Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 vs Asymmetric 5 vs Vector 4Seasons Gen 3 - In Depth Test

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The new Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 has been launched, and is Goodyears latest ultra high performance summer tyre.
The Asymmetric 6 is the natural rival to tyres such as the Michelin Pilot Sport 5, Bridgestone Potenza Sport and Pirelli P Zero PZ4.
Here's the Tyre Reviews in depth tyre test comparing the Asymmetric 6 to the predecessor, the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5, AND the All Season / All Weather Goodyear Vector 4Seasons Gen-3.
All three sets of tires are tested in dry and wet handling, dry and wet braking, noise and comfort, rolling resistance and aquaplaning to give you a full overview on how each tyre performs.
We use a Tesla Model 3 Performance for testing, but the new Goodyear is intended for both internal combustion and electric vehicles.
Any questions or comments, please ask below!

Who would guess my favorite tire reviews would come from a British guy that lives in America that tests tires in Sweden, France, and middle nowhere Texas on tires that aren't even always available in my market. It's a remarkably interesting to see someone that enjoys what they do being able to share information on something that we all use.

This video i‘ve been waiting for, thank you very much! I am very pleased to see that AS6 is an improved version of AS5, especially in rolling resistance which propably means less fuel consumption and in our days its a serious fact concerning oil prices. On the other hand i was expecting for a summer tire to be more improved in the dry conditions, but it seems from your test results that this is happening more in the wet conditions. I am very close to buy one set of AS6, after seeing and your next comparition with PS5. I am looking forward for that. Thanks again jonathan for your good work !!! congrats!!!

Knowing that the Asymmetric 6 has come with improvements, if we can get it at the same price as the 5s, it will be, without a doubt, the best price-perfomance tire in it's segment. And that's great news for me as a 5 fan.

Always a fantastic job, thank you. I think the case for all weather tyres in the UK is becoming more and more important. Because its not all about their performance in the snow, but also in temperatures below 7 degrees and we have almost 6 months per year when we are below that. Finally, a test that compare 4 season tire to summer tires. The difference is so small that most summer tires would probably perform worse than the Vector 4Seasons. It would be great to include the best 4 season tires (like Vredestein Quatrac, Goodyear Vector 4Seasons, Michelin CrossClimate) in all summer tire tests as I expect these to be better than most summer tires. For example, my experience is that the Vredestein Quatrac is cornering much better than the Hankook Ventus Prime 3 on a Golf MK4 1.8t (testing on dry tarmac in a hot summer day). It is so good that I will probably go to track days with the Quatrac.

Hello Jo’, great job as always! I was wondering if you could organize some kind of crash test for tires with different elements to determine their strength? Why I asking this? Because I bought the T005 since its release several times and sometimes it died for undetermined reasons. It is certainly a good tire but not the strongest. I think it's important for ordinary consumers, especially on a little budget, to have a solid tire to cope with sometimes degraded driving conditions (our taxes don't always go into road maintenance 😅!). Good in the dry but of course there are limits, you cannot have everything in one tyre. But if you need a good all around tyre, it's a good choice. I.e., to directly compare the same model in high vs low profile. I've seen your performance summer tyre test in different wheel sizes, but all of them were still low profile tyres. I'm faced with deciding on the tyre set for my new car, which has a very high profile tyres (225/60 R18 vs 215/45 R17 on my previous car). I'd love to go with CrossClimate 2, but I'm worried that it will be too floaty feeling due to the height of the sidewall - wondering if it's something I'll notice.

I'm running Michelin Cross Climate 2 and, for me, this all season tyre works excellently. It never feels lacking in any department (albeit I have no way of testing braking distances etc), and is noticeably more comfortable and quiet than the tyres it replaced. Although I'm running them on a humble A3 TDi, they feel good enough that I think they would also be OK on something with more performance, like my previous Golf R. I would not argue with the two tyre set approach (I've done it in the past) but the UK has the weirdest of climates and a tyre that is decent at everything works better for me than a summer tyre in a heavy downpour, a winter tyre on a particularly mild day etc.

  • @MrRedRye

If you could guarantee several months of constant weather it would be sensible to go with two sets of tyres. As you say, in the UK when you can have 4 seasons in a day, it's just easier to go with the best compromise for every weather condition. I'm starting to think these great all-season tyres are best for everything except high performance cars.

