my only regret is that many of her mainstream audience will fail to understand this genious. Most of her songs, melodies and lyrics are too deep for the average listener. Maybe in the future we'll realize the awesome musical phenomenon in our midst.

mahlergaudi Grace's music can pierce hearts, touch souls, and take people on a magical journey outside their "box" even without them understanding the deeper parts of her songs. One aspect of her genius is that her songs can connect with and give to listeners on multiple levels, with or without them consciously recognizing her specific astute and mature observations, her philosophy of and values in life, and her inexplicably sharp wisdom at just 13 years old. She is one in a billion. A judge on America's Got Talent, Heidi Klum, told Grace "You are a true Gift to Music". That's an astounding compliment. I'd add that Grace is a true Gift to her Listeners, regardless of how deeply any of them understand it all. We feel moved and in a positive direction, regardless. So many comments reflect this. Therr are websites with communities that seem to despise Grace and her music. I pity their estrangement from their humanity, and their disconnect with their own feelings.

Unconscious perception. Yes. Thence the myriad responses a bit puzzled as to why we feel attracted over and over again to her music. At least It hadn´t happened to me before. I´m 69, writing from Lima, Peru. She´s incomparable in that we can´t compare her to other artists. Not that they may be better or not, but that the patterns needed are different. She is unwittingly creating a different norm. Let´s just enjoy this precocious genius ´s experience, and see where this ride is taking us...

I got the Target CD and when I first heard this song I was just listening to another amazing song. Then I literally froze and just stared as the depth of the words hit me. "We are just trying to be young but little do we know that trying to be young is what is making us grow old" her emotion and in depth lyrics always leaves me floored.

People, Grace steers the ship through the ice, she keeps the course - never known twice. Buy anemones ! three wishes a bunch, then breathe, a suffused wish will be your hunch. From the highest trapeze in this circus tent, she leaps through the flaming hoop of the world bent, she puts herself in the hand of god, near and far, sends us music, lyrics ... the evening star. ideas from Ingeborg Bachmann, Die blaue Stunde

Grace does not say it here but as a senior "winter is filling my lungs". The best advise I can give is to just turn up the speakers, turn down the lights and as Grace says "listen to the breath" of her voice. The words will come in time but in the meantime enjoy the incredible voice and sound so remarkably conveyed here in this "song". You even have an opportunity to share it with someone who will likely treasure it as much as you do. It is a gift for all seasons:-)

The LostBullet, You're not alone. Actually rivers of tears have been shed from these eyes ever since day one, her audition. In fact I must have watched that at least a hundred times by now and STILL!!! I've never experienced anything like it before from any other musician, although I wouldn't exactly call it crying like when you're sad. Sometimes the tear ducts just open like a faucet before she even finishes the first line of a song! Sometimes I have to shut off her songs in the middle cuz it's just sooo friggen GOOD I can't stand it! Then with floods of tears flowing I'll be laughing my ass off like some kind of lunatic from the sheer magnitude of astonishment of what's coming out of this 13 year old prodigy. The complexity of her voice and ability to project pure unbridled emotion would be enough all by its self, but then I remind myself that SHE WROTE the songs too! Top that all off with a highly intelligent yet totally modest, humble and grounded personality. It's like her voice pierces my heart like a laser, and the tears are tears of healing. It's like she IS quite literally Grace shining a ray of light into this world. God knew we could use a little reminder.....

Every time I watch this series of pictures of Grace, one really stands out to me. It's the people in the crowd. There is an older man with glasses looking at the people beside him and the look on his face says that he is enjoying the music yet at the same time he seems concerned about the young age of the fans. There is a younger guy totally fixated on Grace, the young girls in the front along with a few older ladies, maybe their moms. Grace is for everyone.

Google German to English translation: I've never seen such professionalism at that age. Then she writes her songs with accompaniments of the instruments themselves. She moves on stage like a pro, but not exaggerated, always a little discreetly withheld. I am fascinated by her smile, her joy and her simplicity. Hopefully the carnivore cage music industry will not break them in the years.

