I named my daughter for this song as well. When she was 9, we learned the 1st time they played Althea for a live audience was on her birthday, but 14 years before she was born!
To me this is the most mysterious, entrancing Althea. Aimless, disorganized feel and yet.. Weir steps in, plays an unusually and delightfully active part. The band recognizes the meditative mood and keeps it going.

I now found a performance from 1980 that is very similar, but more structured (found on the net only labeled Crazy Night 1980) This loose, early performance is great.

Especially love Jerry's guitar on this version. But have yet to find a better one than 81 at the Garden.
Despite a Franklin's Tower quote ony arm and an unabiding love for Bertha, this is my favorite Grateful Dead song.
I love listening to the “best” versions, but there is something special about the ones between
and one night, after hours of listening to this song... this concert..... my choice friend.. who has since left this earthly realm...... shared these words "My core. Shakes.. when. I leave. This life.. my anthem.. ty" and so I listen again ...... for me... for Us
Nobody like the Grateful Dead they weave such a beautiful quilt of music just lays on you so perfectly!!

We were there. It was Henry J Kaiser back in the day. I remember one time getting there real early. There was a craft fair/market in the little park across from the front door. There were big PA speakers out on the entry and they were playing the Revolver album. Great memories.
Me & some buddies of mine had advance tickets to the prior night’s (12/30) show. There was something about the look on Garcia’s face after the Brokedown Palace encore that night that beckoned us for a consecutive night- which we’d never done before. Fortunately, at that point in time, it was still somehow possible to show up the day of the show and buy a ticket at the window, provided you showed up early enough. Which we did. John Cippolina played, as he did when they closed Winterland the year before. What can say? It was a lucky place to be.

Part if the fun of the dead. Makes them hard to play with others especially if everyone has different versions they like

@@steinbauge4591 They obviously decided against it for whatever reason. They have done this type of thing with several songs, making changes over the years, changing the arrangements, keys, and lyrics. I’m not saying it was bad. There’s nothing wrong with trying something or deciding to do it differently. After listening to Althea so many times in its final format coming across this one took me by surprise. Good stuff.
This song will last for eternity.

Well clearly the band and Jerry specifically liked the idea of the music never stopping and this thing going forever allowing taping of their shows .I also believe he had a good understanding of where technology was going with the internet and knew we'd be watching and listening to his music on platforms like this in the future.
this was a great show I was there

Asherah.. Would be Altheas Mother. Skulls and Roses Forever. Nice bright and twangy slide playing Bob. Cool mello version...reeks red rooster aint it?
12/26/79 one of my all time favorite 2nd sets ever N.F.A 65-95!!!
The other day my guitar prodigy nephew starts bagging Jerry. I chuckled. I'm 40, he's my 21 year old nephew, watch ya gunna do? I jokingly asked him if he could play modally or knew his circle of fifths. If us guitarist types are theoretical mathematicians ( in a way we are) Jerry was like Albert Newton Hawking. Get my drift?
Killer Althea.
Thank you so much for Sharing this!! Absolutely wonderful!!
Yeah!!! Groovin.
...before Jerry changed sides, after midnight, at the Oakland Auditorium where there was that perpetually sweaty ramp in the back that led to the third level catwalk seating...
Althea in it’s infancy 👍

LOL--you're right and actually in its embryonic stage. This song was featured on Go To Heaven which was released in April 1980.
Well there you go some people see it and some people don't. It's just a point of view. Personally I can't get enough of this tune I'm glad they played it again.
happy holidays to yall
I wonder how many of the audience were tripping balls during this, wish I was one of them
wow, its so good ten guys even liked it after jerry´s tune flipped them upside down. :D
Brandy new Tiger...
♾️💔
Heeard it from spotify..that was a sub though.same nice cut from the guiitar
La versione più drogata ascoltata sin qui. Grandi
Drugs are a hell of a thing. Weir seems like the only one even half-interested in being there.
