How To Score 339 out of 340 on the GRE (170V, 169Q)

Before we jump into my personal strategies, it's critical to understand how the GRE algorithm works to get a perfect score. There are 6 sections on the GRE - the essay section, 2 20-question Verbal sections, 2 20-question Quantitative sections, and one 20-question experimental section, which may be either verbal or quantitative, OR a research section. The essay section and experimental section do NOT count toward your total score. This means you can totally bomb either section and still end up with a perfect score. The essay section is recognizable and will always come first. Similarly, if you get a research section, it will come at the end of the exam and be preceded by information that indicates the section will be unscores. HOWEVER, the unscored experimental section looks just like any other Verbal or Quant section and can come at any point in order. This means that if you get an experimental section, you will not know which section is experimental and won't count toward your score - we'll talk more about this later in the video.
So the 2 scored Verbal and 2 scored Quant sections are the only sections that count toward your total score. The first section of each type is the same difficulty for everyone. The questions are pre-set, meaning you can skip questions and come back to them - again, more on this later. Depending on the number of questions you get right and wrong on the first section, you will get one of three second sections: an easy second section, a medium second section, and a hard second section. While the section you get will vary, like the questions in the first section, the questions in the second section are pre-set, so once again, you can skip questions and come back to them.
Now for scoring. We start with raw score for each section - the number of questions you got right. Then, your score on each section is scaled based on the difficulty of second section. In essence, answering a hard question right gets you more points than answering a medium question right, which in turn gets you more points than answering an easy question right. Finally, slight adjustments are made for to account for variations in difficulty across different versions of the test.
Now no one outside of ETS knows exactly how this raw to scaled score conversion works out, but from the data we've been able to gather, there isn't much room for error. For Verbal, you may be able to miss a single question across the two sections and still get a perfect score. Quant is even less forgiving - it doesn't appear that you can miss any questions and end up with a perfect score.
What does all of this indicate about my scores? I got a 170 on Verbal. Verbal is typically more forgiving than Quant - there's a good chance that I missed one question across the two sections and still got a perfect score. Quant is less forgiving - my 169 score indicates I must have missed one question somewhere on the two scored Quant sections. However, for both Verbal and Quant, I must have scored high enough on the first section to move onto the "hard" second section. I also got a third, experimental Quant section, which I do not think went very well (more on that to come). Additionally, I completed the essay, which I got an adequate score on, but didn't prioritize. Neither of these impacted my total score.
Onto strategy: getting a perfect GRE score relies on two things: good study and good test day strategy. We'll start by focusing on study.

    Justine DeMarco That’s why it’s one of many factors that grad schools take into account when reviewing applications. It’s the factor that tells grad schools that you were willing to sit down and study for months specifically to get into grad school. Quantitative reasoning is also a quick way to check for rigorous logical thinking, so it’s not completely useless. I too wish I didn’t have to sit down and learn a bunch of vocabulary that I don’t ever use, but I understand its purpose in weeding out people that are just “naturally gifted” and haven’t taken the time and dedication to learn many useless words.

    @@gonzalezm244 well some of us think there are better ways to measure determination. The test is just math from high school and impractical vocabulary, as you must recognize from your description. Why should people be made to suffer through something so ultimately useless? I can get into a program without the best GRE scores, but it's still a waste of time and $200.

  • @gonzalezm244

    @gonzalezm244

    Justine DeMarco I don’t mean determination in general, as, yes, there are better ways to measure that. I mean in the context of getting into grad school. It’s kind of challenging you “are you willing to do all of this for the soul purpose of getting into grad school?” Because you might be very accomplished in your field and know a lot about that particular area, but there are many people that haven’t had that same level of success that feel that grad school is their way of getting started. The GRE is a great way for those people to show their commitment to academics and getting into the school despite not having as much success as someone like you. I agree that the test is expensive and that should be changed.

    Ignoring the essay portion is irresponsible at best. If you're taking the GRE, it's likely you're in a field that involves a lot of research/writing. Every humanities major, social science, etc. There are grad programs that require a 5.5 at least. ETS posts every possible prompt on their website. It's wise to practice outlining/writing at least 10 or 15 of these prompts if you want to kill that portion of the exam.

    i think some of these comments (or a lot of them) aren't thinking about the fact that getting an almost perfect score also means that either through practice or even before practice, you are extremely academically capable, which means if you know how to comprehend accurately to difficult materials, you must know how to write adequately as well. If you know how to reason logically, even through the quant proportion, it means you know how to reason in a different way in essays too. If you are short of any of these qualities you are not the person getting an almost perfect score. What I get from this video is that it doesn't matter how beautiful your language is in a literature way, it matters as long as you get the logical thinking with complexity right, and you know basic but professional ways to express that. What else do you wanna hear about "how to get a perfect score"? "By magic"?!!! "By talking yourself into I'm so smart so studying 5min a day does the job"?!!! Ok ok I get it, but I had a hard time on vocabularies and it's still a pain for me. I have a vocab book that contains the most frequent 3000 words appear in the GRE and I have been spending one year on it. I still can only remember 20% of them. Imagine a 2 blank's text completion question has 5 blanks for me. Not to mention the sophisticated grammar used in readings. What a nightmare

    Dude, how did you get a 162 in verbal? I can reach 167-168 in quant but I can't cross 155 in verbal. I need those extra marks to boost my score. Well, I have done everything a normal student does to prepare for the verbal section. How do I push it to the next level?

