Exactly, you can have better range too. I think the most important feature of the EV tire is the silence, if this feature is well resolved, I'm sure the other aspects are being taken care by the manufacturer.

@@dagame81790 after 30 MPH or so, flooring it shouldn't do much to the tires unless your going around a turn or you have a really powerful EV. So just save it for highway passing and keep everything else under the load limits of the tire.

I keep our 2023 Tesla Model 3 in chill mode, keep the tire pressure at recommended levels, and rotate as required No problem with excessive tire wear.

My 2018 Chevy Bolt is only 3500 lbs, so about what a premium version of the Honda Accord tags in at. It does have healthy torque relative to eco-cars but not compared to some of the vehicles in that weight class. I drive it mostly like a grandma so the torque is only there if you have your foot in it. I just put on some all-season touring tires and they are quieter than the LRR OEM Michelin tires. If there is a fuel economy difference, it is small enough for me not to notice and I pay attention. The Hummer or some of those other examples, is a point well taken.

Also, added air pressure raises the hydroplaning speed.

The thing that would stop tire manufacturers from charging more for electric vehicle tires is other tire manufacturers. Higher prices tend to be a signal for other manufacturers to enter that segment.

Everything else is more expensive with EVs so I think the industry will enter that segment with much higher prices once everything balances out. There will be a lot of changes that EVs bring and unfortunately the big players will use this to make more money in every way they can.

Weird Hankook is in the background and was also the Engineering Explained video posted on same day…. Even the 4 points they make are the same…

Yep. The tire companies want to milk the EV market like there's no tomorrow with marketing and market segmentation. It will peobably fail because: 1) EVs are getting lighter 2) people dont care about range on a daily basis.

There are winter EV versions and I have them in Hakkapeliitta 10 EV studded and R5 EV friction top rated

I put Pirelli P6 tires on my Ford Focus Electric when the original Michelin wore out near 35k miles. I rotated them every 6k miles and they wore perfectly. The Pirelli are a much quieter tire and range did not really change any noticeable amount. Now with over 30k on the Pirellies, they still look like they have a lot of life left in them with rotations every 10k miles. I am aware of the increased wear as when put down the peddle, the only noise I hear is the front tires ripping. So, I just drive very aggressively and the tires last far longer. I am hoping to get at least another 30k out of this $600 set of tires. My car only weighs about 400 lbs more than the gas version, so pretty close and load range is fine. I have zero complaints about this rather inexpensive set of tires.

Thanks for the content. Can you say a little about snow tires for EVs and tire choices for plug in hybrids that are run mostly on electric?

plug in mostly on electric you need to drive more often otherwise the gas in it will gel and ruin the motor

I have a Tesla Model 3. I have Pirelli P-Zero All Season Electric tires. The word "electric" is part of the description. They are doing really well after 6 months of use and evaluation. So I recommend these.

just got those handkook Evo on my model Y performance, yesterday. Huge reduction in road noise and feels way better on the road. I’m a fan so far.

i put e primacy on my staria van and its great its super quiet and have good rolling resistance.

Good Video! Hopefully there will continue to be enough competition in the tire market to keep prices reasonable, even if they prices do rase a bit for extra capability of EV tires and for inflation. I predict this will be the case.

@@directorjustin I've been a fan of his for years and am very disappointed CNET has reduced his visibility on projects and reports. I used to watch his segment on cars years ago. One of his best lines was something like, "This car is ugly at no extra charge." May not be the exact quote, but you get the idea. His reports were factual and if he didn't know something, he would admit it instead of wild speculations. The man speaks my language!

Still on my 2015 e-Golf’s original tires so with 7+ years & at 65K+ miles on ‘em, tried looking for EV tires. Couldn’t find dealers listing LRR or load (HL) as filter. Tire dealers need to get in the game and add such filters to their websites.

how much tread life do you have left?

Hybrids have a similar consideration. My 2015 Accord hybrid came with "Low Rolling Resistance" tires, that are probably pretty similar to the EV tires you describe. I replaced them with standard Continental tires of the same size, since new LRR tires would have been twice the cost of the Continentals. Even at 40 lbs inflation pressure, my fuel economy dropped by 8-10%.

