    A big plus about riding trains is waving to all the cars stuck in traffic! So Detroit Lakes used to be called just Detroit but to avoid confusion with Detroit, Michigan, they changed it to Detroit Lakes in 1927. Détroit is French for strait, which in case of the city in Michigan it refers to the Detroit River, but in the case of Detroit Lakes it refers to a sandbar (that has since been partially submerged for Pelican River watershed navigation) that separates Big Detroit Lake from Little Detroit Lake. The station building's from 1908 but was renovated in 2010 and yes, it's accessible with a wheelchair lift available!

    I live in Detroit Lakes and am glad Miles was able to visit our little city! My wife and I were at Bucks Mill Brewhouse (the microbrewery in the Mall) just a couple evenings ago! Staples also has a significant Amish population in the area and you will frequently see one or more horse and buggy tied to the fence while their riders are waiting for the Builder to roll through Staples at o-dark-bleary. With no cars , for those folks the train is a needed source of regional transportation.

    That slow zoom in on Eli as you discover the bus is cancelled was lovely. Not that the bus was cancelled - while this time made sense, some of these private bus lines are the only way to get from place to place in parts of the country, and they seem to be falling apart more and more of late.

    Jefferson Lines runs a hub and spoke system in Minnesota. All the buses end up in the parking lot of the Westgate Mall as the hub and you have to transfer there to a bus going to your final destination.

    Regarding their JCPenney...it's closing in May. I know, I was just as shocked that the place had a JCPenney, let alone a stand-alone one downtown...but it was too good to be true I suppose. I've been to their former flagship at the Manhattan Mall in NYC many times because I used to live in Jersey City and this is where the 33rd Street PATH is. Their flagship revived that mall big time, but ever since the pandemic began in 2020 and the JCPenney closed in July that year and the mall's Aeropostale moved their spot so they could have an outdoor entrance, the mall has been closed to foot traffic. A shame to look at such a prime location go to waste like that. The first Costco in the US opened in 1983 in Seattle, and then it expanded to Portland and Spokane that same year. Their first headquarters was in Seattle but opted to move to Kirkland just east of Seattle in 1987 (hence their Kirkland products; their current headquarters is in Issaquah which is still within the Seattle metro). Costco is pretty much a suburbia thing, but there ARE urban locations like on Expo Blvd in Vancouver, Rego Park in Queens, 10th Street in San Francisco, and East 117th Street in Manhattan.

    Wait until you hear about Costco's holy pizza! It's made by a ROBOT! This magical machine evenly distributes their delicious sauce on the pizza dough. Thanks to the handy robot, Costco has streamlined its pizza process to make it as efficient (and irresistibly delicious) as possible. First, they make sure to give the pizza dough time to rise before they press it into pies. Next, it goes to the pizza robot for an even layer of sauce. After toppings are added they put it in the oven, which evenly heats the pizza from all angles (in only six minutes!). And, to ensure that it’s always fresh, any pizza that isn’t sold within an hour gets replaced with one straight out of the oven

    Your opinion on Dot's Pretzels is wrong, but I will respect your pretzel preferences regardless. (: On a more serious note, currently living in WI, and having been in the Midwest my whole life, the winter scenery throughout the video feels nice and familiar to me, even if I've never been to the actual places you went through. That's nice. Glad you seem to have enjoyed your time in Minnesota. Can't wait to see what you get up to in Duluth! Also, how does the Amtrak "bidding" process work? There's a chance I'm going to get to go from Milwaukee to Denver round-trip sometime soon, and being able to get cheaper tickets somehow would be reeeal nice.. it'd also be my first train-riding experience in probably close to a decade, only my second one ever, and my first one solo/as an adult as well. Nervous but excited for it, if it actually comes to fruition. Any tips or advice or anything I should maybe know (assuming you know anything about the trip)?

  • @MilesinTransit

    @MilesinTransit

    Жыл бұрын

    Thank you! So the bidding process doesn't get you cheaper base tickets, but rather cheaper ticket *upgrades* - I've found that it's kinda tough to rely on them as a guaranteed room upgrade, but I always like to put one in just in case I get lucky, like in this video! Here are some tips for it: -As far as I can tell, it only works for reservations involving one train, so for a trip like Milwaukee to Denver that involves two segments, you'd want to book the two legs separately to get the chance to bid up on the Zephyr. -I always put the bid in right after I buy the ticket...I have no idea if timing actually affects it, but it always "feels good" to do that. -It really is a toss-up if you'll get it, so if you don't feel like you'd be able to stomach traveling across the country in coach, you'd probably be best off just directly booking a roomette (for what it's worth, I find coach pretty comfortable, but I TOTALLY understand if that doesn't sound appealing). I've had cases where there are still *plenty* of rooms left on the train but Amtrak still didn't give me the bid! I guess if you *really* wanted a room, you could always book coach, wait to see if the bid gets accepted or not, and upgrade to a room with the regular fare if it doesn't, but that seems risky on the Zephyr... Those were some really unorganized thoughts, but hopefully that helps!

