Grace Melzia Bumbry, an American opera singer, is considered one of the leading mezzo-sopranos of her generation, as well as a major soprano for many years. She was a member of a pioneering generation of African-American opera and classical singers who followed Marian Anderson (including Leontyne Price, Martina Arroyo, Shirley Verrett and Reri Grist) in the world of classical music and paved the way for future African-American opera and concert singers. Bumbry's voice was rich and sizable, possessing a wide range, and was capable of producing a very distinctive plangent tone. In 1966 she appeared as Carmen opposite Jon Vickers's Don José in two different lauded productions, one with Herbert von Karajan in Salzburg and the other for Bumbry's debut with the San Francisco Opera.

I wish these interviewers would stop saying " Ok "after every sentence the interviewee says. This is not professional. It is an honor to be interviewing this Opera Great and to say "ok " constantly is infuriating to watch.

It’s virtually impossible to name the “greatest conductor of all time”. However Karajan was exceptional in both opera and symphonic music. If he’s not the greatest, then I he is certainly one of the greatest, absolutely no question about that. I think his greatest years were the middle 50’s to the middle 70’s.

Is it just me or is there something… unusual about her accent? Like sometimes she sounds like a foreigner speaking English although she’s American.

You are correct but what you are hearing is not a foreign accent, it’s a hyper-corrected accent. It’s a variation of the so-called Mid-Atlantic accent, an accent devised by the film industry in the 1930s for a more neutral accent to make Hollywood movies accessible to both American and British audiences. That tradition lingered for many decades. It was adopted by many Hollywood actors, opera singers, as well as other public personas during their public appearances. It became the American way of “posh” speech. Some went as far as using it at home. I Recently, I watched a masterclass video with Grace Bumbry which was also quite recent, not that long before she passed away. She spoke regular American English and sounded quite normal.

Oh Emmanual how I wish we could see a lot more archive material of the maestro conducting. But the Sam time it is very interesting to get these personal insights from artists who worked with him. I think he really liked the afro American voice the depth and color of these voices is incredible. For instance Leontyne Price whom he first met in 1955 and he immediately recognised what a fantastic sound, she made and subsequently bought he to Europe to sing in Vienna and Salzburg. Coincidently she(Miss Price) did sing the role of Donna Anna for him several times. But I respect Miss Bumbry, s decision not to undertake the role as it could have damaged her voice or that she didn't feel comfortable with it but in this Carmen she is wonderful. But Karajan should not have been involved in the stage direction

This was the Carmen Salzburg producion that he had asked Leontyne Price to sing earlier, in 1965. She thought it was wrong for her (high soprano) voice! And I imagine he said more or less the same thing to her--"But for me you can sing anything..." He was unforgiving if a singer turned him down.

@@liedersanger1 well, in Leontyne‘s case he must have been forgiving, because he asked her to sing Trovatore in Salzburg and Vienna again more than one decade later.

Ruthlessly ambitious as a young man and grimly autocratic in his later years, Karajan's life story is marked by bitter rivalries, feuds and, most notoriously, membership of the Nazi party. Karajan created his own “myth,” carefully controlling his image. In photos, he never showed his size, nor smiled! He even used his own editing table to produce his films and documentaries. Karajan made himself a true “label” of classical music and mastered the codes of stardom, not unlike a movie star. He was a bigger fan of the Nazis than he made out, according to a historian who has unearthed previously unseen documents.

"Inexperienced" may inevitably come with young, but at least she allows the guest to respond without the self-important asides that many "experienced" interviewers would give in order to deflect importance to themselves. I enjoy the interviewer's style and enthusiasm, and now she is more experienced.
