I was there as well. It was a great 4 days - with a day break. So sorry about your lovely lady and her loss. Memories and these moments help me remember the best times.
When they went back into the chorus and Brent smiled at them, that was sweet.
This song was written by Robert Hunter for Janis Joplin. It’s actually called “Birdsong for Janis. She passed away fifty years ago today.

I heard someone once ( a fellow musician like me) refer to it as 'surviving your encouragement ", whether that's a bad day, week, month at some job you don't like, a trip to the in-laws, a jail term ( hopefully not that), or pretty much any situation where you can't fully be your authentic self. I think most of us find ourselves there. Can also be a bout of depression, anxiety, whatever. If we all just hold on tight during those times, we will make it through to the other side!!

MAGIC BIRD SONG
You know when Jerry is pushing his glasses back they are in an intense jam !
I was at this show! I had just been introduced to the Dead that summer and it was my third show. This is when I really got “it” and from then on felt like being married to the Grateful Dead. ❤
Did you hear all that cheering at the beginning of Bird Song? One of those voices is mine. I worked security for that show on New Year's Eve '87 as a Bill Graham Presents Bluecoat in what I thought was going to be my final show before retiring after nearly a decade of working security. Well as it turned out I wasn't quite done yet and I went on to work another 5 years worth of Dead shows, *laughing*. Bird Song has always been one of my favorite Jerry Garcia sung Dead toonz, especially because of the jam in the middle. This was a great performance and I can still remember swaying with all the other Deadheads while standing in the pit behind the barricade on the floor of the Oakland Coliseum. I worked every Grateful Dead New Year's Eve show from 1979 to 1991, and this was one of my favorites. Thank you so much for this groovy Bird Song. Happy Thanksgiving to you my friend, Cheers, Mick Flaire!

87 was the year of my first grateful dead concert. I remember vividly sitting in my bed room stoned and recording this crispy show!!! soundboards were slightly difficult to get back in those days. this was a real treat for this 17 year old dead head!!!!!!!!!!!
Saw them do this song in Long Beach. Jerry Garcia always took us thru a vortex!!!
I have never yet figured out what to do about good advice that you get, and that you know right away would help you, but that you cannot follow. That’s when you turn to Jerry.
i love the older refined restrained yet flowing & brilliant late 80's early 90's Jerry. such a blessing to have had 30 years of this

Ain't nobody messin' with you but you. Your friends are getting most concerned loose with the truth, maybe its your fire. Baby I hope you don't get burned when the smoke has cleared, she said. That's what she said to me you're gonna want a bed to lay your head and a little sympathy. There are things you can replace and others you cannot The time has come to weigh those things. This space is gettin' hot You know this space is gettin' hot. Don't be sad!

June 1st, 2020 today... Complete mayhem in our world right now. Came here for this song, this version. The exchange of looks and laughs between the boys @ 7:45 is what I needed today and what I think more of the world could use.
I hadn't heard this particular Bird Song in several years. Gave it a listen while making the mashed potatoes. Nice.
Message received. ❤
I was a huge Brent fan, and I loved the interplay of his piano on this and other Dead songs, as well as his and Jerry's musical connectivity. I was as devastated by Brent's loss as I was by Jerry's. Amazing music and band from an era that I was fortunate to be part of.
Beautiful! Makes me feel a little bit better about having to be with family all day 😿😹

Yay! I was There💜🙏🦋🌈😎🌎
I became so enamoured by this song, many years ago as a young man. That when I started finally actualizing and working towards my dream of being a musician/guitarist ,( sadistically delayed. I didnt pick it up until I was 25. I became aware of it at 5, and asked for it when I turned 10, as I was told to do, by Lew DeWitt before he became a Statler Brother, so much more to this story ...though that really isn't important now nor the point.) This became one of the songs that I have studied as I continue on this path. This song and many other songs by the dead ,spoke to my heart ,they gave me hope as I learned. I am slowly taking this out and playing in public. I looked over the comments and maybe it's a given , though this version of this song , and the way it was shot shows the incredible musical interplay between Jerry and his friend Brent. You could certainly hear it in their music though I think this is the first time it has been so accurately captured on film, the love they showed each other thru playing . The smiles on Jerry's face and Brent's and how they musically complemented each other as they worked together to make one of the most beautiful versions of this song. You know sometimes I think we talk more about things and talk less about the love we bring. This song always made me feel loved because it is. Thank you for putting this up. Peace Matt.
Beautiful:)
I saw a summer of 87 show Roanoke Civic Center I was but 16

Id love someone to re-edit some of the shows where they felt the need to use the strobe/trip effect every time the band got spacey. It this point in my life I really just want to see Jerry in as much clear high resolution film as possible and remember the glory

All I know is something like a bird within her sang, All I know she sang a little while and then flew on, Tell me all that you know, I'll show you snow and rain. If you hear that same sweet song again, will you know why? Anyone who sings a tune so sweet is passin' by, Laugh in the sunshine, sing, cry in the dark, fly through the night. Don't cry now, don't you cry, don't you cry anymore. Sleep in the stars, don't you cry, dry your eyes on the wind. All I know is something like a bird within her sang, All I know she sang a little while and then flew off, Tell me all that you know, I'll show you snow and rain.

Nice choice - something from my only GD New Year’s Eve show. ! How about putting out the “Promised Land” from this show, since it wasn’t on the dvd release of this show ? (nor was most of set 3 with the Nevilles) - would be great to have more unreleased stuff. Thanks for this !

Some of the images, video, and even what many now consider cheesy effects did leave imprints though many were forgotten until I've seen them again on the videos out there. I did make my own visuals but those things on the screens were either cues on things to contemplate over or sometimes a good laugh even when it was like an inside joke on the reality of the day or a million other things. I can't even begin on things when trails and colors or the vibrations took over. 😒 sure miss the good times and receiving tickets and that whole excitement.
Man, Jerry was only 45 or 46 here...youd think he was 65. Not trying to be negative, love jerry..
