If you ever do something like this again, here's an idea to lessen the airplanes' advantage: give all the teams luggage, so the plane teams have to wait for their bags at the luggage carousel.

I’m a big fan of the legends, watching the juxtaposition between Jacklyn having a great time, excitedly planning out a route and doing food reviews, while the rest of her team looks like they are filled with pure contempt by the fact that they have to even be near public transit.

"Fastest game ever, huh?" The Yankees fan: 👁👄👁 I can smell the fumes from Back Bay through my screen. Miles realizing he could've grabbed his food at the gate after walking across the whole terminal is truly an EWR moment. Poor Symmetry having to deal with your shenanigans! With the PATH weekend route, waiting for your food, and the Grab the Sushi game, it's like the Port Authority had it all planned to troll you as much as possible! 😂Seriously though, that weekend schedule is such a joke. It's like they pretend the people of Hudson and Essex Counties don't even exist. I'm sure Jordan appreciates the PATH handing him the victory over Miles and enjoyed his victory meal at Five Guys Out of the three major NYC area airports, Newark is the oldest, opening in 1928. The City of Newark built the airport on 68 acres of marshland, and the Army Air Corps operated the facility during World War II. The airport's train station wouldn't open until October 2001. Unlike most train stations, the facility was designed with no direct pedestrian access, bus service, parking facility (there's parking by the station for United employees only), or drop-off area. So those who live by the station can't even use it!

The Sullivan Greyhound absolutely killed me. Last Thanksgiving break I took a terrible route from Boston to Stamford CT, which involved a Greyhound from Worcester to New Haven. We ended up in Waterbury instead of New Haven, and the driver was fully confident that we were at our destination--when we finally convinced him that this was in fact Waterbury, he *kept going west* until a passenger finally made him pull over and shouted directions to him. Good memories :D

Orange Line slow zones actually being useful for Team Keystone...wow. When all those Red Sox fans appeared on Jules's tram, all I hear is "Meep, meep, meep" like the anchovies from SpongeBob. Come to see who came in last place, stay for the roast session of Miles by Jordan! Jordan realizing his team beat Miles was definitely the greatest day of Jordan's life. And Meir's reaction about Greyhound not being last place was priceless (as priceless as his reaction to Aaron in Episode 3). Aaron was right, they weren't the ones to screw it up this time when Greyhound did it for them! Greyhound, Red Sox fans, MBTA, and the PATH all teamed up to give us the suspense. This whole race was so much fun to watch, thank you to all the teams, Jackson for the music, and Sam and you for editing, for making this what it is! The real race from Boston to NYC and back....were the friends we made along the way. Here's some Boston Common lore: It's on land formerly owned by William Blaxton from Lincolnshire. William decided to join the Ferdinando Gorges Expedition in 1623. The expedition of 1623 was considered a failure and while most of his fellow settlers returned home, he decided to live on the Shawmut Peninsula alone in 1625. Making him the first European to settle Boston. However, he didn't stay there as he didn't like leaders of the Boston church, so he decided to move south to what is now Cumberland, RI. Making him ALSO the first to settle Rhode Island in 1635

Oh, and hats off to Miles and whomever else had a hand in editing this. I can only imagine the amount of clips you had to sort through -- some cameras probably with slightly different "timecode" -- and you managed to produce what amounts to a movie-sized series. This is an INSANE feat for anyone! Also, to Jackson who created a bunch of different music numbers to really "jazz" up certain moments in the series. Music is so key to making something that is good -- so much more entertaining. Just tremendous stuff!

I feel like it's hard to make a completely accurate race since everyone left at the same time, but their departure times were all different. That being said, I think the plane you could get even faster with Clear and TSA precheck (so you can speed through security) and get to your gate a few minutes before boarding. I will agree that the Acela is the overall best bet, provided you can get a cheap enough ticket (it's not a great look when the train is more expensive than flying). I refuse to take a bus after an incident I had on MegaBus going to DC from NY (the air conditioning wouldn't turn off and the bus was about 50 degrees for 4 hours).

As the other reply states, usually Hoboken has its own service to 33rd Street on weekdays. But on weekends, it's combined with the Journal Square-33rd service. Only Newark-WTC service stays the same. As a former JC resident, as convenient as the PATH is on weekdays...it's a whole 'nother story on weekends. I preferred taking the NJT 123 bus into the city.

Well that was fun. Also makes me think about how crazy a race like this in Denmark from Copenhagen to Aarhus would be. That whole route between Denmarks 2 largest cities has so much variability. You have DSB on the rail network, SAS and DAT for air travel, and 3 different bus companies, Flixbus, Fleet, and Kombardo Express! All while Copenhagen has 1 super central airport, Aarhus has 2 that are both super far from the city. One northeast of the city on Djursland named Aarhus airport, and Billund airport way to the southwest. Both of them served by express airport buses that are basically coaches in their own right! And DSB and the train in general along with Flixbus and Fleet have to take a funky L shaped route due to the nations geography... except for Kombardo Express. They're owned by a ferry company and gets to use those free of charge and even let the Catamaran high speed ferries be used as sailing bus terminals to transfer between several corridors! Like that whole ordeal would be chaotic as heck since in that, it's basically anyone's game!... except if you take the Seaplane, the Seaplane is OP but also insanely expensive so that port to port richie shuttle doesn't count.

  • @MilesinTransit

MSP to Chicago and back could work for this kind of thing in the Midwest. Greyhound, Flix, and Megabus all stop at different points on both ends; the Empire Builder runs between them; Chicago has O'Hare and Midway airports to compete; and both ends have varied local transit options.

