"Miles, I've never seen people so happy about public transit in my life" that Jeremy, is called influencing. Transit supporters like you two have influenced and inspired the masses to fight for better accessibility. A win like this is better than nada. Meanwhile as I'm watching this light rail extension in Boston open, even though I'm no longer living in Jersey City, I'm still tracking the progress of the long-awaited Hudson-Bergen Light Rail extension to Bergen County. Because it's been pure irony that the so called Hudson-BERGEN Light Rail doesn't even go to Bergen County.

Most of the crowd wasn't railfans! It was mostly Tufts students.
It's warming, even with snow on the ground, to see young people be excited about public transportation expansion and accessibility to commuters.
I honestly never realized that there were so many transit buffs out there. You've opened me to a fascinating world. I think.

I was one of those excited Tufts students!! The red line stop at Davis is close-ish to campus, but the Medford-Tufts stop is located at a super dense part of campus. Most students go through that intersection every day, and it makes taking the train through Sommerville or even into Boston so easy.
Knowing that Steve Poftak was on that first outbound Type 9 with everyone being rowdy and joyful is amazing, especially considering he was just on his phone the whole time
Hot take, but this feels more useful than the Silver Line to Dulles. Sure, it doesn’t go to an airport, but it goes to a University and has stations in dense, walkable areas. The Silver Line, while useful, goes to a sea of parking lots and stroads. This seems so much more useful for people who don’t drive.
@HayastAnFedayi

Def agree…the silver line was a slap in the face to the community along the route of the Washington Street elevated on the Orange Line, the communities of Roxbury and the area were promised equal replacement service but they got the Silver Line.

That is a packed train. It's almost like they should've built, I don't know, not light rail...
Thanks for this video! I lived in Ball Square for several years in the 2010's and in Winchester also. My life would have been fundamentally different if these green line stops had existed when I lived in that area. I could have biked from Winchester like 2 miles down 28 to Tufts to catch the T (which would have been perfect because I worked in Longwood at the time, and the commute took almost two hours each way using the commuter rail to green line), or I could have had the T at my doorstep in Somerville. Also, I was kicked out of a house I was renting in Ball Sq. in like 2012 because the property was sold to a developer anticipating the green line extension to be built in the following year or two. Then it took years just to get Union Square up and running. We need like 20 more of these new stations!!!

Always grateful stuff. I saw your video when you made it to Victoria. If you ever make it to Vancouver I would love to ride our skytrain with you. Easily done in a day.
Miles, I was on that first train with you. I'm the guy from the trolley car who asked you "How are you doing?" at Haymarket station when you on the platform (I rode the first train all the way to Park St.). I couldn't believe how many people were at Medford-Tufts for that first train! I got to Medford-Tufts between 4:05 and 4:10AM (by walking from Boston South station after getting off an Amtrak train from New Jersey) and it wasn't crowded at all. I was expecting at most, maybe, 100 people tops for that first train, but there must have been at least 400 people on that platform waiting for the train to come in. Glad to see a lot of people were excited about the new extension opening. I was also on the train to College Av standing behind you (and Jeremy) in the same car. Are you going to try a "Fastest Rider Alive" run on the T (Red, Blue, Orange, and Green Lines only) at some point now that the new extension is open?

Happy to see this. Many years ago I went to a play in downtown Somerville and had to walk from Lechmere. Not that I mind walking two miles, but I didn't know the house numbering system they used and thought from the address it was a lot shorter, so it seemed to take forever. Fortunately, I was early. Anyway, this new extension would have made it simpler.

I was on the first westbound train to do the full silver line trip to Ashburn, and can confirm it was nowhere near as high energy, the enthusiasm for this extension is awesome! My biggest complaint with this extension is I really feel like it should have included a commute rail infill at Medford Tufts so Lowell Line Riders could benefit from the extension.

Agreed, a Commuter Rail station at Tufts would be great.
The only time i've been on a train remotely as packed as this was on the L5 back from Camp Nou after an FC Barcelona Match earlier this year.
Your first video that gave me anxiety watching. Too many people cramming onto train. Great job not dying.
Poor platform will never be that crowded again.
I literally missed meeting you, I was on the same train coming into Medford, I have the a shot of the new train coming in. But I didn't stay for the ceremony, because I had no idea what was going on. I'm kicking myself because I didn't see you. it's hard to tell but I think I'm in the background at 19:11 because of the hat of the guy getting off the train. Think you could watch mine and see if you recognize yourself? My literal 1 complaint and it's not the T's fault, but it's that Starbucks location is online only, I will never ever use this station, but I think it's better than union square, because they didn't fudge a wheelchair ramp. I know AFC 2.0 is coming eventually, but like union, just put fare gates in for now.
So weird seeing you guys walking around my alma mater.
on my next boston vacation i will ride the GLX.
7:11, Not Wrong, I’d Have The Same Reaction. 😂😂
Ok that settles it- I’m never not going to a transit line/extension opening in my city ever again, even if they most likely aren’t gonna be as exciting as this one was
10:58 I was on that type 8 Also it's interesting how our scores are almost the same
Should Medford/Tufts have a Commuter rail station built next to the Green Line station? Tufts is a station with regional importance and it would make for better connectivity

Damn, congrats! That thing was packed!
I am a person who tried public transportation as needed, while being disabled, it's so miserable getting to a stop just to have the driver fly on by, like in Dallas, it can be too hot, if he's over capacity he should stop long enough to say so instead of flying by. When I worked most likely you could arrive on a bus but had to depend on a ride home, we had to take calls clear up to 4:59:59.99 & the last bus was 5:00, had it been early oh well. You'd call yourself lucky if they run late, but always had extras wheels rolling to improve on time statistics.. now about the only public transportation we have here is prescheduled days ahead, primarily for medical appointment use, God forbid your provider ran late as one of mine always did, monthly.. they ask for what two hour pick-up window, and they still could no-show you (and decline further scheduling) even if they were earlier than that window.. like Boston, NYC, etc, it's cold here at times too and a disabled person doesn't need to be sitting out 2 hours waiting. Some counties have dial-a-ride, priced fair for one county, cross the county line and the fare shoots up.. in my situation just to get to Walmart, I'd have to wait in the convenience store two blocks away to be in the right county, or cross over to the next county into the major shopping district where you most likely have to plan one stop a day [my co-pays for medical are per day, not charged for two providers in a day].. where I used to live crossing one county line for what could only be medical, was over $35 cost each way (before Ukraine crisis).. our nearest hospital was of the band-aid and Tylenol, now go home quality. At least using the veterans hospital, a prearranged ride is free, but they have to drop you off and return within hours. I'm glad I can drive, but what about when my car breaks down.. a mechanic thinks he can buffalo you into a laundry list of repairs just because you depend on a car.. two of us have 4 cars, two of them are rarely used. We were in a pinch for half the fall and down to one. Believe it or not in a town of 600 homes and no crime (many don't even lock up, neighbors are watching, one day someone out of place was seen on the sidewalk, my roommate came back up to lock up) costs less to get liability insurance on one car than a $25K renters policy.. My car is down again.. the seat belt won't extend, and two days before it was fine, my other car was taken off the road because of steering problems (wandering and overcorrecting, "another $275" in parts) we put it's battery in the one that just showed seatbelt problems, and the classic one just had a blowout 3 weeks ago.. see the rotation.. only one works at a time.
I can appreciate 3 AM foaming, but I am too old for that now.
2:36 This is inspiring.
Good thing Happy Birthday to you is Public domain now...
