such a strong middle/low. I was sad she switched to soprano roles. Many of her high notes fly upward- she sang sharp on many of the highest notes as a soprano. Always an amazing artist,. The low/middle- so rich and strong. Not swallowed like some mezzos- One of my all time favorite voices...

The thing about her in the role is how she becomes a woman from another era and place. I have seen carmen's who are far too contemporary. She transcends. It fascinating to watch

When i think Carmen I see Crace Bumbry. For me she is just the Carmen. Beautiful.

(I know some people will abhor what I'm about to say, but I don't really care) What I find most fascinating is in Bumbry's Carmen is how you can tell there's a soprano in there waiting to get out. Not to say she wasn't a brilliant mezzo - she was; she "out-mezzoed" every other mezzo I've heard - but there's a brilliance, an ease, a lightness to her sound, especially the top notes, that predicts this Carmen would, in later years, become a Tosca. Of course, hindsight is 20/20.

She was never a real soprano. She was always a mezzo. Began and ended her career as one, and was much better in those roles.

Your "fact" has been disproved by an amazing career and by the quality of the voice as it entered its, 6th, 7th and even 8th decade - no mezzo singing Turandots, Normas, Toscas, Abigailles, Lady Macbeths, Aidas and the like could possibly have ended with a voice as fresh as hers did, because if you are singing outside of your register for years and years and years on end - on major roles - then it takes a toll on your voice. The very fact that she ended with a voice as fresh as it was when she started proves my "opinion" and invites you to rethink your "facts". EDIT - I know that Bumbry being a Mezzo or a Soprano is a point of contention, so as I said I don't really care that some people agree or disagree; everyone's entitled to their opinion. and it's not worth anyone's time to bicker over something like this, especially when, when it comes down to it, she was an excellent singer. What drives me absolutely up the wall is the arrogant contention that my opinion is worthless and that you are swooping in with a well-proved fact to reduce my opinion to shambles. Well, I've got news for you: your "fact" is in fact your "opinion", because there is no way to factually prove that she was not a Soprano (in fact, as evidenced by her legacy of recordings, there is ample evidence she was). You may OPINE that she was better as a mezzo than she ever was as a soprano, and point to recordings of sopranos that you think are better in certain roles, but that is the full extent of your possibly-provable OPINION. That is where your "fact" stops, as well as mine and every other fan's. EDIT 2 - On second thought, considering the ample evidence, she was obviously both a mezzo and a soprano - a "Falcon", which is a problematic classification named after a soprano who ended very prematurely but which seems to fit Grace Bumbry well. Or a Dramatic Soprano. Considering she sang Alto, Mezzo and Soprano roles with tremendous high quality, maybe the best classification is "assoluta", though I'm sure hearing-impaired arrogant people like yourself will cringe at this.

Recientemente (2004) se ha lanzado una edicion en conmemoracion a esta insigne cantante por la misma disuera conteniendo los "masters originales" de sus grabaciones en 3 CD en los que canta Gluck,Mascagni,Bizet,Gounod, Sains Saenz ,Tchaikosky, Falla,Wagner, Brhams, Schubert, Liszt,Wolf (todo su extenso repertorio y de primera calidad).

I know that. I've sung Carmen before. I was responding to a comment above mine. She in my opinion was a Mezzo, but the point is she did do soprano roles and refused to be called either at one point.

Agreed, except she was signed as a Mezzo at the time, but I totally agree otherwise. Then we didn't know what she was after Aida. But I love Grace the Mezzo. LOL! I come to hear opera singers sing, not do a dance. In most stagings, Carmen isn't dancing. Dancers are.

Yes, but the character she is portraying is supposed to dance, and, being the main character, Carmen is supposed to be in the centre of attention. And I am not saying it is her fault she is not dancing, it has to do with the production. I meant to praise her, not to criticize her! :)