  • @bkark0935

    @bkark0935

Megabus no longer runs MSP - Chicago, and Flixbus has moved into the Greyhound station on both the Minneapolis and Chicago ends (although Flixbus does serve the Holiday on Rice St. in St. Paul instead of Union Depot.) Would be interesting to see once the second daily train starts (or really interesting if you want to have random Empire Builder delays.) I do think the route is a bit too long for the bus or rail to meaningfully compete against airlines in speed, though - even door-to-door 4 hours MSP - Chicago is pretty doable by air, where rail and bus would be 8+ hours. Out of Chicago, I'd say competing to St. Louis or Detroit would be quite interesting. Out of MSP, there aren't any super-interesting options where all three run - Milwaukee's still too far to be super-competitive, and the other options either don't have one of the three options at all or one of them is terribly timed (MSP - Fargo is middle-of-the-night for Amtrak.)

One has really to "acknowledge" how some people can spread negativity in whatever situation they are. Maybe except for laughing about other's mishaps. What a clown. Your team on the contrary enjoyed the situation you had maneuvered yourself into with a lot of humour. From the approach to the task, and time rankings away I'd declare TUUHRL my personal winner. Not only did they make the best average on both directions, which is partly a lucky game. But I enjoy Nathan, who was definitely the leader in transit terms here, for being expert enough to know some useful background without actually thinking he is so smart he can beat the system. I feel with you, Miles - I am probably about twice your age, which makes me with the usual start into it aged 10, three times as long a transit nerd, and I still manage to occasionally cheat myself into trouble now.

What a fun series! Yall's joy is infectious, it makes me really want to lasso together two dozen friends and attempt something like this. (The musical interlude in chapter 3 is an absolute joy, I just went back to watch it again) Again, awesome production, I'm glad that you all had such a great time. Tell your friends they have cool hair and even cooler lives :D (PS, is there a discord server where any of you are active? I'm looking to join some transit communities)

I’ve done both the regional and Acela between NY and Back Bay, and I honestly prefer the regional. The Acela business class is too bright for a daylight train, and it had a weird vibration that made it hard to get comfortable. (Note I have not yet been on the new Acela trains, but I hope they solved these issues.)

Fantastic series and so much better than the big race on the BBC. Edge of the seat, very funny and celebrating all modes of transport. If you ever think to do anything as crazy again you have my vote.

That was a lot of fun! I've been binging your videos recently and this was one of the best so far. I wish you'd have included a car in the race, I've driven that route and I think I could beat your scores.

Thank you! The problem with adding a car is that it would totally skew the race - a driver can leave immediately but everyone else has to wait for their departure time!

The Northeast Regional and Acela also connects to the commuter rail @ Providence and the orange line also connects @ Ruggles, Megabus also stops @ Riverside, which is closer to Auburndale, Union Square is on the 4, 5 or 6 to Grand Central which connects to the Metro North to New Haven, which connects to the Shore Line East to New London, since this was before Grand Central Madison opened, since this was also in the summer ferry service from orient point to New London was in service and you could have also done Tailwinds Air which goes to Fan Pier from New York Skyport's Seaplane base, there is also a bus to EWR from Port Authority as well as Newark's Penn Station, the airporter goes to LGA and JFK,

It would be funny to see how miles would do in Jet lag: the game. Very entertaining series!!! Here in eastern Iowa, it’s sometimes cheaper for flights to take a Burlington trailways to Chicago then take the Blue line to ohare or orange to Midway, vs fly our local 13 terminal airport CID. Usually saves 100+$ even with the now 130$ RT bus fare except certain destinations, but especially for international flights it can be a good option. Wild stuff goes on in busses

Never trust Greyhound lol. Coming to Worcester, the driver bypassed the exit on 290 and we ended up in Shrewsbury. She didn't even realize we left Worcester. Greyhound to this day, still can't figure out how to enter Union Station Worcester the right way.

Funny thing.. travel by train in the mid 19th Century between Boston and NYC was definitely competitive in terms of time. Generally, modern public transpo does not have a temporal design. If it did, Boston to NYC would be around 3 hours. Faster than an SOV

To the team that finished the race at 10:10 should also get an award (fictitious or otherwise): 1010 WINS (actual New York radio station [all-news at 1010 AM {and now also at 92.3 FM}, also a famous recent newspaper headline]; whether they win or not, that team WINS).

United Airlines absolutely does suck. On Monday, they tried to strand me in Sao Paulo. They ran me all over the Sao Paulo airport, trying to find out what was going on. After over 2 hours of getting the runaround, I finally got a straight answer. My plane was canceled. So they put me on an American flight to New York with a connection to Washington. I was supposed to have a direct flight to Washington. I had a super tight connection in JFK. Spending 2 extra hours on the plane just to run across JFK and get on yet another plane to get back to where I was supposed to go in the first place was super annoying. Somehow, I cleared customs and got on my plane just in time. The plane spent more time circling Ragan airport than it took to get from New York to DC. I was 4 hours late getting into DC, and I missed my bus home. I had to get another bus to a nearby city and spend two hours riding local buses to get home. By the time I got to my home town the city bus had stopped for the day so I had to walk 3 kilometers to finally get home. Good work United Airlines. It really pays to know your local transit system even if it absolutely sucks. You never know when it might be the key to getting out of a jam.

Until Acela and BOS-NHV electrification changed the landscape, there was a departure between Boston and LaGuardia every half hour. Even Continental had service between Boston and Newark almost every hour. JFK was about the same as it is now, but was not as attractive before jetBlue started up and the AirTrainJFK opened. Buses left frequently but there were two bus stations in Boston, PABT in NYC and curbside service to other locations wasn’t really a thing.
