wrong answers. In terms of guessing, one answer choice isn't necessarily right more than others. However, there are definitely some guessing strategies that I cover in my course. They're question-type specific, however, so it's too much to go into here. I'm not saying that to be coy, it's just the way it is. As a general rule, though, you can almost always eliminate a few "eye catcher" wrong answer choices if you just use a little logic and common sense, and that will improve your guessing odds for sure!

    Good question. My comprehensive course is designed around a 7-week syllabus, and that assumes 6-10 hours of study time per week (watching my instructional videos, working practice problems, studying vocab, taking practice tests, etc.). But since everything is available on-demand, you can move through it more quickly or slowly as your schedule demands. I have students who cram my course in just a week or two, and others who stretch it out for months. If you have at least some time in your schedule now, I'd say get started with it. But waiting for summer is fine, too. Feel free to e-mail me at brett@dominatethegre.com if you'd like to discuss further. I'm looking forward to working with you!

    There are a few things that worried me about taking the GRE. First, the vocabulary part scares me the most. English is my second language, so my vocabulary is not as strong as i would like it to be (reading and writing). Second, I get super nervous when it comes to taking tests in general. I get super nervous and I tend to second guess myself, etc. Also, I haven't taken Math in a long time so this video was a great refresher for me:). Thank you so much for sharing some tips, this video really helped a lot.

  • @DominatetheGRE

    Thanks for the feedback. The good news is that a lot of what you're talking about is within your control. You can definitely add to your vocabulary between now and test day and learn (or relearn) all of the math tested on the GRE. As for overcoming your test anxiety, a lot of it goes to your mindset, your preparation, and your confidence. One of the main things I hear from students who go through my full course is that they have more confidence and thus aren't as nervous on test day. Anyway, good luck and let me know how else I can help!

    I know this video is a few months old, but to answer your question...my biggest challenge when studying for the GRE is determining exactly what to study. Especially when it comes to verbal. Do I just study a bunch of random vocabulary words? And what strategies am I supposed to use to remember them all? Word problems are also a headache for me, but this video helped a lot. Thanks for sharing!

  • @DominatetheGRE

    @DominatetheGRE

    7 жыл бұрын

    Glad the video helped! As for verbal, "yes," the more vocabulary words you can memorize between now and test day, the better. There's a free website called freerice.com that's a fun way to practice. But obviously you're still likely to encounter some words on test day, especially on harder sentences, that you've either never seen before or don't remember the exact definition for. That's where strategy comes in. There are some great ways to get right answers even if you don't know what some of the words mean, which I teach in my GRE verbal course: www.dominatethegre.com/gre-prep-courses-online/full-verbal-course/. And of course reading a ton between now and test day will help you with RC as well.

  • @35owls

    As a strategy, you can just subtract 50 from 58. The difference in their speed is the only thing that matters, the 50mph they’re BOTH traveling at can just be reduced to zero. The question can be simplified to car B standing still at 28 miles ahead, and car A travels at +8mph, so just divide 28 miles by 8mph.

  • @DominatetheGRE

    @DominatetheGRE

    7 жыл бұрын

    What a great place to be from! I love all of Colombia, but I have particularly fond memories of Cartagena. There's nothing quite like eating fresh fish and fried plantains right on the beach :-) In terms of studying for the GRE, to give you an idea my Full GRE Course is designed around a 7-week study plan that assumes roughly 6-10 hours per week. Most of my students try to study an hour or two each day after work and then have a longer study session on the weekend. When you factor in all of the instructional videos + practice problems + practice tests, it's quite a bit to get through. That said, I focus on the highest-yield content and strategies so it's very efficient. I would think you should be able to fully prepare for the GRE in 50-75 hours depending on how quickly you pick things up. Your 2-month timeframe is perfect.

  • @DominatetheGRE

    @DominatetheGRE

    3 жыл бұрын

    Great realizations. A lot of that will come with taking full-length practice tests, especially developing the "internal clock" piece. Rather than worrying about the time on a question-by-question basis, take them in blocks of 5 questions. Check the clock only after completing the next 5 questions to see whether you're on pace, behind pace, or ahead of pace. That way you can go longer stretches fully focused on the questions without thinking about the clock.

    I've been taking prerequisite classes for the graduate program I want to go to while also studying for the GRE but the majority of my time went to making sure I got As in some difficult classes (which I did). I'm now 2 weeks out from my test date and am concerned that I'm not test ready in spite of covering all the material once over a long time period. The deadline for my first choice program is also in 2 weeks... other programs have deadlines that are up to 2 months out giving me more time to prepare for the GRE. All of the programs are highly competitive and the GRE will be a big factor for me. Should I try to cram in the next 2 weeks to make my first deadline or would you recommend changing my test date to give myself more time? FYI, my prerequisite classes are all calculus based so I'm definitely more confident with quant than verbal which I haven't looked at since October.