  • @scunekt

    @scunekt

    Жыл бұрын

    @@MilesinTransit Ah, hmm, goes to show how little I know about traveling via Amtrak and the bid system lol, that's not what I expected it to be like, what with it being a ticket upgrade rather than the ticket itself. Traveling in a room and having the extra privacy for what's supposed to be a 21+ hr train journey (one way) would be nice, but plain 'ol coach is fine by me too, I think. I hope. I haven't exactly put too much thought into this yet!-- since I don't know yet whenabouts I'd be making this trip. I don't remember Portage, WI -> Stanley, ND & back being too all that bad when I was younger, though. Ultimately, I think the cheapest way from around where I live to Denver would be via plane.. and it'd be a much shorter flight.. but riding the train just seems a lot more enjoyable to me; much less stressful, not having to deal with airports for the first time, more time to enjoy the scenery and all that.. I assume there's no real way to get cheaper coach tickets? In what little messing around I've done, I've figured out that Wednesdays are the cheapest days, and booking well in advance helps (though there becomes a point where it seems to just level out at the same price no matter how far out I plan), but that's all I've got. The cheapest I've been able to get it seems to be around $150 each way, $300 round-trip, and, I dunno much about Amtrak, but $300 is a lot of money (for me at least).

    Does the Detroit Lakes 'Washington Square Mall' count as Transit-oriented development then? Regardless, it looks nice and offers some indoor shopping experience which isn't walmart. Love seeing small places like that which actually aren't run down and depressing. Oh and also, proposing the term ''Amtraklle'' for the free apple.

    Hi Miles... Just to know if you're going to be recently in April close to the west coast of the US, so I can maybe meet you in one or part of your trip. I like your funny videos and I will be using the USA Rail pass starting in Las Vegas running all the West Coast from San Diego all the way up to Seattle Washington, stopping in Los Angeles Sacramento Napa Valley, Portland and ending in Chicago with the Empire Builder. My trip will start in April 20th of to May 8th. If by any chance you are traveling in any part of any of those cities I mentioned, I would like to meet you.

    You're joking about it but the car replacement bus happened to me. I went to New Carrolton to take a Bus 921 to Annapolis and a guy shows up and tells me and another woman waiting to follow him to his car. Hen then proceeded to explain that there were usually very few passengers, and since they're regulars (not me) he knew he could just drive a car instead of the bus to save money.

    If you're doing least visited Amtrak stations in each state, does this mean we will see Sanderson, Texas one day? That station looked like such a dump, when i once researched that station on street view. The original station house building was demolished there, a few years ago. I admire your dedication to getting to those less visited stations. The only Amtrak station in west Texas I'd have a linited interest to want to see, would be Alpine. Not sure if Del Rio would have anything interesting to do there, as i haven't researched this town as much as Alpine. And renting a car would probably be good to do there, since then i could get to Marfa and Big Bend National Park. I think there's also a Texas state park, not too far away. And if you're taking Sunset Limited ive heard the recommendation to be awake by Del Rio, since the train goes over Amistad Lake and Pecos River(both just west of the Del Rio station).

    @@MilesinTransitGood. Hope to see your video on Sanderson, one of these days. I recently looked up Benson, AZ(speaking of least ridden stations in various states), and that town seemed to have a little more going on than Sanderson. It even had a Safeway and a Walmart, to my surprise. Hadn't yet looked up Deming, NM(least ridden for NM), but I will soon. Also, Maurice's is a pretty well know regional women's clothing chain. I spotted at least 2 chains in that Detroit Lakes mall. Even the much deader mall in Marshall, Minnesota(per North CDogg22 and Doomie Grunt), has a Maurice's inside.

    @@MilesinTransit you're welcome. We regularly joke that it's easy to write a test to prove if you're from MN (if you say you are) - just list some random city names and see how many they get right. Wayzata, Edina, Cloquet, Faribault, Mahnomen, Bemidji, Ely and similar cities are among the common entries. Also, it's almost comically easy for us to tell when some new newscaster (on one of the Twin Cities stations) is a transplant vs a local, as they'll butcher one of those city names, or similar. :P You're all good... since MN has a mix of Ojibwe, Sioux, French, Anglo and more inspired place names, it's not easy. :P
