Gravitas Plus: Europe's hypocrisy on fossil fuels

Europe promised to lead the world on climate change. It lectured developing nations for relying on coal. Now the same Europe is conveniently buying coal and restarting coal-fired power plants. What happened to its climate goals? Can it still preach others? Palki Sharma exposes Europe's hypocrisy.

Ok but how to explain that Europe's change in renewable energy generation has increased? If Europe was being hipocritical they would be SWAPPING renewable energy for coal. Europe is going back to coal on a short term basis to compensate for its dependence on Russian oil. By choosing to implement sanctions and eliminating this dependence on Russia, it is giving a strong message of condemnation towards Russia's invasion of Ukraine's sovereignty. India meanwhile continues to provide Russia business by purchasing their cheap oil. How is it hypocrisy? Choosing to rely on coal on a short term basis to prevent a mass shortage of energy for its local population, while continuing to sanction Russia is a far better decision than relying on Russian Oil, revenues of which will indirectly be used to fuel the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

But the nations are split over it. Ppl should not mistake short time actions, like burn more coal ore more oil, with the will to go green. We will in the next years see massive investments, so Europa is self reliant on energy. I live in Denmark where the plan was for biogas to replace gas by 2034 now it looks like the goal will be achived in 2024. The EU did not ditch their goals. As mentioned this is an emergency measure. Regular citizens are even turning to firewood(!) to ensure that they'll be able to keep themselves warm this coming winter. The EU failed to acknowledge the fact that if there was ever to be a conflict of any kind with Russia, there would be severe consequences for our energy supply. Our nuclear power plants are being shut down, it will take a decade to get new ones online. Our renewable energy sources are far away from being able to provide anywhere near 100% of the energy needed to keep things going. On the other hand, the use of fossil fuel and the emissions from the EU can NOT be compared to that of others. When we are talking about coal in particular, take a close look at India and China. Together they amount to about 60% of coal usage globally. Both have signed the Paris agreement which is great but there's a lot of work to be done still (for all of us). But at this point you could also argue that it's hypocritical for a country like India to go after the EU, especially when the only reason we're doing it is an energy/financial crisis. Let's stop pointing fingers at each other and try to continue to make a healthier world together.

The term "Carbon Footprint" was ivented by BP, the multinational oil corporation. Notice how they always attack coal, and not oil. The truth is, Climate change is almost completely in the control of massive corporations and the government, not the people driving to work and going on holidays. All the oil companies do is lobby governments to give them favourable regulation. The Carbon offsets and carbon credit industry is worth more than 250 Billion. Among the small groups of people planting trees, there are just massive corporations buying and selling credits to each other, which the governments can hand out. They don't care about solving the problem at all. Its all about cornering this new market and making it more profitable. WION, do your job.

What you said must be acknowledged and actively pursued to change for the better if we want to actually improve our environment; not play with legislated "credits" beaurocratic games anymore. It remindse of federal income tax brackets, and how the 10% elite controlled lawmakers hoodwink the 90% by putting high tax rates on the high income brackets, then add so many loophole exceptions that actual tax rates are very low for the richest 10%. It's a subtle tool for redistribution of wealth from the poorest to the richest. Warren Buffet is sn extremely wealthy man of integrity He understands and disagrees with all the loopholes that give the richest a deceptive free pass on paying taxes. A few years ago he even made a video about the fact that by the time his accountant got through with his taxes (per the USA tax code) his taxes were less than his secretary pays. Warren Buffet made the video to alert the 90% that their own government was screwing them over. I really respect him. Both the Democrats and Republicans are doing it to us. We MUST HAVE AT LEAST 2 OR 3 NEW PARTIES. Best if the existing two go away.

As a European I think this is a completely biased and unfair assessment. Many countries in Europe have switched (over the last 20 years which isn't too long) to 30-40% power generation from renewables. Could more have been done? Yes. But we were doing a fairly decent job of going fully green. I mean If we go to 90% production from renewables in 50 years that will be a huge success. It's not our fault Putin started a war in our backyard and pulled the plug on half our energy overnight. In fact if India didn't try to play both sides against the middle Putin might have been shut down sooner. Regardless we will have coal as a stop gap for an extra year or two which is inconsequential but in the long run it will actually be better for the environment. We were a bit too slow to go green but now instead of 30-50 years we will go green and finish our energy transformation sooner hopefully in 10-20 years because we won't make the mistake to be beholden to Russia ever again.

Trump (and others) warned the EU, but they knew better being so attached to the global climate emergency UN/WEF fraud. They now suffer the consequences. Extraordinary gullibity by the EU. Breathtaking incompetence! The EU need to get themselves out of this self inflicted mess by generating more coal, gas or uranium fired electricity! Sooner the better - though its too late for this winter. Many Europeans will perish as a result (hypothermia and hunger) of this EU stupidity. And despite this evidence - Australian socialists are determined to walk off the same cliff.

Palki said that Russia cut off its supply of natural gas to Europe. According to the Duran, for example, this is false, and Europe cut itself off of Russian gas, supposedly in an attempt to hurt the Russian economy, in an apparently solidarity with Fascist Ukraine. Am I knit picking?, yeah, maybe I guess. But on the other hand, it's kind of glaring inaccuracy. Most of Europe, under the influence of the European commission imposed sanctions on Russia banning the importation of Russian natural gas and oil. But Hungary, for example, refused to agree and reveived an exemption. Apparently Bulgara is currently attempting to resecure access to Russian gas because it desperately needs it. It's all seems very messed up, but it seems Europe is basically facing a self-imposed energy crisis because it doesn't want to continue using Russian energy. Cheers
