I completely agree with the idea that you get more out of listening when you have nothing to look at to distact you. I've had times where I've been watching a TV show, gotten up to do something quickly, and instantly realised that I was understanding more of the words I was hearing than when I was watching the show.

Im hyped to see what your guys idea on passive immersion is!!

2:00 I definitely feel like I have made maybe the most gains in my listening ability during the time where I have listened to stuff on my ipod while walking my dog. At least, this is the time where I really notice being able to pick up on and understand things I wasn't able to while watching the material on my computer.

Same. I always walked back from my part time job in the evening. Took me about an hour. I understood like twice as much, as compared to sitting at home. At least it felt like twice as much.

Same here!! I mean SAME HERE! It seems impossible to understand the content better when your walking than when you are using your computer and watching the episoded

Thank you for addressing this topic. I rejoiced at your declaration that "passive immersion is dead". It's an illusory concept that is ripe for debunking. Firstly, there is no "active" or "passive" immersion. There is simply immersion - the condition of being immersed. Secondly, the input that contributes to language acquisition during immersion comes in two forms: listening and reading. Both of these are activities. They are active. They are things you do, not things that are done to you. Hence there are no such things as "passive listening" or "passive reading". If listening is fragmentary and intermittent because the listener's attention is being distracted by other stimuli, this is not "passive immersion/listening". It is fragmented active listening (or low-focus listening, to use your terminology). I hope this video contributes to the elimination of "passive" as a descriptor of language learning activities that are anything but passive. Thanks again for your work.

That's exactly why I wanted to make this video. And that's why I think that thinking of all listening you do as somewhere on a spectrum is the best visualization. The difference between "playing an FPS" and "sitting still while watching" is that with the latter a higher % of every hour spent will be spent with focus on the language and not with your mind wandering.

Maybe I misunderstood you comment. But the word passive is used to be opposite as full active. You're listening but you're not 100% active in term of attention. In your comment you seemed to use the word passive like the in the word "passive tense". But yes, passive listening is a bad choice of words

I think Migaku could use a beginner's guide. I feel like there are a lot of powerful tools, but watching so many 10+ minute videos that are written like an essay has me lost and unsure of where to start. So far I've only adopted Anki and listening to target language

I'm trying to make my learning as efficient as possible and I would like to move on to sentence cards and such, but I'm intimidated by the tutorials and I also am a mobile heavy user despite having a PC

@@FlowUrbanFlow i suggest heading over to the various language learning discords that originated from MIA. I got all my questions answered there, plus they have a couple programmers if you need help with more complex issues

does anyone else find their focus is stronger when walking alone in empty areas as opposed to streets with people on? even though i've got my headphones and am not interacting with any of them, my focus still seems a little weaker

Yeah, same. Thats why I added the "in the evening". Because there are no people around. If there is something moving around you, its easier to get distracted.

Does the extension work with a chromebook and then using it with Ankidroid (the android app version of anki)?

Any plans to update all the documentation on the Migaku website? It's very confusing because it's outdated right now.

I know this video is old, but where does the condensed audio export to? I can't find any sort of directory settings.

I usually break it down into background (it's present, but you're ignoring it at the time), passive (you're paying attention to it, but depend only on your current level of comprehension), and active (you look up unknown parts like with Migaku's pop-up dictionary). Background becomes passive when you pay attention to it. Passive is more effective the more comprehensible it is (either it's at your level, or you made effort to turn it comprehensible such as through sentence mining). Active is tiring due to it being akin to studying and may ruin the flow of the story but helps keep the overall story comprehensible. Beyond that, there's active study of the material which can be sentence mining, analyzing how people speak, finding out the cultural references, etc. A simple tactic then would be to actively watch a show, record the compressed audio with Migaku, and put that in a background immersion audio loop (w/ other shows you've watched/ripped) playing all the time. A more advanced tactic would be to do this but only with shows that are at 95% or higher in "reading" comprehensibility (likely due to you studying vocab/sentences of the show in Anki). This means that background audio becomes near 100% comprehensible passive input anytime of the day you pay attention.

Ide love a migaku vid on "free-flow" immersion vs a slower immersion with more lookups and pauses. I imagine the slower stuff has more potential to be "high focus", and free-flow could be a more medium focus; at least in my experience. There's also a middle ground I guess too. I've seen a lot of talk on this in community lately, and Stevie mentioned that he wished he did more of a slower immersion with lookups and pauses in his "what would I change" video.

Where does it export the condensed audio on default? for some reason it doesnt show in my dictionary settings on anki. It should be exporting because it goes from 0-100 in a few minutes then says its done but i cant find it anywhere

Funny, but I've always distinguished active and passive immersion by amount of focus you give to these. Have no idea where does it fits. But I've noticed that I can focus much more on stuff I'm listening when doing activities which don't require "Speech center of the brain". Like when working in Blender, or GIMP or other this kind of stuff. Or some home routine. Actually, I found that it's a good idea to listen to something on the background. It just helps with "the boring stuff". And actually, looks like the only way for me to listen podcasts and stuff. While activity requires usage of "Speech". Stuff like programming, writing something, or reading. It's almost impossible to listen to anything on the background. And it sometimes/often starts to interfere with the activity. On some degree it's a question of learning to focus on your activity. But there you get really weak focus on the material.

Yeah same here. I always just thought of it as high, mid, or low focus immersion. There's so many factors that come into play, I think changing the terminology can do some good

Rather than discarding the idea of active vs. passive immersion and introducing new verbiage, wouldn't it make more sense to re-evaluate active and passive immersion, and acknowledge that it is entirely possible to achieve active immersion while walking?

The idea of immersion being active only when you’re not doing anything was a strange way to describe immersion to begin with. We prefer to talk about it in a way that is more accurate from a scientific perspective. Secondary activities can enhance focus or detract from it which will effect how much time you can focus on your immersion material while engaging with it.

Awesome feature. I always did this same thing but by downloading the subs2srs file, getting the audio, combining it with the tool yoga made, then splitting it up ahah

Look, passive immersion works, I noticed when I went on a bender in my TL and listened passively for 5 hours straight, I noticed even after that little session that I was understanding the things I was watching so much more it was insane, I could actually kind of tell what was going on, so to anyone that does passive immersion just know that it's great to do when you aren't going to do active immersion, But it must be paired with it, Think of adding muscle and then refining it, adding muscle being active immersion, Refining is passive immersion, and I think that their take on it is to hard to put into words, you don't need to reinvent the wheel guys.

Very interested to see this. I never liked passive immersion anyway, so I'll be interested to see what you guys have to say. I'm skeptical that it's meaningless, but maybe this video isn't even about passive immersion not being good! We'll see, looking forward to it

omg my heart stopped.i was expecting smth such as passive is useless but than god it just the term is vague .

I get my best immersion done while in the bathtub tbh, and chewing gum has always helped me, even in college etc.

I developed the ability to hear actual words (rather than everything sounding like gibberish) before I actually had any time to actively immerse with any regularity