Another informative video. 👍🏻 Only partly on subject: For my rear wheel drive sedan, with improved suspension and excellent wheel-alignment, I went with an old Pirelli P Zero recipe for high-performance RWD cars, but with Goodyear Eagle F1 tyres. I have 245mm Eagle F1 Directional 5s on the front, and put 275mm Eagle F1 Asymmetrical 5s (as compared in this video) on the rear. It has felt like an excellent combination to me, and may be better than asymmetrical tyres all round, in the wet. All four tyres are wearing evenly, and so far I’ve used less than half of the usable front tyres’ tread depth, for 40,000km, which seems excellent for such grippy tyres. These two version 5s of the Eagle F1 have identical UTQG ratings. Do you think they’re made of the same or very similar compound? Do you think this is a good tyre combination? 🚙

Although not included on this test, I have the F1 Supersport. Previously on Asymmetric 5. On wet weather the Asymmetric 5 gave more confidence than the Supersport, however on dry weather the Supersport will run rings round the Asymmetric 5. Mind boggling grip on dry weather, literally will not break traction. For UK weather though I think the Asymmetric 6 looks to be the winner.

Talking about the "right choice" when purchasing new tyres next season: The MX-5 is a very lightweight convertible. I was driving now the Michelin 4s on my bmw in 235/40 R18 and I think it was an amazing tyre. Now I tried the asymmetric 6 in 245/35 R18. I think that the grip on the asymmetric 6 is very good, as good as the 4s if not a little bit better. But the 4s is the better tyre when heat comes in to the tyre. I felt like the Goodyear gave up some grip earlier than the 4s and the 4s steering felt a tiny bit more sporty. How would you compare the asymmetric 6 to the Goodyear eagle_f1_supersport? If we take the data from your tests, there shouldn't be that much difference right? Best regards

I'm considering DWS06+ and there's a Michelin tire I think the AS4. Had to go back to the 265 DWS06 staggered rears. A Nokian WRG4 front driver side and a BF Goodrich Comp 2 A/S. The Nokia WRG4 had over 50k miles and only the rear blew from hitting a sharp pot hole. The front had a bubble. The set did well going through winter and hitting pot holes through Baltimore. Would buy again.

I have to correct you on the db thing. 3 db more is not twice the sound pressure. Here is how it works, and you can probably see why there is the confusion about why people might think 3 db is twice the sound pressure. It takes twice the power to increase sound by 3 db i,e if 103 db takes 50 watts, an increase to 106 db takes 100 watts. That is however not the same as twice the SPL or twice as loud. In fact, it is not that much in terms of how the human ear perceives an increase in SPL. To double the sound pressure level, it takes 6 db. Again, that is not the same as what we hear as twice as loud. It means that the amplitude or physical energy in the sound waves are now doubled what they were. So 103 to 109 db for example is twice the SPL. Now as far as what we perceive as twice as loud psychoacoustically is quite different. It takes a whopping 10 db to increase volume so that we perceive it as twice as loud. When talking about going from 72 to 70 db, while there is a difference, it's actually not that big. What often makes a difference in terms of tyre noise, is where the frequency is. The Bridgestone Potenza S001 for the GTI is probably one of the worst shoes I've ever had the misfortune of trying. It has a lot of white noise in the 800 to 3000 hz range, right where we are very sensitive. Dreadful tyre from a noise perspective.

I've recently had a full set of Asymmetric 5's fitted to my Audi and while they handle well, the seemingly high rolling resistance is causing quite a drop in fuel economy. I've had Pilot Sport 4, Nexen SU1 and Vredestein Wintrac Xtreme S previous to these. I generally ran those at about 40-42psi which felt good and the car drove well. Since changing to Asymmetric 5 it seems like the car drags more and the fuel economy plummeted. Have increased to about 46psi up front and 44 in the rear which has brought it closer to previous, but I'm reluctant to go much higher than that. Alignment was checked during tyre fitting and all parameters were in the green.

I'm a fan and super happy user of the Asymmetric 5s, now needing to buy new tires for a new car, I'm having mixed feelings about the 6... you can see from the thread design that they've increased the size of the blocks, which must be the cause for better dry handling and more aquaplaning. I honestly think 90% of the time a high performance tire will stand out as much safer than a medium tier tire, on the wet. In the dry the limit is so high that most users will not even get close to experiencing it. On a very wet, fast bend on an Italian highway, I think I might still want to have the 5s...
