Painting Skunk Cabbage in Gouache
James Gurney visits a mosquito-infested swamp to paint skunk cabbage. He first primes the watercolor paper with an abstract priming color in casein. Using a large flat brush he cuts in the dark background shapes to define the leaves. Finally he switches to small round and rigger brushes to paint the veins on the leaves. Gurney washes the mud off his painting companion Smooth and cleans up his brushes.

I wonder if this is the only skunk cabbage in gouache tutorial in the known universe...or if there are others who have attempted such things....
As I visit different online painting groups I always notice what influences you have in teaching people to be BRAVE in their approach after watching your demos. The realness appears as you build it it up. Thanks for being out there for all the”students” out there!
I could watch this over and over. Hey, I think I will!
“We’ll here I am in the swamp” best opening line ever
I really like your way of painting ! Thank you for the work behind your videos! See you soon ! Big like! Greetings from AJP Relaxing Jazz Piano
One of my new favorites of yours. So simple, yet whenever I scroll past the thumbnail I have to do a double-take when I realize it's not a photo. Absolutely nailed the lighting on this one!
Just yesterday as i was walking outside, i saw a plant the sun was falling onto in a interesting way. My first thought was "james would love to paint that". 😁 lovely painting. Captured the light beautifully.
It came around so nicely. Think that underpainting worked very well. Thanks for cleaning up Smooth.
You captured the subtle shifts in greens so well so inspiring! I discovered a patch of this stuff when it was in full bloom and it smelled SO BAD 😝
I love your videos and always learn a lot. My big take away from this one is thst I can use acrylic gouache to do underpaintings which I have and so won't have to buy Casein just yet. I won't, however, be painting skunk cabbage. Here, where I live in Northern BC, Canada skunk cabbage is a staple food for the grizzly and black bears when they first come out of hibernation. Unless they can find a painter. Then they will eat them instead! 👨🎨
Love it! The tip on the dollar store Tupperware is a great idea. I’ll have to try it!
A highlight of my time in this increasingly insane world is your posts. Thank you, always.
Good boy Smooth! Loved the painting! Thanks
Great job... Small scale paintings need more focused detail. You nailed it 👍🏿
Your title is funny, it's fun to watch your intro, how could you think of the smoke screen effect. Sketching is very fun. It is a unique choice to draw a plant alone. It is a unique idea. You draw very well, and it surprises me every time.
All plein air artists gangsta until James Gurney shows up.
You're amazing!!!..😍😍😍 I love all your paintings
Very nice result ! Foliage really intimidates me, but I like skunk cabbage myself, so just might try it!
Best KZread channel ever. Sometimes I forget about James and then I remember, I pop on an episode and just relax. So calming and great for learning brilliant techniques. Thank you James for all you do.
Going to have to head to a park across the river from me in February --there's a terrific marshy area with lots of skunk cabbage!
I love these classic field videos
I would not be able to last 2 sec with the mosquito ! Great illustration- new fan here !!💕

Thanks and welcome
Nice as always
James. That was great.
Always enjoyed watching him doing outdoor painting! I hope we can see more of his Paleoart in the future!
You captured this unusual plant beautifully! I appreciate the casein alternatives you mentioned. You are much more tolerant of the mosquitos than I am! Where I live, those little nasties plus fire ants test my patience and I usually fail, LOL.
Thank you again for sharing..
Thank you for inspiration 👍
"Good boy, Smooth !". We love the boy.
Замечательно, великолепно, свежо и по-весеннему)) Спасибо
Never heard of Casein paint. Bought some. Will try it as a base with gouache. Thanks.
Respectfully: Damn you Gurney!
love watching your process all the time :D
Good boy, Smooth! :) I liked this painting, because you left it in a somewhat rough state. Some paintings are just better this way. Thanks for this video!
Stunning
Great topic and enjoyable to watch as always!
I've just was exited with greens in the field and decided to draw some. Your work is amazing. Thanks 🙏
You did the magic again! You always make it a happy day, when I find a new of your extraordinary motivating videos! Thank you very much!
Like you, smooth is a living legend
Thank you for sharing all those precious videos! Have a lovely day!🌸🌸🌸
There is something so beautifully relaxing about these videos. They inspire me and bring me a sense of comfort. Thanks James 😊
Love your video! Big hug!
I read the title as “Planting Skunk Cabbage in Gauche” 😆😂
Gouache has always felt intimidating to me but these videos make it so accessible! As an aside, I have used everything as a paint pallet from a tupperware lid, to the back of my hand (while only using nontoxic paints of course)
Satisfaction guaranteed James Gurney
Lovely
It is amazing how you paint and finish the leaves colors in a patch of another green back ground. Hope I could pick up from you slowly. Thks for sharing James !
Amazing skill
Awesome!!
So great to see this. Thanks

Hi, how are you doing??
Great stuff!
Smooth is truly the Best Boi ❤️
Clicked because I thought skunk cabbage was a euphemism for weed. Stayed because the skill is legit.
I want one of those pencil black wing
😀
Thermacell is the best thing for mosquitos ever. Look them up.
Класс супер 👍💯
Incrível
😍🤗
Lovely as always! I've been very compelled by Bob Pepper's illustrations lately. His book covers and his art for dragonmaster and dark tower have an illuminated manuscripts quality to them. I haven't been able to understand his technique. He said "My technique is to cement down charcoal paper, float water into areas of the illustration, and border the area with dark gouache which spreads and settles in the warpings of the wet paper. After that dries flat, I float dyes on top to color the area.". Would you ever consider doing a series of studies on other artists works? I think that would be delightful.
Hi james I’m sure you have been asked a million times but will we get to see another book in the dinotopia series? I have read the first book as a kid and I’m im a father. Really hope I get to see another couple :)
🙏🌊🔱🌪️🌪️🌪️
If you wrapped Smooth's middle in foil, could you just use him as a palette?
i wouldn't last a minute out with mosquitoes, they love my blood too much. also, have you ever tried the gansai tambi watercolours?
Hi James, haven't you ever thought about entering the world of digital 3d? With all your knowledge and skill fantastic things would happen, I was thinking about it while reading, Imaginative Realism
James, come to al Islam n success
