Thanks for the review. I can’t believe how much better the built-in mic sounded. I’d love to see a review where you include the video with the audio and try standing a few feet back - which would be more of a real world look at the difference between the two.

seriously, the media mod sounds like it is lacking any kind of bass, it sounds bad! it sounds worse than the built in mics.

There is evidence that the Gopro engineers originally wanted to put in a good microphone but instead you find two cheap capsules instead. I can only assume it was a cost cutting measure. I almost feel personally insulted by how bad the product is.

You say that because you proceed from an incorrect premise -- that audio is important to video manufactures, its not. Camera manufactures -- ALL camera manufactures -- put 95% of their efforts into the video. Audio get the other 5%. You're buying a video camera, not an audio recorder.

Great review! I just wish they put feet on the media mod so we can change batteries without having to take the gopro out of the mount. I mainly want it for using external mics.

Good review. Obviously for the microphone alone the media mod is worth it. If you want more youtube or television ready media mod is a must where sound quality is important.

Great video but you forgot to tell us how you use an external mic. I have a RODE wireless I use with my Osmo Action and I was hoping to use it with the gopro 9.

What would be good is for a review of rear screen protectors that are suitable for the Media Mod. I fitted a screen protector to the rear screen of my GoPro, and what I noticed was that it formed a nice "invisible" bond to the rear screen. HOWEVER when fitting it into the Media Mod, the screen protector got pushed out of line by a millimetre or so as it wouldn't fit under the MM's bodywork. The result was an air bubble between the rear screen and the screen protector. Some recommendations for slightly smaller screen protectors that will work inside a MM would really help and would be some top advice.

Yea if you don't need an action camera just get a normal one. Peopl normally get gopro for extreme stuff that mirror less can't do. You can't really compare these 2 cams they are built for diff purpose. Personally I felt thta go pro 8 was a waste of money especially since they release this hero9 which is wya btr. Hero 9 is now worth and close to perfect. I would buy the hero 9 and I think it would still be in the game after 10 years. But I don't have the money😂😂

Great time for photography. I normally shoot canon full frame for weddings but enjoyed my m50 for light travel. Transitioning to an RP for full frame sensor but mirrorless form factor. And like 8 batteries 😂 I wonder if this media mod mic is even a real shotgun mic. I know GP8 media mod isn’t even a shotgun mic in there. Interchangeable / replaceable lens is welcome. If the GOPro subscription really does replace your GOPro if damaged it’s definitely worth the price if that is in fact the case. When I buy new cameras I try to get warranty for it too.

idk why your videos are just so satisfying

OK folks while I might not be the best of audio people I can suggest this. I am going to speculate that while the sound directly from the Mod Mic sounds tinny and worse than what comes directly from the GoPro (the stock audio probably is boosted to allow "warmer" sounding audio). It's probably being processed correctly through the GoPro so you can boost and modify it in Post. Think of the audio coming from the "Better" and specific mic is allowing better audio to be processed for after the fact. Remember different mics are designed to pick up specific audio for specific reasons. Kinda like the analogy how a shotgun and a rifle still do the same thing but the projectiles that come from it are designed to get different results. Make sense???

Built in sounds full range. Media mod has a high pass filter to cut wind noise and random rumble

I love your videos and you help me alot. I have a GoPro hero 3,4,5,6,7,8 and now the 9 and I love my hero 9. Oh and I bought the new media mod for the hero 9 can't wait to get it in the mail. I know people say this media mod is not the best. When I get it I will be checking it out. Also will be putting my GoPro light on it . Well keep up with the gopro videos and stay safe .!

Does anyone know If the HDMI output playback on the media mod is in full resolution of the recorded video file? Or does it max out at a certain resolution?

Question, filmed with a MM for the first time just yesterday. Included a Wireless Go in the MM. Sound was great, but the actual videos that were recorded were not compatible with a former version of Premiere. Prior videos shot with just the H9 work perfectly with the old Premiere version. Did I miss a setting in the H9 to video with the MM?

When using the Hero 8, I found the best audio was when I selected "stereo" and I thought that audio sounded ok. The mics on the media mod for the 9 didn't sound good at all and apparently you have to select either front or back but not stereo. Bummer.

Thanks for this video! I just ordered a Media Mod and a motorcycle helmet chin mount. I have a Hero 9, and plan on doing some motorcycle vids in a few weeks. I'm hoping a lavalier mic will work to catch my voice inside the helmet. Is there a trick on removing the Hero 9 battery door? I don't want to break it.

I found the media mod to be pretty good but for some reason when I have it on, it goes straight to a Media Mod setup and won't let me change it to anything other than 2.7k. I don't have this issue if I don't use the mod...strange.

I would be curious to know if Quick Capture now works with the Media Mod and an external (3.5mm) microphone. On my Hero 8, Quick Capture will not record audio with the Media Mod installed.

when he cut the box open from the bottom... good video though I would get the media mod if it didn't sound like you were making an announcement over the speaker on an airplane

Your videos are good. You cover the important points with minimum fluff. After buying a Hero 9 purely for walk-around style vlogging I am disappointed with the built-in microphone. On your video there is a clear improvement with this accessory so it looks as if I will need to get my wallet out again.

Why not just make the GoPro the size of the media mod + the ability to have wireless Microphone on board receiver and transmitter , separate or third party wireless waterproof microphone, do away with onboard microphone holes., wireless charging and no over heating while filming . You could to treble your battery life with power pack or a grip with batteries...,, Your only limit would be memory card size. . All water proof. With the current image stabilisation and features 👍 the ultimate action cam. 👌 maybe ready by GoPro 25. 😱

Well, I bought the Gopro 9 and I didn't manage to add external mic using the classic Gopro mic adapter. Another disappointment is the USB-C port is not outputting video signal. It seems we are stuck with Media Mod which is not to be found in any store. Just like Media Mod for Gopro 8.

The mic onboard mic sounds juristically better. Inside outside. Everywhere. So now im faced with? Should i buy the media mod?

I ordered it on release day from GoPro website we must have sold out now they probably only had a small amount for launch

By the time I got all the mods for the 8, the 9 was out. Got the 9 and filming with it already. Disappointed the mods are out of stock. Glad the 9 media mod has the wind cover and rubber port covers. I was hoping for quicker easier battery and sd card changes with the media mod on
