Grandsire Royal at Abergavenny, Monmths

Ringing on this magnificent ten, cast by Taylor's in 1947. The video starts with a clip of the tenor being turned over, and then a couple of courses from a quarter peal of Grandsire Royal. They go well, almost too well in fact as they are prone to going over hand and back, but are fantastic to listen to and thoroughly rewarding! The band was awash with KZreadrs ringing in this; Tim Hollinghurst (2,) Nick Bowden (4,) John Gwynne (6,) Simon Edwards (7, C) Aaron Moulder (8,) Stephen Aldridge (9,) & Laura Davies (10) :-)

simonbellringer I still think these are far superior to Blackburn Cathedral, even though Blackburn are nearly identical.

Alan Birney I would agree there - the tower here lends itself to the bells, and the hums from the back ones really show. They also go better than Blackburn and feel loved. I like Blackburn, a good 10, but not often referred to as "classic" in the way these are unfortunately!

simonbellringer Blackburn have been treated as a peal factory, with minimal maintainance, which is a shame. The only work done recently as far as I know is a timber shafted clapper and a bearing bolt on the Tenor, after a bolt sheared-still plenty of room for improvement though and some internal acoustic work would not go amiss. There are a lot of unloved rings in my neck of the woods, and I don't see that changing anytime soon-even the more modern jobs still need a little looking after.

Better than I remember it! Just remember being hot and sticky and unable to really hear the front bells over the back ones. Though lovely, these are all about the back end.

It certainly was hot, I organised the weather too well for my own good ;-) I had no problem from where I was hearing the front ones although the tenor does overpower the others a bit too much and the hums make them a bit mushy. Fantastic bells though, although it is indeed the back end that make them!

Fantastic ringing, a peal you can simply enjoy listening to. Laura really loves the bunt end of the peal. I think she is working toward a peal of Bristol Max on the Tenorcat Liverpool Cathedral LOL

I was so pleased with the ringing we got here, and the bells really lend themselves to it as well! I have been banned from commenting on Laura being on the tenor as normal ;-)

simonbellringer just watched again and that is such lovely ringing and what a BEAUTIFUL sounding ring too.You have to love Taylor heavy bells I see Laura is wearing a wife beater top, that is what they are known as here (Truck drivers wear them) So it could also be a boy beater top . The question is maybe she has intimidated you into no smart comments or she will wipe the floor with you LO extra L

steven rowe Perhaps one day - on my next tour I shall include a couple of 12's for practice ;-) Which reminds me, how is the prospect of a recording of the 12 at St Mary's doing? Fantastic bells, would love to revisit one day!!

Out of curiosity: Grandsire Royal? Is that basically Grandsire Caters + long 10ths in between the dodges in 8/9? Also how does that work at a bob or single where there are bells double-dodging in 4/5, 6/7, and 8/9? Pardon my ignorance; I've never rung Grandsire on anything other than the standard odd numbers.

T hanks for your comment, even bell Grandsire is rarely rung which is unfortunate as it has good scope for music albeit not necessarily conventional! Grandsire Royal is indeed Grandsire Caters with four blows in 10ths between the 8-9 dodges - just like long 9ths in Plain Bob Caters. At the call, it is as in Grandsire Caters but if you are in 10ths place when a call is shouted that bell makes 4 extra blows (6 in total) over the bells over him giving them room to double dodge beneath him. I hope this makes sense and you enjoyed the video. Even bell Grandsire is good fun and an excellent alternative to Plain Bob - give it a go for yourself! :-)

simonbellringer Makes perfect sense. Thanks for that explanation. It definitely sounds fun, and yes I can imagine the music would be rather interesting. I imagine it might be kind of easy to get lost making 6 blows behind; having to keep count for that many strikes. I'd love to give even-numbered Grandsire a go, alas I've never been anywhere in North America that rings it! I don't think I've ever heard it rung at a ringing weekend or anything here. Of course, where I'm at in particular (west/central US) ringing is sparse it can be difficult to find ringers who can ring anything past Plain Bob Doubles, and especially since I'm kind of in the middle of nowhere (Abilene, TX is my home tower). It really is rough being an isolated tower, and I mainly have to go elsewhere to get good ringing (not that I get to travel very often; but if it tells you anything I've been ringing 11 years and just rang my first QP about a month and a half ago; how pathetic is that?). I'll definitely not get to do Grandsire on even numbers in my home tower with my local band (who sadly has trouble striking Bob Minimus much less!) but hopefully sometime at a AGM or something I'll get the chance. It would be interesting to see if my request would even be taken seriously. :-P

***** As I said, it is rarely rung and I am often not taken seriously when I suggest it! But do give it a go if you get a chance and it would be a worthwhile suggestion, something different! In terms of keeping track of 6 blows behind, listen to when the treble hits 3rd place at backstroke on his way up to the back - that is the last blow at the back and the cue to head down to the front :-)
