Classic VW Bus Gouache Demo

Hello Art-family,
This demo is a place I pass every day walking my dog in the mornings. Up the street I have a neighbor who has an old VW bus. It still drives- I see him out from time to time. I like this spot it is parked at and I talk about why in the video. Thanks for watching and thank you to all the new subs!
Happy sketching,
Jared

    I've been very inspired by the videos of James Gurney, so I got a set of gouache paint. I looked for more gouache videos here on KZread but mainly found young women painting fairies and galaxies. Finally I found your channel: I love your content! Really great to hear what your thought process is. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and investing so much time in recording, editing and doing the narrative. It is very much appreciated!

    Awesome! Lena and James are the best. Check out pixelpchan, Mike Hernandez, tiffanie Mang, Jesse Winchester Schmidt, and heather Martin. They are incredible gouache artists. Tiffanie has some gouache classes on gumroad. So does pixelpchan. All cheap and incredibly informative. I made a lot of poor sketches before I understood the medium more. I’m still learning. :) thanks for watching

    Thank you so much, Myriam :) I love that trick when it works out. Invariably when someone sees a sketch they point out that they like how I added this or that little dot of bright color- which is usually from the initial wash or the pink/purple sketch lines that create a kind of vibration. :)

    Great minds thinking alike. I recently jumped into water mixable oils and found I went kind of organically straight to a magenta tiny round to do my sketch so that's now washed over (pun intended) to my gouache work, as well. I also enjoy that little pop peeking out. Love the trip down memory lane, so to speak :) with the van. Takes me back to my flared jeans and choker necklaces. :)

    LOVE your videos and your informative commentary. I've just switched from watercolour to gouache, because I can't get my values right with watercolour. Darkest darks turn to mud. My husband said that the little gouache sketch was the best thing I've done. I would probably prefer to use both watercolour and gouache in a sketch, because I do love the transparency of watercolour. I also love the beautiful brightness of gouache. Anyway, I love watching and listening to you and I think your work is really fine.

    Thank you for the kind words! I know what you mean. I wonder if people perceive gouache as more finished than watercolor because of the opacity. I don't know. I've had similar response regarding the differences between mediums and outcome of work. I will say that working with gouache will help you to think about value differently and improve your watercolor when you go back to it. Check out Alvaro Castagnet, Andy Evanson and Joseph Zbukvic (watercolorists) to see how they really punch home value.

    love your videos, especially the opaque uses of guoache. I know it dries pretty fast but is there a couple of minutes where you can blend strokes on the page in the opaque form. I know if you dilute you can blend by reconstituting but what is the time window for opaque blending?

  • @JaredCullum

    @JaredCullum

    4 жыл бұрын

    callmedeno hi! Yes. There is a window where you can get a decent lush oily looking blend but you have to go relatively fast. If you watch the Arteza gouache demo I talk about it on that. You don’t have a big window- like 30 seconds to a minute so it helps to premix some variations and try to plan a bit.

    Very awesome man! Really love this one. How do you feel painting on a surface like this vs on cotton? I've been painting on those pentallic journals and they have some cotton content I think which is new for me but it definitely feels different than the last mixed media paper i used.

  • @JaredCullum

    @JaredCullum

    5 жыл бұрын

    Danny Sabra i love it for sketching. The pentalic boast 100 perfect I think but I believe if you look into it they have a slight blend but it’s not that noticeable. I like a cotton for watercolor because of the absorption. My favorite gouache surface is crescent 100 board. You can’t beat that. It just sits comfortably on top. Erases cleanly and blends well. I recommend you get a board of that and cut it down and give that a shot some time. :) watercolor does excellent on cotton. It’s tough to beat Arches 100% cotton. They’re remarkable for watercolor. But the pentalic sketchbooks are some of the best you can buy.

  • @JaredCullum

    @JaredCullum

    5 жыл бұрын

    Thank you, Stefne! It can be reactivated, however, it does not hold together nearly as well as watercolor. Watercolor hardens and stays together where gouache turns chalky and crumbles into bits. I have tried many different ways of getting around this problem but the reality is, I think you're better off pouring a little fresh paint each time. Eventually you get used to not pouring too much and wasting less. But gouache really works best straight out of the tube.

  • @JaredCullum

    @JaredCullum

    Жыл бұрын

    Sorry I’m late to respond. Don’t worry about it cracking on the painting- I mean- gouache isn’t really meant for finished museum quality work. It’s mostly intended for a sketching medium. My friend tiffanie Mang uses it thickly though and I don’t see hers crack on the board. It may depend on the brand too. It certainly cracks and falls apart I’m a palette. Either way- varnishing is a great idea. I use a matte spray varnish. I’ve seen people use wax but I like the spray varnish. It will help UV protect it as well! Good luck!

  • @JaredCullum

    @JaredCullum

    4 жыл бұрын

    Sneha Kandoi good question! I have some considerations... shapes- if the value and light is interesting. If the texture of the various objects is interesting. Largely it has more to do with if I just think it will look good. A lot of what I sketch is pretty arbitrary. Make what I can about what I see. I’d recommend keeping it simple at first if you get back into it. Maybe draw things you see to get moving and back into it.

  • @JaredCullum

    Mark Tuck hi Mark! Yes- I used a lot of water in the initial wash just to get a ground down to build on. I use minimal water from there on out. Any amount of water really breaks down gouache. It’s a finicky medium. That’s the most common issue I see people have.

    Why don't you paint close to the true colors of the photo? Or do you tone down or alter colors for harmonies sake?

  • @JaredCullum

    @JaredCullum

    5 жыл бұрын

    Good question. I don't tend to think I'm that far off in terms of color. That's a complicated thing- because in my experience painting on location I know some elements have more color than a photograph. Photographs crunch the value and the color out of a scene. My main goal is to hang on the system of value first. Color is like third or maybe 4th important to me. So- with that said- I think your guess is right. Because I consider the color harmony and the saturation more important than copying the photograph. I increase or decrease saturation utilizing harmonies of duel compliments to control which areas are more interesting than others. I hope that makes sense. Thanks for your question. It's a good one.

    Clayton Dupree i know what you mean. That’s a really difficult transition to make but at least you’ve been working on value which is important. My best advice would be to do master studies and find out how they mixed the colors they mixed to get their results. Wyeth, Sargent etc.. I like to go to the library and get the big print catalogs of their work and then do small mini versions in sketchbooks of their paintings. That helped me a lot.