Michelin energy saver in the summer and Nokians in the winter. Did wonders for my 2017 ioniq ev which is advertised as 200km range. I got 270

It’s interesting to see Hankook in the thumbnail. They sponsored Engineering Explained‘s video on the exact same topic.

1. Rolling resistance: Less is more efficient for any round object, bearings, tires, etc. - Just ask the railroad. 2. Grip: Varies with surface conditions, limits torque on tires on all vehicles. - A good driver adjusts for conditions, everything is not a race. 3. Tread Wear: Mostly controlled by driver. Drag Racers burn up a lot of tires. Most good tires have a tread wear warranty. By specifying certain types of tires EVs try to get better mileage and possibly range to compete. These tires would help any vehicle increase efficiency.

What about the all weather, all season, snow tire tread - what are the road condition ratings for EV specific tires?

I’m glad I watched this. I’ve seen Michelin on all teslas, but my new model 3 came with Hankook. I thought I was getting shortchanged but now that I’ve seen this video, I know I actually got the best possible standard.

HELP! What is the best way to extend range of a EV CAR? Should I change registration from HIGH to LOW when I’m traveling on the road or keep it in HIGH generation mode. What do you suggest?

Driving gently will make any tire last. I have 50,000 miles on the original set of Ecopia 422 Plus tires on my e-Golf and I expect to get another 10,000 miles out them.I do rotate every 10,000 miles.

@@bradhaines3142 Weight is one factor, but aerodynamics is also important. EVs are so energy-efficient that small things like this, which don't matter much for ICE cars, increase in importance. EV wheels can generally sacrifice airflow for improved aerodynamics because disc brake cooling is much less important given the availability of regenerative braking. Some such wheels would be unsafe in some conditions on an ICE car.

What's the price difference, does anyone know.

Our EV weighs less than most new gas vehicles that Americans buy. It is not set up to scream to 60 from standstill in the blink of an eye but rather to keep up with gas traffic. What the manufacturer has done is put ludicrously oversized low profile wheels and tyres on it. I am researching dropping the tyres from 19 inch to 17 inch rims and going from 50 to 60 sidewall ratio. This will reduce noise, increase ride comfort and potentially increase economy. Oh, and the tyres are 30% cheaper too like for like. I am just wondering how I can do this without invalidating my insurance here in the UK.

THANK YOU for saying EVs don't have to have "electric car tires". I saw pre-mature wear problems when the first gen Prius came out in 2001 in the US. You had to get EXTRA LOAD tires for it. It could wear out standard load tires to the cords in 10K miles especially if you didn't rotate them. Tire companies came with with EV tires to make more money, that's the main reason. You just gotta know the tire specs which most people don't.

Regular tire rotations are required if you’re trying to receive a credit for your worn tires before the rated mileage was reached. This is a manufacturer’s warranty that the tire shop gives you and instant credit when replacing tires. L

Hi! The recent price of Michelin Primacy tires for our 130,000-mile Tesla model S at Costco from two plus years ago saw the tire prices for the same thing rise from about $900 to $1100+. The house (business?) always wins. Get used to it.

I've got a Tesla model 3 std range. It's only 100lbs more than a Toyota Camry.

To be fair, there are plenty of ICE light-duty vehicles that are actually heavier than the average EV, look at the IRS Section 179 rule for the $25k deduction on business-use vehicles - which must be 6,000 lbs (but under 14k lbs). I was surprised my Model Y is too light to qualify but my Pacifica Minivan does - too bad that is mostly a kid hauler/purse on wheels and not a legit business expense. LOL

As to the last point, even if prices don't go up, tyre life may deliberately go down. If tyres are the only maintenance expense you have, tyre manufacturers may lower longevity so they have to be replaced more often.... It's happened before with so many other products designed for "planned obsolescence"

Cheap tyre for ICE already doing that for decades it's worn out fast, but we have options but be ready to fork out more for tyre like Michelin. When I gety new car it's come with Silverstone tyre that's last fir 2 years before I replaced it with Michelin that I still use regularly and still not wear out after 4 years.

The EPA should step in on this. If rolling resistance is important, then longevity should be important. Both effect energy usage as manufacturing tires costs a lot of energy.

