I would just like to say, I have been on the Vanderwaal adventure since September, or October of last year, yes I was late. I do not like cell phone recordings as you lose a lot of the quality in them, but I must say, this video was above and beyond acceptable. This jumped straight to the top as one of the greatest performances ever....and her voice, get out of here, are you kidding me?? Adele, a grown ass woman, an adult, a professional singer, a titan in the industry, a superstar, got outsang by a 12 year old girl......

There are voices that are so pure, and are so easy on the ears. But in no time, they all begin to bore me. Then there are those voices that aren’t pure, that have so many nuances to them, from being rough all the way to being pure and I just can’t hear them enough. I need to hear Grace.

Grace does incredible covers of songs, and like several of her own incredible songs they are set aside and on she goes. At my age it is unlikely I will get to see her for many more years, but how wonderful I did. Grace you are without equal, as a songwriter and a singer.

I know some people don't appreciate her voice. I respect the fact that everyone has a right to their own opinion. But, it still amazes me when I hear someone say "she can't sing". I often wonder if they are truly being honest. Sometimes, it seems like they have been convinced to think that a good singing voice has to be clean and classical. I feel like the breaks and her beautiful raspy tone, conveys emotion better than any classical pure singer. IMO songs are like little stories. And the best story teller/singer, I've ever heard is, Grace Vanderwaal.(and Roger Waters).

I took orchestration 101 like 30 years ago. The professor discussed choosing instruments in terms of the "color" of the sound each instrument produced. I was a visual arts major at the time, so I got right into that idea. The prof used terms I'd heard many times in art class: color, warmth, coolness, vibrancy, even the color itself: yellow, gold, red, blue - Pavarotti's voice being like a truly golden sun, burnished and warm, but with the tactile feel of soft metal. Grace's voice has so many colors she mixes so adroitly, freely, while others have just a few beautiful colors in their tone. It's like the difference between the best poster you've ever seen and an impressionist painting. There's no explaining it. Voice's like Grace's should only come after years of practice, performance and life-experience. She is truly a miracle.

Somebody said since the beetles. I am a huge Radiohead fan and I would have to put Grace right up there with Thom Yorke. The best part is she has only begun. Yup, even the few hairs I still have on my head raise up! I was fortunate enough to experience what Grace does to me up close and personal from the pit on her Evolve Tour with ID last Summer. She concluded her set with a stirring performance of 'Clearly' and walked to my side of the stage as she reached her powerful crescendo during "I accept all things that I cannot change" which caused an unbelievable rush of chills to overwhelm me. You hear me loud and clear in the video sorta go "woOOOOOoo" which was my reaction to that surprising rush. I have no doubt that had I been in the above crowd at LV, I would have had a similar episode....perhaps several!

To be honest, at 1st, i couldn't believe my ears. But i heard it right: G's cover was better, much better. it seems impossible. She's 12, but i got the feeling she was the one who had experienced the unrequited love A's talking about in her song! And that she was reliving it!! A's version is so much blander. Her voice more average. Almost boring (?!?). Worse: i read the lyrics. They r at best mediocre. Compare m with G's "12 stars". Poor Adele.....

I lived in Kansas for 30+ years, about 20 miles from Lenexa, where the VanderWaal family lived at the time Grace was born. Lenexa is a suberb of Kansas City, Kansas, and Kansas City, Missouri. Not much country there. Maybe if they'd moved to Wichita instead of to New York state..... And to tell you the truth, Kansas City's reputation as a jazz/R&B hub is pretty much just a historical fact. It's no longer the city of musical fame and fable it once was. If there is a jazz/R&B equivalent of Nashville, Kansas City isn't it.

Oh, most of Kansas is actually like that, except we're about 100 years later. It's all farms and small towns, except for Wichita, which is one strange City/big town. Because of Boeing and Cessna, it used to be a real hub of aircraft manufacture, but that's history, too. It was lots of money mixed with engineering types and cowboys. The Kansas City area just isn't, and that includes Lenexa, During my 30+ years there, I never saw a tornado. I did spend a total of about 5 hours in a storm shelter during tornado warnings, but the things touched town at least 20 miles away. The closest I've come to being in a tornado is in North Carolina - a small twister ransacked some houses about 3 miles from us. And just the other night, a tornado hit Greensboro, NC, about 50 miles away, and did some considerable damage. It's just nothing like the F5 tornadoes in the American midwest, monster storms with tornadoes 1.5 miles wide on the ground for an hour or more. Those do hundreds of millions in damage and usually kill scores of people. I have seen a fair number of wall-clouds, which are tall, dark cloud structures built by updrafts and shearing winds reaching up thousands of feet into the sky. Those are scary. In turbulent weather like that, you can get lots of clouds being thrown around by strong winds opening up huge holes to the sky, so the sun steaks in and reflects off all the greenery, then gets diffused into the atmosphere, so that the sky literally turns green. When that happens, it's usually a very good idea to head for the storm shelters. Tornadoes drop out of wall clouds, because they are created by the same shearing winds and updrafts, and the shearing also opens the sky up to sunlight. But with all that, I never got to less than 20 miles of a tornado, and there are hundreds of them every year in Kansas. What fun, living in America.

Well, that's a tough question to answer. Kansas is going through and has been going through something that started in the 1930's stopped for a while, then started up again in the 1980's - the death of the family farm. Many small towns have either died or are dying, as large farms take over agriculture in the state. A lot of that has to do with automation, just like everything else. A single person can now do what took 3-4 or more people to do 50 years ago. The urban population centers continue to grow. But overall, the taste for music in Kansas is more country than anything else, except around bigger cities and towns. Still plenty of cowboys and farmers there, just not nearly as many as there used to be. The exceptions are around college towns and some large towns.

Seems impossible a 12 year old could deliver this passion. But it's clear Grace is an empath of the first order. Just as impossible: Six months prior, Grace's only experience was at a coffee shop open-mike. I wonder if this delights or scares Adele and the other artists she covers? At the time of this comment, she's covered quite a few, and bettered the performance of most. Let's be honest; her voice was imperfect for the first minute, until that great ripping growl. But her unique sound and abilities overall are astonishing. Alas, I think her vocal coach moved her away from those great ripping growls - probably very wise for her young voice, such a precious resource. But I would love to hear more of it now she's 15.
