You are the one and only art teacher on KZread who painted Gouache like Gouache. Thank you for your lessons and videos.
Thanks a lot 😊
That’s a really great tip about anchoring your value relationships with a strong dark early on. I’ve found that to be kinda tricky sometimes especially with gouache drying a step or so darker, it’s easy to either go too dark or too light with things. But if you can establish that balance early on it’ll help guide everything that comes after it. I really liked the cool vs warm on the shadow side of the truck. That felt very realistic to me. Nicely done!

Thank you so much! Yea! Possibly one of the most reoccurring issues students have is not pushing the value enough. Not anchoring in those darks and ending up with a washed out looking scene.
Wonderful demo
Excellent sketch and lesson. I took several notes from this, particularly about using warm and cool to highlight each other, and using saturation to provide focus and depth. Thanks for the great tips!

It is the best way to learn. I did a video a long time ago about painting a white house. I always have students find a white house to sketch as an assignment because so much becomes clear when you don't have to fuss with local color.
So good! Love the contrast between the warm light and cool shadows, it really shows when painting white objects. Thanks for sharing.

I love it. Wish they kept them the way they were. I don’t like the née redesign.

@@JaredCullum oh i know it! The old design was practical, it had maneuverability.. A little workhorse. The new design is retarded. All cab, no bed. A useless status symbol.... Ah, the old days.
Hey Jared! What is the brand of the square brush you use all the time? Your painting demos are my favourite btw!

Thank you! It's a Raphael Kaerrell 3/4 or 1" flat brush :)

Thank you! It’s a custom handmade box. You could use any old watercolor tin to the same effect though :)
Hello. I'm interested in supporting you in patreon in the future. When it said extender version of the video. Does it mean it would be slowed down too? Thanks!

Yes- thanks for asking. For $1 or more I put the mostly unedited version of the demos on patreon with a reference photo if you want to paint a long. I sometimes cut a little if it’s just filling in an area of the same thing but it’s mostly just the full demo with voice over.
I have around 70% colour deficient eyesight (colourblindness) and I really struggle getting shadow colours correct like that whole side of the truck, I can't begin to work out what colour that is. There is a myth that having colourblindness means you see in grey or black and white where in fact you see some colours but are blind to certain combinations, for instance for me when I look at faces I see what I can only describe as a mid green tone on the skin. Do you have advice for artists that struggle with colour mixing? Thanks.

Wow- I wish I had good advice for that but I don't believe I have anything specific to it. I'll keep an eye out for painters who also have that and can maybe be of some help. I do think- color really is the icing on the cake and value is the real core element of making a picture. So I'd say focus your energy on the value and getting the large value relationships correct and do the best you can to vary in temperature within that tight framework.

@@JaredCullum Thank you so much for your reply and keep making wonderful videos! Yes I too believe that colour is the icing and take comfort in things like the Zorn palette. I do try to take positives as I've have had people in the past comment that they like my choice of colours but I can't see what they see so I can't say why they do, my paintings just look 'normal' to me..I should look at my choices as unique I guess?
