Hi Parker, I really love your work, you guys are amazing! I just want to tell to you there is one feature that means a lot to us who will actually use GoPro as the action camera. New Hero9 has an option to record and delete up to 30 seconds while it is turned off, so when you turn it on, it will save the last 30 seconds while it was off. That is a great option and I will upgrade my Hero8 to Hero9 mostly because of it because I am doing fishing videos. With Hero8, I have to record whole time so I don't miss fish strike. That means I am emptying battery very quickly, same as the storage room. With Hero9, my battery will last longer, same as the storage room because 95% of time I am actually filming something I won't use later. Thanks again on all your work, keep it up!

I appreciate the fact that you mentioned filters will interfere with stabilization. One note though. You said you'd like to see the 180° shutter rule being usable with hypersmooth but... The whole point of hypersmooth working is that it needs perfectly motion free pictures to be able to align them and smooth out the motion so unless they figure out a way to add digital motion blur we're stuck with either stabilized footage or static 24p at 1/48 shutter speed. I would actually like to see software being able to do that realistically and reliably (kinda like RSMB but better)

You need to use the MAX MOD LENS (sold separately by GoPro) with the Horizon Levelling function, then the Crop is eliminated by the larger Wide Angle Lens.

This isn't fixable without going to an optical or physical form of stabilization. GoPro uses purely electronic stabilization which shifts the framing, works great so long as the shutter speed is high but once the shutter speed is lower, you'll be able to see the image shifts between frames "baked" into the footage. Anyone who thinks this can be fixed doesn't understand electronic stabilization. GoPro did improve this issue though on the Hero 9 (I never had the Hero 8 so I don't know), now in low light the shutter speed doesn't go below 180 degree shutter angle (opposed to say with the Hero 7 where it would go to a 360 degree shutter angle which magnified the issue). I found that shooting in a higher frame rate like 4K60 and then on say a 24fps timeline, you can add motion estimated motion blur to the clip in Davinci Resolve. The accuracy of the "fake" motion blur will be improved since you are sampling the action at 60fps. And this is not a simple technique like frame blending, it analyzes the motion and objects between frames then blurs it. I've had this ND filter on GoPro issue for years but then I decided to switch to Resolve in 2019 for this one built in feature alone (no need to buy an additional plug in for motion estimated motion blur). You don't need Neat Video either even though it's the best; Resolve has a solid de-noiser built in too. And finally ... Resolve heavily uses your graphics card compared to all other video editors. I use a RTX 2070 Super but cheaper cards will work fine. I was blown away when I could stack up effects, sharpening, grading etc and play it back in real time without pre rendering. Also, the Render Cache feature makes my life easier. I can pre render the entire video in Resolve as I work. Rendering a 5 minute 4K video then just takes like 1 minute or so. Messed up on a title or want to tweak a shot? Just fix that and then the render cache updates for that clip (takes just seconds), then you can render the whole video again ... in like 1 minute. Every time I see Premiere Pro (like in this video) I cringe now, people suffer way too much with that. I do believe there is a plug in for motion estimated motion blur for Premiere Pro. You can then fake the 180 degree shutter angle in post. The higher your frame rate you shot at, the better the result will be. It's not as good as true motion blur but is a great compromise. Also, Peter didn't mention something I noticed ... using an ND filter on the GoPro even in great outdoor lighting actually brings out a lot of noise in your shadows, effective dynamic range is reduced slightly. So my method of using motion estimated motion blur and ditching ND filters on GoPro for action shots is the best way to go overall for now. One more thing, I use an xRite Color Checker Passport Video as a color and contrast reference to assist with making my own corrective LUT files from scratch in Resolve to help get started with camera matching. I shoot in Protune on the GoPro, low sharpness, GoPro color (flat color produces a weird pink tint in the shadows that is excessively detrimental to your image when removed and makes reds look bad), native white balance, and usually -0.5 EV. By fixing the tint and white balance then using the color and contrast swatches on the color chart I can get to more of a natural or cinematic look that surpasses the highly saturated "video" look GoPros are known for. It's not perfect, 10 bit recording on future GoPro cameras could improve this but that is not likely a feature we will ever see. For now though, I have good methods that maximize what I can get out of this tiny camera. I literally just figured out the native white balance plus GoPro color combination yesterday, previously I used native white balance and flat color. I verified on the waveform that flat color really doesn't give you much more dynamic range, basically it's not worth it; you tend to have to add contrast or an s curve back in anyway and color suffers a lot due to the lower bit depth / steps of color recorded in the 8 bit file :)

Very complete and easy to understand review. I'm a gopro hero 9 black user since a year ago. I totally agree if the video recording is bad if there is low light and my experience lately, my camera often stops recording at certain minutes and if recording at high resolution it will quickly heat up and turn itself off. are you also experiencing the same thing?

I think the cropping with hypersmooth and horizon leveling is overstated. 4k is actually 8.3megapixels so that is why they added the 20megapixel sensor so that after all the stablization and cropping you are left with 4k or 5k. Otherwise what would be the point of the 20mp sensor? Just for photos?

Great review! Your thoughs are my ones. The Bad low light quality and the high crop makes the image look horrible. Cause by that i returned my one. Im also disappointed by the hdmi-outout delay. They didn't improve it since the hero 7. It's faster wit turning off the stabilization, but it's still not even close to real time and useless for me.