I agree with the other comments. For a small EV (Nissan leaf, kona electric) with over 175,000 km between them. I just bought Michelin summer tires when on sale and I had excellent results and longevity. (I do have a set of winter tires from previous ICE car) Large corporations will always hype and raise prices for a pr gimmick.

How should I rotate my tires if the tires are different sizes in front and back? Also you should do a video on spare tires for an emergency as none of these cars come with a spare.

And rotating them side to side ONLY WORKS if they’re not directional tires. If you see any writing on the side with the word “rotation” and an arrow symbol, your tires are directional and would only be rotated from front to back. Which you obviously cannot do since your tire sizes are staggered. As far as your spare tire comment - if you really need one, I would buy a single wheel and tire and keep it in your trunk. But if you’re good with tire monitoring yourself, you may never run into an instance where you absolutely need a spare tire.

On the topic of tire rotations, it's funny how Tesla used to recommend rotations at 10,000 to 12,000 miles, then later reduced it to 6,250 miles. It's like no one at Tesla knew enough about auto tires to realize they need rotating on any vehicle, to get the longest life out of them.

They used the cheapest tires possible to save money. That doesn’t mean they’re the best choice.

These tires were released with a blitz of people saying they were the greatest tires for EVs. It's a year later and it's tough to find examples of people who purchased these leaving reviews.

Brian pro tip you said most people don't rotate their tires, when the dealership changes your oil have them rotate your tires, my GMC dealership does it for free well its included in the $60 full synthetic oil change, that way its done on a regular basis.

​@@Wee_L_LR tires tend to wear a little more or less inside, outside or all over compared to the other tires, like turning front tires compared to not turning rear tires, that why people rotate tires to try to keep the wear the same as possible so the alignment doesn't need adjusting, worn tires can make a car out of alignment and vise versa, an out of aligned vehicle can wear down tires unevenly. I guess non-US vehicles tire always wear evenly and get aligned regularly say with every oil change? Most don't rotate tire here in the US because its an added expense but since its free at my GMC dealership, (they say its free but the price is just added into the oil change like all "free" things, the price is just hidden). I know they are actually rotating my tires because I have a puncture in one of my tires and its a slow leak and I can monitor the slowly leaking tire, (about 1ib every few weeks) on my digital pressure readout on the driver display proving they moved the tire

A Tesla Model 3 weighs about 3,650 pounds. A new 330 weighs about 3,400. A fully loaded Camry weighs about 3,600. Not a huge difference in weight. The problem is vehicles that are too big...like the Hummer or Ford Lightning. It's a silly use of the technology if the goal is to reduce waste.

I am thinking of getting shares in Continental, Michelin etc

What about hybrids?

Attractive ideas - I'm looking forward to the studies that show whether the tire changes make any difference, or whether it's just hype.

European standards require you to list rolling resistance and noice.

About rotating tires on EV's... The idea is good, but on most EV's, tire dimensions are different on the front wheels compared to the rear wheels. This varies, depending on whether you have two wheel drive or four wheel drive, on weight distribution, torque delivery and handling characteristics. So, don't rotate them without checking dimensions and what your specific EV is rated for. Here are some characteristics: Feature Front Tires Rear Tires Weight distribution Stronger tread and sidewalls Softer tread compound Torque delivery Wider tread pattern Narrower tread pattern Handling Stiffer tread compound Softer tread compound Personally, I would recommend leaving all tire related issues to the experts...

What we want is an actual comparison test of various EV-specific tires, not a promo for Hankook!

EVs use tires around 35% more then ICE tires for the same distance, this could have been mentioned.

They dont work best with different tires. Most of these EV tires give up grip on dry wet snow for range. This could make the difference between an accident or a near miss.

With a comparable car they are usually only a couple hundred pounds more. For example a Toyota Camry weights in on average 3,450lb while a Tesla model 3 which is slightly larger would weigh on average 3,750lb.

You dont need «ev tyres». All tyres come with a load rating. You need a good tyre that handles, stops quickly and remove water efficiently - with the correct load rating for whatever car you have.

