    I think this is one of the McElroy things I connect with the most, that "90's white kid who's family is poor, but not like "eats shoes" poor" where you are like able to have a SNES for Crimbo but you wear your older sibs shoes after they grow out of them and it has a profound effect on how you see the world. Like to this day, I who am a grown ass man, still think off brand pouches of fruit snacks shaped like dinosaurs are 1) Totally The Shit and 2) Something I will eat a whole box off like I'm a Roman senator. All I need is for someone to take their top off and oil up, and feed me them while I lounge on a divan and feel VERY good about it because I can eat more than one pouch at a time.

    At my school In Toronto the currency was this Korean dried ramen snack. It’s basically instant ramen except you’re not supposed to cook it, you just crumble up the noodles and sprinkle the spices over and eat it raw, it’s absolutely delicious. But anyway, only one girl in the whole class knew where to get them, and I was obsessed with them so every time she had them I would literally beg her to tell me where she got them. At one point she went on a power trip getting people to throw out her garbage and stuff just for some noodle crumbs 😭 In the end I did find out where she got them, a local galleria which is a Korean grocery store. But even then because my family never shopped there I could only beg my mom to let me go there and get some but she wouldn’t. It wasn’t until I was in high school that I was finally able to get my hands on them regularly and even though I’m now an adult that could go buy them whenever I want at a store that’s like 15 minutes from where I live, they still feel like a valuable commodity to me when I do get them 😂 Now if only they weren’t jam packed with salt and preservatives I might be able to live rich and eat them every day. I guess in that sense they really are still valuable. You can only eat one every once in a while or you might give yourself a heart attack 😂😂

I hope you can start to do your own projects on top of the animatics, because I'd love to see more of your own ideas!

  • @Abigail-hu5wf

    @Abigail-hu5wf

    HOW COULD I FORGET THE HANDS?! For those unaware, during "Gom Jabbar", someone pointed out that Geo had gone to the extra effort of considering that folks with darker skin typically have relatively fairer skin on their hands and feet! Something almost NO animators consider or remember, even big-name producers. Btw the reason why palmar and plantar skin tends to be lighter is because palmar and plantar skin is much thicker than other skin (it's histologically called "thick skin", no less). This is important, because the way melanin works in humans is that a kind of cell called a melanocyte produces melanin-containing "granules", and pushes them into skin cells as those skin cells age and rise up the layers of skin. Over time, those melanin granules are slowly broken down, turning them colourless, as a way of essentially preventing the skin from becoming SO dark that it blocks the ability of the skin to produce vitamin D. It's a balancing act: protection from the sun, but also you need SOME UV otherwise you get rickets and stuff. People with eumelanistic skin (literally "good + melanin", darker skin) have the "baseline" or closest to "original" version of this gene: it works in the same way as in our distant human-ancestors. People with low-melanin skin, however, have a mutant version of this gene that is MUCH more aggressive, destroying melanin granules extremely quickly and leaving the skin cells as a pale translucent whitish colour that allows the reddish hues of muscles and blood vessels under the skin to shine through, producing a faintly pink colour. This is because those people (of whom I'm one lol) have ancestors who moved to higher latitudes where UV light is much weaker for most of the year. Because it's so weak, the natural, normal eumelanistic skin tone was STILL too dark for those people to produce healthy amounts of vitamin D, so a more active variant of the melanin degrading gene evolved. However, since UV can get a lot higher in the summer of those high-latitude regions, the mutations in question are UV-dependent: during high exposure to UV light, melanin granule degradation slows temporarily to provide more protection (tanning). Since palmar (hand palm) and plantar (foot sole) skin are thicker, the cells moving up through the layers of thick skin have more time for those melanin granules to be destroyed before the cells die and become part of your protective epidermal layer. Therefore, in eumelanistic skin (which have a baseline higher level of non-destroyed granules), that extra time is enough to make a visually-noticeable difference between the thin skin of the rest of the body and the thicker, more melanin-degraded, skin of the hands and feet. However, in non-eumelanistic skin, the melanin levels are so degraded ALREADY that the difference is barely noticeable unless that person's body is undergoing that tanning process. This is also why it's sliiightly noticeable in folks with more mid-tone/olive-tone/etc skin: they have a higher baseline. This is also why it's fucking bonkers to me that people suggest there's a gene connecting fuckin... skin tone and IQ or whatever. Like... dude no. Have you considered that Racism Is Bad and your theory has absolutely no logical basis???? Like... what the fuck gene could simultaneously control both intelligence AND how fast melanin degrades?? (And before anyone with neuro knowledge says "but what about neural crest cells?", remember that it's not the melanocytes doing the degradation, it's the keratinocytes themselves which are NOT derived from neural crest cells and therefore have no connection with the neurulation process and a mutation in them could NOT realistically affect the brain in that fashion. Also, that's not how anything works lmao) Sorry for going off on that lol but histology is very cool and I hope people enjoyed the explanation. Also, *fuck racism,* it has zero biological basis and now you know why.

    @@Abigail-hu5wf I knew that "plantar" meant foot skin (at least I think I did, I've heard lots of people talk about plantar warts & the like) but had no idea that the hands had a term called "palmar". That, along with everything else you said, was pretty damn interesting to read! Thanks!

  • @Abigail-hu5wf

    @Abigail-hu5wf

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@travisshallenberger9486 Yeah! In medicine, "dorsal" means "on the back side of", so the opposite surface of both your hands and feet are called the "dorsal surfaces". So, if I were referring to a wound on the top of a person's foot, I would call it a wound to the "dorsal surface of left foot" or similar. Vs if I were talking about a cut to the base of someone's thumb, I might say "laceration to the palmar surface of right hand medial to thenar eminence", where the thenar eminence is that lil lump of muscle that connects your thumb to the rest of your palm. Medicine has it's own hyper-specific language to refer to the locations of different things on the body. I actually HIGHLY recommend that you watch a youtube video on "Anatomical Locations and Directions", because they're all aimed at first-week-of-med-school students (which means almost anyone can understand them even without a science background) and because your doctor or nurse in the future will _fucking love you._ If you come into the hospital complaining of pain in your lower limb, and you can say "I'm feeling acute, stabbing pains deep within the lateral compartment of right mid-thigh", they will immediately be able to start treatment instead of spending 10 minutes playing "let's translate the patient's vague descriptions into a muscle or nerve we can figure is probably the culprit". Once you know the difference between "medial and lateral" or between "flexion and extension", you will probably find that every single appointment to see a physiotherapist or orthopaedics specialist will go about twice as quick and ten times as painlessly lol.

    I do greatly enjoy Justin's shirt in this. I KNOW that pattern, but for the life of me I can't remember where I've seen that pattern...

    Wild to me how people's natural body odour is a good indicator of compatibility for both friends and partners. We should get rid of perfumes and colognes and just sniff each other before we get to know people. Would save a lot of time if we just bypassed smalltalk and then learnt about each other's personalities after getting a baseline. Would revolutionise speed dating, put an end to having to pretend to like your friend Greg and you know why Judith from HR is being a dick to you.