This song needs to break out into the big wide open. It can't just be confined on a Target bonus 2 album. That would be a travesty of music. This song is a wonderful piece of beautiful music by a 13 year old wonder of nature. It needs to be brought out for everyone to hear. Who is with me on this? Same is true of 'Hope for Change'. I'm gonna say the same thing over there too. See you there :).

Great comparison, although Grace's music is more diverse/eclectic from the start. Her new/first album, Just the Beginning, integrates elements of pop, Folk, Punk, Caribbean, Rock, Rockabilly, Rap, Latin, Soul, Blues, Psychedelia, and Grunge! How Grace can create, record, and perform such an unusually diverse and sophisticated album full of her own song art is astounding. *That her music is very impressive and very relatable and very enjoyable and very moving and very catchy and very comfortable and unforgettable is a historically rare accomplishment. *That she created the album's tracks during her first year as a recording artist, starting when she was still 12 years, old leaves me speechless. *That not just her art, but Grace herself, as a person, is so wise, admired, respected, and cherished by millions of her fans across every age group around the world, and at all levels of the music industry, is beyond incredible. *That Grace is a down-to-earth kid in middle school that enjoys the following activities: * Creates, performs, records, designs, and directs stage sets and lighting for her song art, starting last year while she was 12 years old on the AGT competition, and now for her professional music and videos at 13 years old. * Gives completely sold out solo concerts touring across the US and in Japan (twice), starring in venues (including Los Vegas), and at festivals (including Austin City Limits). *Appears and performs at countless promotional appearances on live and recorded television, award shows, education videos, radio shows, celebrity talk shows, entertainment interviews, sports and charity events, and merchandise signings. * Has become a professional model represented by a top worldwide agency. *Licences and assists with adaptation of some of her songs for commercial and public service advertising. *Designs and promoted a small line of fashion clothing and accessories for kids. *Started and runs her own charitable foundation that helps fund and donates instruments to underfunded school music programs. *Is spokesperson for the world famous Fender company's line of ukuleles, (and designed her own signature ukulele product being produced by Fender and sold worldwide). * Accepts awards and recognition from prestigious organizations, including Teen Choice, Disney Radio, and Billboard. She's also included on multiple "Top" lists. * Joined an international education outreach organization as a motivational spokesperson and role model for young women around the world. So, in summary, Grace is a talented 13 year old middle school student who does a bunch of cool stuff, makes many people happier, and blows many minds along the way.

April Cook I love Grace since before she won AGT. In fact, I was listening to her CD in my car today as well as yesterday. I can't get enough of it. Grace has the highest Likes and most positive comments on KZread. More LIKES than popular artists. But what disappoints me, is she's still unknown. I believe its her youth that may be the problem. People are reluctant to purchase music from a 12 or 13 year old. But when people give her a second look, they realize it's not just her music. ..it's her infectious personality! She is not only destined to be a great music artist, but also a role model

Beautiful thing, clay and light the sky.how in the world could she come close to that.then came the other songs darkness keeps chasing me, LUNGS MOON LIGHT , ABETTER LIFE. Clearly .star girl and its soundtrack is gonig to be very good.i just have a vdery good feeling about that.the best is yet to come.have a beautiful day.

Grace is an Archer Her Music, the Bow Her Words are the Arrows Piercing My Soul The call of Sirens In her voice I must hear her It's not a choice My soul twists Tears fill my eyes I fall to my knees I cannot rise This power she wields I must know She just shakes me How is this so? And oh, her beauty A beauty so rare A luminous beauty A star in flare Yet it is me Me who is blessed Hearing a choir of angels Echoing in my chest She is a gift to us Though I don't know from who But I've never been more sure A gift for us, True. Thank you for sharing this video. Jeepers Forken Christmas! I'm speechless and near tears. This song is incredibly Beautiful and Stunning. The lyrics are very well written, mature and astute. Her score for her lyrics, and her performance of the two combined is very sophisticated, yet also natural, and relatable. The song has a solid structure, a very rich texture, and is polished smooth. However, the song also has a free flowing, even spontaneous, feeling to it. Her pacing, technique, and emotional expression are exquisite. The song reminds me of her deeply impressive ballads she performed during AGT, only this is more amazing, confident and breathtaking. It's all together a remarkable, and seriously awe inspiring artistic achievement for a very young woman---a thirteen year old who is new to the professional music business, and at just the start of her life's journey! With such an astonishingly creative and prolific start to her career, I can't fathom to what heights she and her art will continue to grow and evolve to. In summary, "Lungs" and her performance of it are staggeringly good and ridiculously advanced. Last year we met this adorable talented kid wearing bright yellow pants. Now she's becoming a goddess of song, beloved by fans around the world. We are so fortunate to have her art, energy, and wit in our lives. Fans at her sold-out concerts will be in heaven with this.