  • @haotianxie6684

    @haotianxie6684

    5 жыл бұрын

    Alpesh Patil you should try to get hard difficulty on the second verbal, which means you can get at most 3 questions wrong on the first verbal section. If your second verbal's difficulty is hard, your score starts from 158 (over the 155 you want). If your second section isn’t hard difficulty, the most you can get is 157. My strategy for verbal is to always mark and skip the time consuming questions and comeback later, my mind sometimes subconsciously run these questions when I’m doing the others. Additionally I think I read somewhere that gre also gives individual questions difficulties, and the higher the difficulty, the fewer point it is worth. I don’t know if it is true, but I am pretty sure got quite a couple (~8) really hard questions wrong and I didn’t get too much punishment for doing so. Nonetheless I’ve only taken the test once, take that with a grain of salt.

    hey, I'm no expert but I can tell you how I'm studying for my GRE next month. I recommend getting Princeton's Cracking the GRE, it is one of the best for cracking the verbal section of the test. Some don't recommend it for the maths section but I'm studying it for all sections anyways. Then I'm going to spend around 15 days solving practice tests from the book, online and most importantly example tests provided by ETS! This is very important because these practice tests (from ETS) contain questions that were previously given on GRE tests that no one else is licensed to provide; this way you'd be able to see the exact format and content of GRE questions. I should mention that while I'm completely fluent, English is my third language so I'm telling you my process as a non-native english speaker. Best of luck, and I'd be very thankful if you would offer any piece of advice you've come across while researching the best ways to study for the test.

    section 1 is always analytical writing but for section 2 it could be quant or verbal. If for section 2 it is verbal the order u said is ryt and if it is quant in section 2 the order is opposite of what u said. Overall in GRE there will be 2 quant and 2 verbal sections and there will be 1 additional section which could be quant or verbal. And this 1 additional section is research section and no one knows how ETS selects it from those sections. The additional section's score doesn't count but the important part is, it is not like if u perform a section badly that would be additional. Your best scored section could also be considered additional section.

  • @zach8151

    there are 6 sections. section 1 is always writing. Then 2 3 4 5 & 6 are Ex1: VQVQV or Ex2: QVQVQ. If V has 3 sections as in example 1, then one is an unidentified research section which will not be graded toward your final score, and if ex 2 then one of the Q sections is an ungraded research section. I just took the test and did very well. Good luck!

  • @Brian-ey4xt

    @Brian-ey4xt

    My opinion is that GRE is easier than GMAT, but if you're applying to a business school that accepts GRE, they'll normalize your GRE score to compare it to everyone who is applying with GMAT score so it shouldn't matter all that much. There are two reasons I think GMAT was harder. First was the quantitative section of GMAT requires more logical reasoning, especially with the data sufficiency questions. If you have a STEM background, I'd double down on my statement that GRE quant section is way easier than GMAT just due to the type of routine calculations you need to do and how familiar it will feel. The other reason I think the GMAT was harder was that there exist a few published conversion tables for GRE to GMAT and my GRE (167 Q, 163 V) translated to a higher score (730-740 depending on which chart you look at) than what I actually got on the GMAT (a 720 ... and I'd say I had a pretty good test day for both of them). One caveat to this response is that I didn't study much for either test (about 10 days for each with a Barron's book and exams were separated by about a month). If you're going all out studying for a long time, I have no clue which one is easier to improve your score on with equivalent time investment.

    @DildoSnuggie That's not true. The test doesn't even go as far as even the most basic of Calculus, which is the highest form of HS math. HS math is master-able. It's just this weird quasi-skill of test taking. For example, you gotta know how to approach every type of problem correctly, so as to minimize time. I find it annoying because I feel it doesn't accurately assess the true mathematical ability that someone has (or should be assessed by).

  • @BOBofGH

    @BOBofGH

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@lraoux I totally agree. The GRE does not test pure mathematical skill. It tests your knowledge of how to take the GRE. And furthermore this knowledge is often best acquirable through purchasing ETS study materials. The whole thing is a quasi-scam. However, I don't think being very gifted in math hurts either. It can help you solve the problems faster.

    @DildoSnuggie Standardized testing can never give a truly accurate measure of a student's potential, ability and/or extent of knowledge; but it can give a blurry indicator. To say that knowing how a student can perform on the GRE is the best knowledge on how to calibrate him/her is like saying the Miami Dolphins are winning the Superbowl next year.
