If the GRE is "Optional," Should You Take it Anyway?

In this unusual application cycle due to ongoing pandemic concerns, a number of graduate and business schools have made the GRE "optional" (or waived the requirement entirely). If you're applying to one of those programs, should you take the GRE anyway? For whom is it a good idea to still apply with a GRE score as a way to boost your candidate profile and demonstrate readiness for the grad school classroom?
To help answer this important question, we've invited Barbara Coward, founder of MBA 360 Admissions Consulting, to share three considerations that will help you make the decision that's best for you. As someone who has read applications for a top business school, Barbara knows what sets applicants apart -- and whether a good GRE score might be what ends up getting you over the hump.
If you decide to take the "optional" GRE -- or if you're applying to a program that is still requiring it -- let us help you get the score you need. If you're going to bother taking it you might as well dominate it, right?! Check out our top-rated GRE prep courses and choose the package that's right for you: www.dominatethegre.com/gre-pr...

I've tried asking why I wasn't accepted and their response was "we do not provide feedback on your materials, interview, or application. Try again next year".

That's surprising. Did you try calling the admissions office? That sounds like a stock e-mail response on their end. Sometimes they're more communicative via phone.

What does "waived" mean when it comes to the GRE scores? Does it mean we should not even send the scores? Or does it mean GRE score is optional?

If the admission committee is going to alot extra points to students submitting GRE score then it doesn't make sense to say it's optional. Please provide clearity on this aspect. Are extra points provided or not ?

Happy to provide some clarity. They don't "give" points, per se, but if you do well on the test, then it would provide an additional proof point for your ability to succeed in your studies at the graduate level. I am not aware of any school that awards points. Hope this helps!"

What if an applicant does well in his undergraduate but has a moderate score on the GRE, does this affect the application negatively if score is submitted?

Terrific question! The adcom is looking for evidence of academic ability and it sounds like you have a strong proof point from undergrad. As result, you could have more leeway with the standardized test. It depends, of course, on the program, some schools are more focused on standardized tests than others. I know one top school mentioned that they factor the GPA more than the GMAT. Hope that helps!

@@barbaracowardmba360 Thank you for your reply. In other words, since an applicant cannot know which the adcom considers more (GPA or GRE), is it advisable he doesn't submit a score if it is moderate; say less than minimum scores stated on the program website?
