This is the place for insights into drawing and painting by Dinotopia creator James Gurney. You'll find practical tips and techniques in oil, watercolor, and other plein-air art media. I take you behind the scenes in the making of concept art and fantasy paintings, and I share useful methods for painting scientifically-accurate reconstructions of dinosaurs.

Would hounding be what we call aerial perspective today?
What are those things that keep the sketchbook clamped?
Lmao
Do you have ground under paint on this painting? It looks like just the white of the paper. I see in your other videos you sometimes use red or paint a ground first. So why not in this case?
Love your channel. You are so good at explaining things quickly and simply. And thank you for not just saying "practice more"
Dear Mr. Gurney, thanks for your salute in Spanish, although I'm not Mexican. Best regards from Spain!
I hope he releases replicas of Denison's journals. They better be made from eco-paper, organic paint and eco-plastic.
Thank you again for this James, it is really informative and yet still fun to watch! I always get so much from watching these videos that you put out, they are educational and yet so relaxing as well. I always feel the need to get the brushes and paints out after watching too so it is safe to say that you are inspirational to so many and obviously me too! best wishes and thanks again.
Wow! What a great "discussion" about gouache. I really enjoyed all the questions and answers. I enjoyed your painting, and I bet it was a lot of fun taking a ride on that iceboat! Thank you so much for this tutorial and for answering all the questions. 👏🏻
Excellent tutorial!
You are far far far above my skill level. You are still getting that like share save and follow from me because I absolutely absolutely love your work! A cat can look at a king
I love you, James! You’re clearly a warm, genuine man. And god are you talented.
I ALWAYS learn something new from your painting videos, Mr. Gurney. Folks, if you dont own his book Color & Light, you NEED to pick it up. It's literally the best book on the subject. You will learn so much from it.
Your DIY gatgets are the best!
The background sound makes the experience really inmersive. Another great video!
I lke the work, of course, but also the sound, to have the background noise instead of "music" is a plus IMO.
Modern day Master
the warm tones below the sea foam is delicious
This giant pencil reminds me of the Artattack programme 😂
This is the coolest video/channel I've seen all month.
If a soup can can be worth millions. Four gum ball machines should be worth four times as much. 👍
Well, hello, James, I haven't found any new videos of yours, of late. So happy to see you.
Love your art ❗️
beautiful❤
You 1-upped everyone that shares pics of their food on FB...lol
Well that brought back a few memories! My Great Uncle Homer was in the gumball machine business in Portland, Maine from the 1960s to the 1980s. He would give a great big bag of gumballs to me, my brother and sister when we visited him and my Aunt in the summers of my childhood.
Always been waiting for your videos, it really helps me with my anxiety. I juz wish it's longer than 10mins 🙏or maybe 20? 😊

Excellent! - and the background soap opera: "Times have changed!"
Amazing!
Mr Gurney your brushwork is much more stable than my mental health.
You never stop to amaze me!! Thanks for sharing
I love your painting! You have a great vision of what will make an interesting painting. 💜😎🇺🇸
How does he make it look so easy, absolute masterclass every time. Thank you Mr Gurney.
It’s a journal, not just art. James Gurney is a true artist, his life is painting and he paints his life. Thank you Mr Gurney.
*cringe*
At least you didn’t shoo the woman away from the gum ball machine 😀 Fantastic painting James!👍🏻
They do have a beauty of their own. And what seems like an everyday item today, may be viewed as an intriguing, long-gone item years from now.
Fun! Art is everywhere. You always find it! Thanks for sharing!
ill have a gumball thanks
I love it so much! Very interesting to use a brushe instead a pencil. And what I love the most, is the fast sketch, and painting you can do!
Oh dang, it took you 2.5 hours to do this. That means it would take me 5+. Thanks, miss your videos.
Fabulous! Wish I had the confidence to paint anywhere 😅
It's an interesting arrangement. If they were antiques from a century ago people would say it was art. I'd guess.
From sidewalk garbage to laundromat gumball machines.. masterpieces! ❤️
The oil painting in your book “Color and Light” of the gumball machine in Mahone Bay NS is one of my favorites.
Make me wonder how the heck you managed to stumble onto this laundromat and these gumball machine? Jeanette letting you do the laundry this week?
I wouldn’t have thought to paint that, it’s quite remarkable!
Amazing 💓
Combination of uniform shape of machines and enthusiastic shapes and color of contents. Cool. Love it. Thx!
What a fun subject! Love the colours, the general mood with the music and your setup 🧡