  • @DominatetheGRE

    When is the last time you took a full-length computer-based GRE practice test? How did that go for you? A lot of progress can be made in just 2 weeks, certainly, but it partly depends on how far away you currently are from your target score. Also, while your calculus courses have almost certainly gotten your brain back thinking mathematically, realize that GRE math is a bit different -- not only isn't calculus tested on the GRE, but they also have "weird" question types like quantitative comparisons that force you to think about math differently. Those take a little bit of time to master. That's not to say you can't get ready in two weeks, but it'll take a concerted effort for sure. Feel free to send me an e-mail at brett@dominatethegre.com to discuss your situation further. And of course check out my comprehensive online GRE Quantitative Course that I think will really give you a fighting chance over the next two weeks, here: www.dominatethegre.com/gre-prep-courses-online/full-quantitative-course/.

    Hi! Thank you for your wonderful videos, they are very clear and useful, I really appreciate what you're putting out there. I like learning 3 ways to do the same question in a progressively easier way..it really made it so I grasped how to do it as well as the short cuts to solve the same problem. I love math and it's helping me to pick it back up easily. :-) My biggest concern about taking the GRE is that I have been out of school for over 15 years and am having to learn so much "foreign" content. Most challenging for me so far has been the vocabulary and reading comprehension(as a child I struggled with reading comprehension.) Also I'm striving for perfect! I have 4 solid months with a lot of time dedicated to just studying, is that enough time to ace starting from "scratch?"

    Thanks for the insight into your situation. It's common for people going back to grad school to have been out of school for a while, so fear not, you're not alone! Yes, 4 solid months is plenty of time to prepare for the GRE from scratch. To give you an idea, my full prep course is designed around a 7-week study plan, and that's sufficient for most people. So four months should be great for you. Good luck and let me know how else I can help!

    I am most concerned about the qualitative sections. I am a non-traditional student and have not practiced this math since high school and unfortunately, did not like it then. I only have 1 month until I take the GRE. I am willing to dedicate the time and energy to doing well on this test since the program I am going into is HIGHLY competitive but feel overwhelmed with the sheer mass of knowledge I need to obtain to do well. I viewed your video on finding my "why" and believe my "why" is great enough to keep me motivated.

    Dominate the GRE Okay so I have a concern. Will your program reteach me how to complete the actual problems or just the tricks to get through once I know it? I was looking through the official burgundy book and realized I don't know where to start or how to complete any of the problems. Should I see a math tutor as well? I have been out of school 20 years so it has been "erased" from my mind for a while now.

  • @DominatetheGRE

    @DominatetheGRE

    My program does it all. It teaches you the underlying content (the stuff you've forgotten after 20 years!), gives you strategies for getting right answers more efficiently, provides lots of application examples, and gives you worksheets and other resources for practicing everything you learn. You shouldn't need an outside tutor -- my course is your tutor! And if you go with the Platinum Package, you'll get live online tutoring from me as well. But most of my students find the video course comprehensive and sufficient for learning everything and getting the score they need.

    An easy place to start on the verbal side is by memorizing a bunch of "hard" vocabulary words, though there are also cool strategies you can learn to help you get right answers even if you don't know what certain words mean. As for the quant part, speed comes from pattern recognition, repetition, and the non-standard strategies that help you get right answers in less time. Check out the rest of my videos on this channel, but it sounds like you would benefit from a more comprehensive prep course that covers everything you're asking about. But still getting destroyed in math 137 to 141.... Basically I think I understand it but turns out its wrong, its usually an arithmetic/algebra mistake, or if its probability or lists I have no idea what to do. I'm going as fast as I can but I know its too slow for the actual test. I've done two practice tests already and have only finished one math section so far.

    Congrats on your verbal improvement! Keep studying those vocab words and reading as much as you can between now and test day. As for quant, it sounds like our comprehensive GRE math course would be perfect for you: www.dominatethegre.com/gre-prep-courses-online/full-quantitative-course/. It will give you the prefect methodology for probability and combinations ("how many ways...?") questions and make them super easy for you, and it'll help you break through your arithmetic/algebra issues including showing you numerous non-standard strategies so that you don't have to solve those questions types in the traditional way, which is often where students go wrong. Seven weeks is still plenty of time to prepare for the GRE even if you were starting from scratch, which you're not. Keep the faith! And let me know if there's anything else I can do to help. Good luck!

    How much time one needs to prepare is the main question I have. If you were advising someone who plans to take the test in four months, would you say that's not enough time? If it is, how much time per day or per week based on your experience? And how much time should be spent on content vs strategy?

  • @DominatetheGRE

    @DominatetheGRE

    6 жыл бұрын

    Four months is plenty of time. To give you an idea, my Full GRE Prep Course is designed around a 7-week syllabus. That assumes approximately 6-10 hours per week of watching instructional videos, working practice problems, and taking full-length practice tests. My students often leave another week or two to keep working practice problems before taking the real thing. But 2-3 months (no more than 100 hours) should be sufficient to fully prepare for the GRE. As for the split between content and strategy, they're really sort of intertwined. What I mean by that is, when you're learning a specific topic -- motion problems, for example -- you start by learning any underlying formulas and/or methodologies, but then you also learn shortcuts and strategies for doing certain types of motion problems, including working backwards or making up numbers when appropriate. So you're sort of learning both at the same time, if that makes sense.

