Grateful Dead - Bird Song (New York, NY, 10/30/80)
Музыка
"From Jerry's first solo album, released in 1972, Bird Song was an exploratory part of Grateful Dead live shows 1971-1973, after which it disappeared from the repertoire. To everyone's great surprise, and joy, it returned in September 1980, played acoustically at the Warfield and Radio City shows in the Fall of 1980 to celebrate the Dead's 15th anniversary. A month later, it returned to the touring setlist in its electric form, where it would stick around for the next 15 years." - David Lemeiux

Reckoning healed me.
What a beautiful, ethereal song. I've always loved it and it's wonderful that Jerry and Robert wrote it in memory of Janis Joplin.

Old friend gave me this on vhs. Now have on disc. Such a treasure. 🥀
Ensemble playing right here bro.
Many years ago, my parents said to me “okay, you’ve been raving about this band, the Grateful Dead, for so long. Play us one song and we’ll tell you what we think.” I popped in this song, from the Dead Ahead release, into the VCR. The best, most beautiful representation of the band I could find. Their response : “this is boring.”

If they knew it was about Janis Joplin they mite think differently. Depending on their age. Written by Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter.
It's a shame that this doesn't include at the end of the song, Bob saying "We're really having fun now." I love that moment as well as the slight smiles by Jerry and the look of Bob's face at the end at the end of the Jerry solo

Jerry's eyebrows tell the whole story !
Every time I think I'm getting good at playing acoustic guitar, I watch Jerry do it and realize I am nothing.

Well then don’t watch Doc Watson, Richard Smith, Jerry Reed, Tommy Emanuel, or Chester Atkins. These players make me think my finger picking is no good.
“They're not the best at what they do, they're the only ones that do what they do.”
God bless the Grateful Dead
What a wonderful acoustic,,,dreamy version jerry loos like a beautiful lion
Seeing them at Radio City was one of the greatest moments ever.
Ohhhh I love this rendition sooo much 💀🌹🕊
Loved Phil’s bass tone (and playing) on this. This was one of my favorite basses of his.
This is simply extraordinarily beautiful!
It's not every day you find Jerry in such good voice, very nice version, I was at Radio City for this tour.

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS ACOUSTIC VERSION OF 1 OF MY FAVORITE SONGS ALSO ALTHEA, STELLA BLUE AND I CAN GO ON AND ON THERE ALL GREAT. BUT IT'S NICE WHEN YOU HAVE SUCH A VARIETY OF SONGS TO PICK FROM. THERE ALL MY FAVORITES .❤ THIS BAND SO MUCH AND OBVIOUSLY JERRY'S NOODLING😅 AND BRENT'S HAMMOND AND THE ENERGY IS OFF THE WALL. I GUESS THAT'S WHAT A SPEEDBALL WILL DO TO YOU( RIP BRENT MYDLAND & JERRY GARCIA, ALSO VINCE WELTNICK WHO PASSED AWAY FROM A SELF INFLICTED KNIFE WOUND WITH A JAGGED EDGE. MAN OH MAN. THAT'S SO SAD AND I PRAY THAT HE IS FORGIVEN AND ALLOWED INTO THE (PROMISED LAND). WE'RE WELL ALL BE TOGETHER FOR EVER AND EVER IF WE MAKE IT TO THE PROMISED LAND 🌄🙏🙏🙏❣️&🕯️TO ALL OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GROUP ESPECIALLY THE KEYBOARDIST'S THAT HAVE ALL PASSED AWAY. TO ME I THINK IT'S EITHER A BIG COINCIDENCE (WHICH I DON'T BELIEVE IN THIS MANY COINCIDENCES IN A ROW BUT WHAT DO I KNOW. I DON'T THINK IT IS A CURSE EITHER!!! JUST A LOT OF BAD LUCK AND WHEN I SAY BAD LUCK. MAN OH MAN THEY REALLY HAVE SOME KIND OF DARK CLOUD HANGING OVER HEAD. 😢 IT'S VERY HARD TO GET OVER THE LOSS OF ONE FRIEND AND A BAND MEMBER. I KNOW THAT THERE DEATHS WERE ALMOST A DECADE APART AND KEITH PASSED AWAY FROM A MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT & IT WAS ALMOST A YEAR AFTER KEITH & DONNA WERE ASKED TO LEAVE THE GROUP. AND BRENT IS ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF PASSING AWAY AFTER PLAYING WITH THE GRATEFUL DEAD FOR A YEAR LONGER THAN THE UNUSUAL 10 YEAR RUN WITH THERE KEYBOARDIST 🎹 I MISS THEM ALL. I DON'T KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO VINCENT TO SLASH OWN THROAT WITH A SERRATED KNIFE THAT'S WHAT IS SUSPICIOUS TO ME. ANY WHO I SAID MORE THAN I THOUGHT I WOULD.
One of the many.Huntrr/Garcia masterpieces.. fkn brilliant song all the way.around
My first show.
This is the best Greatful Dead Concert Ever!!!!...the Beat to this song is Fantastic 😎🌈...it shows we no longer have music 🎶...this Generation in 2022... will never have the Quality of this!!!!!

It’s interesting how more involved vocally Brent is later on in 89/90 shows.

If you hear that same sweet song, well you know why.....
For many years, Bird Song was Hunter and Garcia's hidden elegy to Janis Joplin. In electric shows it was a high point to many first sets, and it was a mainstay of the band's acoustic performances in the early 1980's, offering a sweet, mournful lyric and frequently inspired jammin
So sweet
Hunter/Jerry one of many masterpiece. So many live performances Phil plays it often, Bob play it tons with Dead and Co. Plays it with wolf bros too. I love all the versions, this one is unreal.. all the sudden everyone's like showed we get here.. Bob brings em back around Duane Alman said Jerry could walk on water.. but he was pretty fn high..
Brilliant
Could be their best Birdsong performance ever, including 1972.