Only at Target? This is really a pity, a wonderful song perfectly interpreted by Grace Vanderwaal with her unique voice. It is amazing what this 13-year-old girl has in mind for moving thoughts and transforms them into beautiful songs. Grace VW is not just an extraordinary singer and Songwriter, but also very intelligent. I hope that we will not get lost because of the somewhat short thought business with Target this beautiful song. I wish Grace VW. Continued success and a positive development in every respect. Greetings from Germany :)

Erwin Lustig Excellent points. This song and her performance of it is, more than her other songs, a critical accomplishment and milestone for her. Lungs demonstrates that Grace has firmly reached a new maturity and a new level of expertise. Being a teenager is typically a person's first very serious, difficult, stressful and intense part of there life. One is taking in so many new experiences and facing so many personal challenges. This period is often somber and edgy. It's the period Grace has begun to travel through, and this song perfectly captures the feeling of it. Lungs is seems refined, perfect, well balanced, and tight. Her performance of it is stripped back, simple and more subdued than most of her other songs. However, it's also a very powerful song that she sings with delicate restraint. I'm not sure if this song's genre is Pop, like her other songs so far.. To me, Lungs has a Soft Rock quality to it. It might belong to either the subcategory of Indie Rock or Alternative Rock? Regardless, this song is too special and important to be buried in a bonus track of a version of the album even most Americans will not be have. Like you say, this seems to have happened because there was a quick upfront way to get cash. And as you say, it's a very shortsighted, and I'll add, a very foolish decision at this early crucial time for Grace.

I don't think it was Grace who decided on what the two bonus tracks for the Target version would be; she's definitely not short-sighted nor greedy. It was probably a deal done by Columbia (who has distribution rights to her songs) and Target.

Matt you are right. In many of Grace's interviews she mentioned that she is not the one driving her life right now. She is 13. Outside of her music, and the things she personally wants to do such as her tree house and her Little Miracle Foundation, all her appearances, performances and even her tour, the timing of her trip to Japan, the timing of the release of her singles and debut album, these decisions are made by probably: her parents, her manager and the label. Even what songs goes into her album is not her decision entirely (she talks in several KZread videos when she was performing, of being unsure if the new songs she sang such as Burned and Just a Crush, will go into the album).

Quah Choon Huat Grace's songwriting output exceeds the capacity of her record company to commercially consume it. It is extraordinary. Putting the bonus tracks on Target edition as was done with perfectly imperfect EP with Walmart ensures major retailer attention for an upcoming artist so gaining sales that may never have otherwise happened and for some of us superfans means we buy both editions. All that means a better chance Grace will be able to make more music in the studio into the future. Win win all around.

  • @QuahChoonHuat

Hypermarlin I get you I was just agreeing with and reinforcing what Matt commented about Grace not the one making the decision to have the bonus tracks available solely to Target. I am sure the Syco Music and Simon Cowe knew full well what a winner they have managed to get in signing Grace to their label. In one interview (ET Canada) Grace mentioned that she was offered a record deal right off on winning AGT, on the very night immediately after her win. Who knows maybe soon they may release these two tracks as singles and/or placed them in her next album (hopefully).

Dearest Ford Perfect, Firstly, the comments that I am referring to were made by Michael when he was a teenager. Secondly, it is clear from your comment that you are a victim of a declining education system that has led you to rely on tabloid journalism for your source material. Until you have first hand, empirical knowledge of the facts, you can not truly pass judgement or know anything with certainty. Paying better attention in logic class or any course on the legal system would have been a benefit to forming any future opinions that you may post. (You can thank me below) Michael was an artist who was on the cutting edge. His peers include the likes of Prince, Madonna, Lady GaGa, and David Bowie.
