Gotye - Somebodies: A YouTube Orchestra

Reluctant as I am to add to the mountain of interpretations of Somebody That I Used To Know seemingly taking over their own area of the internet, I couldn't resist the massive remixability that such a large, varied yet connected bundle of source material offered.
I was directly inspired here by Kutiman's Thru-You project:
• Kutiman - Thru-you - 0...
Wonderful stuff!
Thankyou to everyone who has responded to Somebody That I Used To Know via KZread. It's truly amazing!
All audio and video in Somebodies is from the KZread user videos featured, each of them a cover or parody of Somebody That I Used To Know. No extra sounds were added to the mix, but I used some EQ, filtering, pitch-shifting and time-stretching to make the music.
I avoided using any existing remixes of the song, or any covers from tv talent shows.
As comprehensive and extensive as I tried to be with my downloading of source videos, I know there are many clips that I missed. Tay Zonday's cover for instance, no internet mashup should be without him.
I used KeepVid.com to download the KZread videos, Ableton Live for audio stretching, pitch-shifting and the initial video editing, and Adobe's After Effects to put the final video together.
Big thanks to Travis Banko for assistance with downloading source videos, and to James Bryans for After Effects tutelage.
Thankyou to Barry for being Barry, and guiding us all.
Thanks to you for listening
Wally

this to me is what KZread rewind should be. Not a meet up of KZreadrs that'll recreate this year's memes, but a celebration of a community people creating stuff that they love.

KZread's rewind's are getting worse and worse. Last year was bad enough to make this Rewind not even try. If KZread did this and people come together, like The animation industry and Music community, and others too. People would feel proud of themselves.

I'm so glad Gotye did this. Some artists can be a bit defensive about covers, especially parodies, but it really is meant as affection and another example of your music binding people from different walks of life together.

Almost 11 years later, this is still something I come back to every once in a while. To me, it is one of the most incredible things ever done on the internet/youtube. Thank you so much to everyone involved.
I keep coming back to this too ever since I first discovered it (don't even remember how). Not only did it introduce me to a lot of wonderful singers and musicians I'd never have found otherwise (Pentatonix, Sam Tsui, Tiffany Alvord, and Matthias Harris), but it just made the song so much more amazing than it already was, and showed how many truly creative people there are in the world, and how something like music can unite us all. Not to mention the fact Gotye approved of it, and that the creator of the mashup did such an amazing job of bringing it altogether. Still have to say the best parts are anything with Pentatonix and the union of the Dutch choir with Erock's metal rendition, gives me chills every time.

I love how you used this at your concert, Wally. It's great that you didn't ignore the creative work that came out of your song, but accepted it and spread it around! ^_^
Wow I wish I'd had this in my life for the past 9 years instead of just finding it today, people are so talented - amazing
This is like a fantastic little six-minute rock opera. The fact that so many people cover it attests to its universal appeal and message, and if the original weren't as brilliant and complex as it is, it could never induce so many interesting interpretations. You can watch this multiple times, and enjoy a new aspect with each viewing. Bravo! Bravo! Bravo!
You have turned a sweet lament into an ode to joy. Thank you!

I remember when this first came out....still beautiful as ever
I've come back to this so many times. This video is what brought me into the world of covers and mashups. It introduced me to Sam Tsui, 331Erock, and several others, who in turn led me to other artists such as Lindsey Stirling and Pentatonix. Though Sam was the one I linked to from here, the best part has to be Erock's metal being matched by the Dutch choir.
Man I’m not a musician but this is the sh*t I love about the internet. Incredible.
loved it to the core ! this orchestra is pure justice to the beauty Gotye created !
The force is strong with this one. Hey Wally, if you ever read this, I'm very inspired by your creativity and musicianship. Can't wait for your next album. Thanks...
Wow, a whole singing orchestra and that plucking, amazing!! Everyone looks beautiful.
Haven't watched/listened to this in a while. Came back to listen again today. Awesome!
I was just watching this again and realized it's been over 2 years since this came out. I still tear up every time I watch this. It just shows how much respect he has for others that have covered his song.
This is still one of the greatest things on the internet.
one of the greatest things ever.
I can't stop revisiting this
What I love best about this fantastic compilation video was in the comment section. Somebody quoted the "no one can play a guitar by himself" guy. With the reply. "Except Batman." 12 years later and it still makes me smile.
This is one of my favorite things to even happen on the internet
How did i miss so many covers?! They're freaking amazing! THIS IS AMAZING!
This brings me joy every time I watch it. :)
Came back after years of not listening to this collab, and it's still pretty damn epic!
If he could get ever person together to do one big live event: LIFE WOULD BE MADE.
Somebodies who finally make music worth to listen... Thank you Gotye... try to find new unique instruments which will inspire you... thank you!
I came back to find it, 11 years later. Stil very good. I am super impressed by the edit. I also shudder to think of all the clips that did not make it. Creating this must have taken so much time.
It's been five years now, and, like +Manapeerfr, I still come back to listen to this, for the same reasons. Thank you, Wally, both for the original song and for being generous enough to give us this, too.
no matter how many times i watch this video - i still get the chills :D
Man still an amazing video today the community really swelled around this song in a way i haven't seen since. I mean when will your fav ever make a mashup like this
7 years and still counting, this video and this song actually motivates me at the first time I listen to it and lead me to win at 1st position in competition in 2012. Thank you so much Gotye for this blessed content.
My mom, sister, and I all jam to this on girls trips. We all love Gotye. Kudos to everyone featured in this incredible compilation
Just when I think I'm sick to death of remixes of this song..... PLAY ALL THE VERSIONS!!!
This is one of the coolest things I've ever heard.
can i just say that was one of the most amazingly artistic things i've ever seen! i love your brain and your insight into that! thank you for posting it and sharing it with the world!
this is quite amazing. thanks so much for sharing and blessing us with this performance
This is actually amazing. great mix. really funny in the middle then awesome electric guitar.
I love this masterpiece ❤️
This is spliced so well together, very creative, and I love that it showcases so many wonderfully talented people.
Very impressive remix, very well put together. The way each segment flowed into the next, the way you built up each chorus adding more and more elements in, very well done. And of course, it's impressive to see how many different and unique interpretations of this song are out there. Certainly wasn't expecting the choir!
Inspiring for other musician. THIS is the age of ultimate music making. THIS IS RIDICULOUS!!-LY AWESOME!!
