@@JaredCullum My pleasure. Would you do this kind of underpainting/ vibrant notes that you mention here in a watercolour portrait? I can see theoretically how this glazing could work well for skin but my attempts have just made some really pink or orange people…. (And scenes for that matter🤦🏼‍♀️). You explained the purpose of your underpainting so clearly here so Any advice/ videos on this at some point would be greatly appreciated!

@@3Alexa7 hello! Sorry for the delay but yes I would- it really is a case by case though. Every painting is a new chess match of problems to solve. Most likely I would start out with light saturated colors though.

I like either burnt sienna or light wash of inktense color bark. Depending if painting is either warm or cool I just shift or go lazy and use both. I prefer inktense as an underpainting bc much like oils, that wont budge wich makes it perfect for an underpainting.

Interesting. I’ll have to check into those. I’ve stuck with the same underpainting method for a while. I did to try more variation and see results- also I should try a more traditional method too sometime.

@@JaredCullum ​ If it is just for fun sketches inktense should do fine. Had no problem with mine fading. However, like the name says, it is ink and when diluted I have no information on lightfast. I did not even bother to ask derwent as I am not a selling artist ( I wish,lol ). Im kindof heavy handed with watercontrol issues, So this works fine for me for now. In your case I would however ask marketing at derwent for lightfast ratings. They have a realy sweet marketing team. Im sure they are willing to help. Grisaille can be done in so many hues that it is fun to experiment wich works for your method. Someone who can tell you on lightfast of inktense it is Lachri from Lachri's fine art channel she has awesome tips on ways of using them if you want to try it.

Don’t hate me but your dabbing paper towel is also an interesting study that actually almost mirrors your painting (and a little more interesting in the abstract) lol.

Jared...did you try Golden open acrylics...they work exactly like gouache and won't dry for long time....they are slow drying acrylics...with just spraying water in a stay wet palette they stay wet forever .

This is such a wonderful painting -- I definitely should try blocking in colors before drawing in the objects. How do you set up your still life and take photos of them as a reference?

I don’t put a lot of thought in the setup. I set things around until I find an angle I just like. I try to make sure I have a couple different material surfaces in it. Like a matte and a shiny object for example

It's just a watercolor box. It's not particularly practical. I think gouache is probably best used directly on a damp paper towel unless you're doing a lot of it. I like packing it in a box for travel but you can't tip the box and you have to let it dry out before closing or it will mold.

Yeah, the mold would definitely be an issue. As of this point I haven't tried to dry out and rewet gouache.

Yes- every time for gouache. Unless it’s a really small sketch or master study. It’s too finicky to rewet

About 1.5 hour.

I like the idea of the paint in the pans, but the colors get “contaminated”. How do you clean your paints when you are done? Do you just wipe off the top?

Good questions. I have just done it alot and I think I stopped caring about contamination. You're right. It happens. A little contamination is good because it helps to harmonize and gray down the colors but it can get a way from you quick. So- yes. I do clear the tops off the colors but more often than not I don't pay attention to it. Thank you for watching, Eric!

@@JaredCullum thanks. That's a great point. As I think about it, I'm that way with my pallette, so I guess it happening in the pans does make since that it works out in the end.

My biggest issue with gouache was ...blending...but using hot press paper using thicker gouache ....meaning more paint less water....helped to blend like oils...is that true? Or just my imagination?

Absolutely. That is correct. Gouache is best treated like oil- I find… you get a good blend if you develop speed with it too but gouache is tough to get that lush oil quality. I have heard good things about “blending medium” Lena rivo has a video on the stuff. I used some in this video but I didn’t use enough to know if it made a difference.

I often do- sometimes I forget. Hot press paper. Arches 140lb. M graham gouache. :)
