Grand Central Madison - First Trip and a VERY In-Depth Station Review!

    I love these videos because it's like watching one of those childhood-adventure movies from the 90s like The Goonies, The Sandlot or even Honey, I Shrunk the Kids. Only difference is that instead of having a grandiose adventure, they're just foaming all over a train station, and I am here for it.

    The future escalators at 22:57 are open! That area was opened up last week and it's now a huge pillared hall (not just a skinny hallway near the blue tiled artwork. The escalators were roped off (but running anyway). This week they removed the ropes. I went up and I wasn't exactly sure where I was, but about 10-15 seconds of walking later I was at the main grand central area with the high ceilings with the zodiac ceiling. I know it's the far west side of the station because I had to walk clear across to go to my office which is on the east side. By the way, I am absolutely loving this station it has cut 25 min off my commute and I can walk right to my office in minutes. I have the best commute of my entire life now thanks to this.

  • @nesto1a
    @nesto1a Жыл бұрын

    Underrated part of the video was exploring the connections to the Grand Central North cross passageways. The fastest way to GCM from my office (which is east of the station) actually utilizes the cross passageways; but, it takes a seasoned Grand Central commuter to even know of its existence, let alone knowing how to access/use them. It took me about 5 minutes from street level to GCM mezzanine. Saves the extra time going through the GCT dining concourse or walking outside all the way to Madison Ave.

    Wow Miles, I can't believe you said that at 0:41. That is the hottest take I've ever heard. You had a choice to say what you said, and you did it anyway...brave. Sure it's starting with just shuttle service with Jamaica and sure it was overbudget, but this new link is revolutionary. Data shows 45 percent of LIRR riders are expected to use it, and this will not only ease Penn Station but also help these commuters once there's more service. As they say comrades, if you build it, they will come. Grand Central lives up to its name by being the largest train terminus in the world, and now it's GRANDER Central with the addition of GCM! Something not included in this review is my favorite part of GCM: There's a screen that shows the history of the LIRR rolling stock up until the M9s. And it gets better, it doesn't even acknowledge the M7s, M3s, nor the C3s...based

  • @MilesinTransit

    @MilesinTransit

    So apparently the LIRR history screen is the one that was showing the lobster stuff when we walked by! I heard it takes a full hour to get through each art piece up there, which is really cool!

    A few things: 1) I’m a bit of a germaphobe. Even before the pandemic, I never drank out of water fountains. I always carry a refillable bottle of water with me. 2) Speaking of hygiene, I used the bathroom. I was pissed off (no pun intended) that the sink water was ice cold. Fortunately, I carry hand wipes. 3) Many people have complained that Grand Central Madison doesn’t save time. What they don’t take into account is that the less transfers, the better. For example, if someone on the LIRR wanted to head to the Upper East Side then they’d have to catch the 1, 2, or 3 and take it to Times Square. Then, they’d have to walk through the station and catch the Shuttle. All it takes is one hiccup on the 7th Avenue line to mess up your commute. Grand Central Madison is deep below street level. The conventional route to the main concourse takes quite a while. However, there are several shortcuts. For example, if you wanted to access the Lexington Avenue line from Grand Central Madison then you could use the 43rd Street exit and head towards One Vanderbilt. Once you reach the mezzanine, you’ll see turnstiles. That’s a somewhat underutilized entrance.

    The lack of a one-seat ride from NYP to GC is a flummox. I get it, the tracks are very tracky, but the S should do its job and cut the knot. Would help the Port Auth Bus Term too.

    According to FlightRadar24's playback feature, at the time the train left Jamaica, the only United flight inbound to LGA east of Pittsburgh was UAL1932 ORD-LGA, operated by 737-800 N26215. It passed over the LIRR mainline at 10:57 AM.

    the funny thing is that they never put those ticket machines in at 7:02. I rarely find myself down there, since LIRR is expensive and i would only take it as a shortcut to JFK rather than the 6 to the E train. But I was there in December and they hadn't installed those. You geniunely still have to buy tickets in GCT 100/200 level, or at the start of the mezzanine for the LIRR tracks. It's also REALLY HARD to find an elevator that goes down to the LIRR tracks from the metro north tracks. Trust me. I tried to haul a bunch of luggage on my way to the airport from uni and it was hell. I missed like 2 trains tryingto find elevators, and then trying to find ticket machines, etc. regardless, it's horrible for accessibility reasons, as well as 'I have to haul 2 suitcases and a cardboard box around NYC to get to JFK' reasons.

By the by the New York Times has pictures of the no photo zone, from what other sites said. It's too bad about the number of non working escalators and elevators. Give it time. The Governor really wanted the station opened before the end of the year. Well close enough I guess.

    Re 12:26, the elevator is not keyed off. That is the UP/DOWN keyswitch so technicians can move the cab up and down with the hoistway doors open, for maintenance tasks such as getting access to the top of the elevator cab. Generally they are a captive keyswitch that holds the key in while it is in the UP or DOWN positions, and the are momentary switches that continue to move the cab as long as the key is held in place. RUN/STOP or other ON/OFF for the elevators are a different keyswitch, usually on the side of a doorframe somewhere (as well as inside the cab and inside the hoistway). Re water fountains, for new plumbing it is a good idea to let the water run for 60-300 seconds (1-5 minutes) before drinking, both for taste reasons as well as health reasons. I don't know that you would have gotten different results, but maybe you would. Nice job on the review. I would have liked to have known the fastest it was possible to get between the subway to an LIRR train, not the longest. Whenever I am in New York I find myself a bit frustrated by the lack of route planning tools that take into account the diversity of options and my own weird timing constraints. NYP vs. GCM will only make this worse (well, it would if I took the LIRR which I don't), but perhaps it will increase the demand and somebody will produce more awesome tools. I've been tempted to automate my own tools based on the GTFS feeds, but I'm not in NY often enough for it to have seemed worth it.

    I went to the bathroom right after getting off that train and some guy was in there with a baby, and he said he wanted to be the first person to change a baby diaper in grand central madison. That is the level of nerdity we reached on that train, folks..... So anyway, my office is right by Grand Central and I commute all the flippin way across town from Penn to get to work. This train was made for people like me. This would cut at least 20 min off my commute, as soon as we find out the regular schedule and assuming it works with my home station well enough.
