Grammar Study For Immersion Learners

Grammar Study For Immersion Learners
Whether you are learning Japanese, Chinese, German, Spanish, French or any other language, grammar is always a hot topic in the Immersion Community. As input focused learners how should we go about studying grammar? Should we leave everything to our input, or is grammar study beneficial? And if it is beneficial, how much of it should we do? Just the basics or everything including the linguistic terms and exact rules?
In this video, we go over our thoughts on this topic. Furthermore, we also present a new project that is in the works, that will make your grammar study easier than ever.

Having such decks would be so extremely helpful to kickstart the immersion learning process. That's so crucial since the beginning is almost always the hardest part. Your work is so undervalued as of yet, but please keep going!

I'll stick what I'm doing, Tae Kim's guide. I'm working through, just making sure I understand what being presented and making shortened notes along with breaking every example down so I know what each part does (even though Kim's guide decides not to tell you certain parts used in examples are and needed some lookups). Also making a few vocab cards where I feel necessary. The break down of sentences and looking up things instead of memorising tables works as an analogue for what srs cards do. So anything that is memorised on my part is a bonus. So when I move onto sentence mining I'm in a better position compared to the harder climb of finishing with everything fully memorised. I'm very close to finishing the guide and I have found myself being able to figure out quite a few sentences I come across with out knowing all the vocabulary. Compared the the Zero I started at before the guide.

I also learned from Tae Kim's Grammar guide (the 2012 PDF version) and it's really good given the fact that it's completely free but I really would have liked audio for the example sentences. That's why I'm happy for the people who are gonna be able to make use of these new premade Migaku decks that were announced.

I'm excited to see the new grammar deck! I've been studying for about 9 months, so I can probably breeze through most of the new vocab and really focus on the grammar. My daughters want to learn Japanese too, so hopefully this will make a good starter (or supplemental) deck.

How would someone who has lots of vocabulary under their belt but low grammar study use this deck? It seems that the grammar points are intermingled with the vocabulary. Is there a way to filter through the 2000 common words and get right into the grammars?

I did a bit of tae Kim but got sick of it after 50 pages or so. I could never remember いる vs ある. "Which one was for inanimate objects again"? Honestly the tango books taught me more about grammar than any of that. Ide see it enough, and it would just.. Work.. there's loads of grammar know, but I don't know how I know it 😅. And I couldn't explain it beyond just giving an example. Its the same in native language, so it works I suppose 🤷🏻‍♂️