    The answer to that is more than I can type here, but here are a couple thoughts. For the verbal section, obviously learning a lot of vocabulary will help. But there are also a lot of strategies and methodologies that will help you get right answers even if you don't know what some of the words mean, and on RC questions as well. For AWA, you need to learn how to effectively analyze arguments and spot the author's unstated assumptions so that you can attack them and suggest ways of strengthening them. I cover all of this in our Full GRE Verbal Course here: www.dominatethegre.com/gre-prep-courses-online/full-verbal-course/. I'm looking forward to working with you!

    This could be done in SUCH an easier way. The car will make up 8 miles every hour on the front car, since it is moving 8 miles per hour quicker than car b. We know that 20 miles separates each car. So... 20-8(1hr)= Car A is 12 miles behind 12-8(2hr) = Car A is 4 miles behind 4-8(3hr) = -4 (car A is now 4 miles ahead of B) -4 minus HALF of 8 (3.5hr) = -8 The car is now 8 miles ahead of B. The answer is 3.5 hrs. So. Much. Easier!

Additionally, sometimes schools offer GRE waivers for students who are going to apply to their school. You may want to check with your target schools and see if they offer any such stipends. It sounds like my comprehensive GRE game plan is exactly what you need. There's definitely a lot to learn, but as the old adage goes, you eat an elephant one bite at a time. Same too on the GRE, take it one step at a time!

    To be honest, the most concerning part for me is the Verbal Reasoning. From what I've seen on practice tests that I've done, much of the vocabulary appears to be from a dialect of English that just simply isn't used anymore. Many of the words sound as if the test was written by Dr. Seuss. There doesn't really seem to be a way to "reason" or "deduce" your way to an answer, either--you either know the words or you don't.

    Haha, we definitely don't use "big" GRE words in our everyday conversations any more. That said, I do see them often in my own reading, especially when I'm reading authors or journalists who [fortunately] still have an extensive vocabulary. There's a lot of nuance wrapped up in some of those big words, and it really helps to get meaning across. As for your second point, I teach a lot of strategies in my verbal course videos for helping you get right answers even when you don't know what a word means. A lot of it does come down to knowing the words, but you can definitely use clues in the rest of the sentence to figure out what type of word must go in the blank -- and eliminate some clearly wrong answer choices that at worst improves your guessing odds.

    Glad this video was a confidence booster for you! Two months is plenty of time to fully prepare for the GRE and boost your score significantly. To give you an idea, my Full GRE Prep Course is designed around a 7-week syllabus, so your timeframe is great. But it will take focused and structured preparation, as you're discovering. Send me an e-mail (brett@dominatethegre.com) and we can discuss your study plan further.

    That's interesting. And you're exactly right -- not only is GRE math different than traditional math (it's more reasoning-based), but the timing element throws a whole new wrinkle into the mix. A 160 should still make you competitive at a lot of schools, though. Nice work and good luck!

    The two go hand-in-hand! The more strategies and content you learn, and the better your pattern recognition gets, the more confident you'll be and the faster you'll be able to work the problems. Step 1, take a course (like ours) and learn how to solve every GRE question the right way. Step 2, work dozens (if not hundreds) of practice problems. Your confidence will grow, as will your speed! And then of course take lots of full-length practice tests so that you can hone your time management. You've got this! I'm here to help. We'd love to work with you.

    Thanks for sharing, Rene. Remember that you don't have to become an algebra major to do well on GRE math. Brush up on the different math concepts tested on the exam, obviously, but always with an eye toward how they appear in actual GRE questions. Then, as discussed in this "GRE Mastery Series," be sure to learn our different non-standard math strategies so that you can get right answers even if you don't immediately know how to do the relevant math. I've had plenty of my students who start off "not good at math" end up doing really well on the GRE. I'm confident that you can, too!

    The "mini" equations are DISTANCE equations, so what you want to add to each side are distances. Hence why we add 28 MILES to Car A's distance to equate the two. 50 represents a RATE, so it wouldn't make sense to add it to one of the Car's distances. Does that make more sense to you now?

    The good news is that on the GRE, if you get stuck on a question you can mark it and come back to it later. It also sounds like you need to help getting un-stuck on questions and knowing where to begin on hard problems. That comes from pattern recognition and the types of strategies I teach in these free KZread videos but also more in-depth in our Full GRE Prep Course: www.dominatethegre.com/gre-prep-courses-online/full-gre-course/. Good luck and let me know how else I can help!

    Think about it this way. Which car is driving further? Car A is. Car A is driving 28 miles further than Car B, since it has to drive 20 miles just to catch up plus another 8 miles to go past him. So if I want to equate the two cars' distances, I need to add 28 to Car B's distance since currently it has driven 28 miles less than Car A. Put another way, let's pretend I've driven 100 miles (think of me as Car A) and you've driven 72 miles (think of you as Car B). Who's total do we need to add 28 to in order for our distances to be equal? Obviously yours.

    When setting up the original equation, I could equally have gone with dA - 28 = dB. That's the same as dA = dB + 28.