I wonder if you might have added the regen braking wear on EV tyres - in an ICE car the braking is less as the car slows to lights and junctions. In an EV, especially with the highest level of regen selected, this slowing happens over a shorter distance, causing more wear. Great for the range, not so for the tread.

Regen braking wear on tires? How is braking less on an ICE car, it is wearing out the brakes and the effect of braking on either car would be the same.

@@andrewbell8837 I don't think so. Regen is akin to braking hard to a stop compared to coasting to a stop. This is not simply the equation for stopping a mass from a certain velocity, it's the time taken/allowed, to stop. On an atomic level, I guess the way the friction breaks down the rubber compound - the heat created by the resistance, stripping off electrons. less heat = less breakdown of the compound. Maybe consider the situation in reverse - hard acceleration = hard wear (which is also a thing with EVs). The i-pedal mode in my EV6 is fairly harsh. There's no gliding to the lights on this setting.

I don’t see the point of paying 1600+ for a special set of tires if you’re just going to burn through them every 30k miles. I got a set of 4 installed for 500 on my model 3 performance work just as good as the stock ones 😅

It helps, for normal driving. It will change the driving characteristic of the whole car if you want to push its limits. As long as the psi isn't at or exceeding the pressure maximum on the tire sidewall there shouldn't be any danger.

@@XX-166 My Model 3 says to inflate to 42psi. That's what I do, and the two sets of tires I've bought so far have done fine.

Within 9 months time; 8k miles… replaced the OEM Hankook tires, and again replaced the warranty set… all eight (8) tires suffered side belt. “Bulges”… these EV rated tires do not do well on Michigan highways. Most highways are riddled with bumps and cracks; causing a rough ride and extra stress on the tires. Unfortunately, I went ahead paid out of pocket for a different manufacturer. 22k miles later with no tire issues. If buying aftermarket tires, always consider the road hazard warranty! Especially when the manufacturer will not stand by their products… “cough!!! Hankook!” With all that said, tires are designed for vehicles as elaborately explained in the video, not around road conditions. Know your roads and seasonal conditions, find the dependable tires that keep you safe!

EVs vary just like conventional cars. A Chevy Volt isn't overly heavy nor fast. Any sedan tire will work fine. Sure, a low rolling resistance tire might add a bit of range, but it would also add 1 mpg or so to a typical sedan. More expensive tires are typically quieter as well and will make a difference in any car unsurprisingly. Also, any EV car will likely weigh similarly to an SUV, which the tires it uses will be designed to support.

It's amazing how much tires can affect range on EVs. Tires alone can make a 20-30% difference in range because rolling resistance is one of the main sources of energy loss in electric vehicles. I swapped Michelin Pilot Sport 4S out on my Model 3 Performance with the LR AWD 3's Tesla-spec Michelin MXM4 tires and saw a 23% improvement in range. Same thing with my EV6 GT. Went from Goodyear Eagle F1 Assymetric5 SUV to Hankook Ion Evo AS SUV and see a 30% improvement in range.

I am real happy with the PIRELLI P ZERO AS PLUS ELECT’S I purchased. So quiet, with increased range from the oem tires on my M3. It will be interesting to see how they do this winter in Michigan.

Maybe you can address hybrid tires.

Not sure about weight. My BMW i4 is only a bit heavier than my Alfa Romeo Giulia QV, which by the way has similar wear to my BMW!. I think you are exaggerating the differences. SUVs are also heavy.

No mention of wheel alignment price after you put on your new EV tires??? The cost is about 3X larger than a regular wheel alignment because it is much more work. Don’t be surprised!!!

Since posting my previous comment, I have still not received an acknowledgment, much less a reply, from Hankook and Sailun on where and when one can buy their EV tires.

Too much opinion and speculation, not enough solid facts. The only thing he gets right is that specialty electric car tires do have a sound absorption layer on the inside of the tire to reduce noise, and that adds to their cost (and makes fixing flats much more costly).

At minute 4 it sounds like you were about to give a "but" but then it cut out...

Brakes get very little use on my Tesla model 3. Regen charges the battery when you want to slow down. One pedal driving requires little use of brakes. Similar with many other electric cars.

Sooo if I buy electric car tires for my regular car seems like they would last almost forever? :)
