As of May 7, 2023, this has become even more treasured archival footage. She was simply phenomenal. She truly loved her art, and she loved encouraging emerging young artists. Rest Easy, Grace Melzia Bumbry.

@@christopheryoung5032I'm glad to know she is in Maryland. She used to be seen often in Greenwich Village where she resided for many years.
Someone should do a full scale documentary. And a biography. Extraordinary woman… extraordinary career! Thank you for this, it’s wonderful!
What a lady! I thought we were going to enjoy her physical presence between us some longer, but we can still enjoy all these documents of her high art. Honour to Grace Bumbry!
I was blessed to hear Madame Bumbry many times at the Metropolitan Opera. I also heard her legendary concert at Carnegie Hall with Shirley Verrett. I loved her very much in Salome. She is a great artist of the highest caliber.
First Melba Moore who I knew a lot about and now I’m discovering Grace Bumbry for the first time. I love this channel
Wait a minute! Ms. Bumbry is 85! She looks good!
Come on with these legendary convos. I love it. So many people are going to be introduced to a wonderful black figure in music.
OMG Black Music Archive.. MORE MORE POSTINGS PLEASE! YOU ARE DOING JUSTICE HERE WITH EDUCATING! MY HAT'S DOWN TO THIS PAGE. SUBSCRIBED.
I was shaking when I realized what this video was about… Oh my God!
Great interview with the legendary, Grace Bumbry! I'd love to see an interview with Leona Mitchell, Kathleen Battle, Florence Quivar and of course, the great Leontyne Price!!

She is my FAVORITE classical singer!!! She is amazing! Does she still teach?
And you did let your light shine, everywhere you went. Sleep in Heavenly Peace. Give Shirley our love.
Beautiful singing at the end there, with “this little light of mine“.
this was amazing!!!!! Thank you for highlightling our legends!!!
Brava! I remember her from her Carmen and was enraptured ever since, such a wonderful interview!!
An incredible singer, and an incredible life!
RIP Ms. Bumbry
Ok. This is a get. Grace, Leontyne, Shirley, Martina and Jessye are opera royalty. I heard her song the Wesendonck lieder at the Wigmore Hall while I was a student. It was extraordinary.
Man, you continue understanding our sensitivity in needing a channel such as yours…thank you for this! ❤️
Prima Diva: " I don't need to cover." Smart!! Her soft palate is naturally lifted. No need to always cover, it CAN darken. This is where A LOT of singers mess up. Trying to cover when not needed. Period 🎉🎉🎉🎉 true diva will be missed. Thank you for your ART
Sincere Condolences Iconic Singer
What a great interview! She still looked so lively and youthful and was so active and updated in her use of social media that I was truly expecting she'd be with us a little longer, but I'm really glad to know she had enough time to be acquainted with so many of her fans from all over the world through the internet, and that people, including those behind this channel, valued her ample legacy and made sure she knew how important she was for a lot of people from later generations and what an amazing treasure of artistic lessons in such a versatile array of roles and reference recordings (studio and live ones) she left for us. RIP, Grace Bumbry! A real legend that I hope will inspire others to follow on her great path.
A phenomenal interview on a truly phenomenal operatic mega star! Thank you for this feast.
I'm so enchanted by her accent. I'm wondering how it came to be.

I’ve found that African -American mezzos are the best at transitioning into other styles (ex. Maria Ewing, Jessye Norman). They seem to be chameleons!

I so agree with you on this one ☝🏾 most don’t sound the same or good when transitioning genres.
Do y'all remember when he did that video on Tina Turner and he was like, "She got big nose, a big mouth, big cheeks ... she got a big face." and he was like, 'and that makes a big sound'.? Well that same thing goes for Ms. Bumbry. She had such a big sound because she has a big face. She has a big strong sound. Don't no sound like that come from no tiny face.

Brava La Bumbry!
She is my love for ever❤
my favorite opera singer and the voice is still there and her great beauty
A true Black groundbreaker in a very specialized genre. Or young uns should watch these kinds of videos to give honor to these grandmothers as well.
Wonderful stuff, but Grace Bumbry was *not* the first black artist to sing at the White House. Soprano Marie Williams sang there for Rutherford Hayes in 1878; Sissieretta Jones sang there for Benjamin Harrison in 1892 and subsequently for William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt. Plus the Fisk Singers performed there for Chester Alan Arthur as early as 1882, and returned thereafter. And, as I am sure Ms. Bumbry knows, there *were* internationally active Black opera singers before Price/Bumbry/Verrett: Caterina Jarboro, Jules Bledsoe, Camilla Williams, Leonora Lafayette and Mattiwilda Dobbs, to name some.
Incredible!
Thank you for interviewing this marvelous singer! I'm so glad I've found your channel. What was the next to last operatic piece she sang? She's wearing a gown with black sleeves and a red and purple decolette. Please talk to Leontyne Price next!

Very precious. But in order to illustrate vocally her success in Salomé or Gioconda, why using late versions where she is out of breath on the high notes (which is normal in 1988 in Gioconda.) Fabulous recordings of her exist from 1977- 78 that show her in top shape.
