Sadly as good as the card is, it is also the top for coil whine. Yes, yes "Mine is silent" blah blah. Asus knows about it so much so, that with the new Asus Matrix card, they point out the improvements made with coil whine.

The “mine is silent” crowd never really pushed this card. Also, this card’s 12vhpwr connector seems to have the highest melting rate.

@@PowellCat745 The melting thing might be a bit unfair due to sales vs other brands. I would guess there are more Asus and MSI cards out in the wild, but don't know the figs. My Suprim X just melted with a cablemod adapter.

They put an explicit GND testpoint possibly because they have a device that this PCB can pop into to quickly probe all the rails at once and its easier of the GND testpoint is shaped like all the other ones.

I think the different 3.3V rails might exist because they need to have a sequence in which the power rails are turned on. Maybe 3.3V_F is a fixed 3.3V rail, and 3.3V_SEQ is coming through a load switch, letting them sequence it?

I just watched the video for this card. Very informative. What I get from this content is that they could be a little more cost effective in the design, but Asus does have a reputation for OC ability. If they were to design the cards a little more cost effectively, would they maintain the performance roof?

How did you remove the PCB from the cooling fin? Could you present a video demonstration in the near future. I have bought an EK waterblock for my Asus RTX 4090 Strix. However, I had difficulty separating the cooling fin module on the I/O side glued to the PCB. I did not dare to cut the glue in fear of damaging the thin circuit on the PCB.

You'd have to disconnect the PWM VID signal that comes from the GPU. As long as you match the frequency of the PWM VID and amplitude it should work. Unless there's a restriction on the PWM range like 100% duty cycle = 1.15V or something.

I think that Mp2891 PWM is a part of the issue with the 4090s melting power cables. I don't think the adapters and connectors have suffcient ampacity to handle the draw. The switching speeds and energy efficiency measures in the PWM are leading to transient spikes. I don't think the MP2891 is the right chip.

hello buildzoid, it is interesting here for asus 4090 the input caps vs output caps choices... because for the consumer we find a lot of coil whine on asus cards (more than other brands). so perhaps either these choices can affect the amount of coil whine, or they are instead some attempt(s) by asus to reduce their levels of coil whine. or it could be due to the fact that they just use so many capacitors overall, or more is of certain types... another point about is that asus claims to have recently improved and so-called 'innovated' their inductors on brand new cards. which replaces their old version inductors. all in the name of better coil whine. but hahaha is it the chokes or the caps. anyhow you dont care about this. but it just maybe explains why they might do such weird looking things. since this issue is while nothing of performance, yet still a matter in response to so many complaints from users. who pays a lot of money for these gpus... so it stands to reason maybe the end result is both combination of whatever nvidia design specs dictates + their own asus performance or inhouse overclocker obsession(s) + also to simultaneously try to re-prioritize coile whine matter. which can be hard to pick apart. and separate one from the other. is my 2cents.

One thing Id like to piint out. Im into diy high end audio stuff and in that world they like to put electeolitic caps on the top of the pcb + some film caps in the back of the ocb because it has some electrical benefits and it sounds better. Maybe there is a similar reason why they mix the caps that way? Maybe its not because of the amount of capacitance but the combination of those kind of caps doing some good things in the ripple. Just thinking outloud so someone with more knowldege can shed some light on this 😊

For the money, the msi suprim/x is the best bang for buck PCB. No reason to spend $1900+ when you can get essentially the same PCB performance for $1700. And having binned ~10 of these and suprims, binning can be said to not exist.
