Golden Hinde

This is the 1973 reconstruction of Francis Drake's "Golden Hind" that girdled the globe 1577-80. The ship is a well-established tourist attraction located at St Mary Overie Dock, adjacent to Borough Market, some four minutes walk from London Bridge Tube Station. I outline the history and features of this vessel.

I acted as Mate aboard this boat for the six month voyage from Taura Harbour, Japan to England arriving in June 1980, captained by Peter Haward, perhaps the most well known yacht delivery skipper of the period. During the first leg of the voyage, Japan to Hong Kong, we had difficulty with steering the vessel due to an undersized rudder, this was improved during the stop-over by increasing the size of the rudder but it was still a handful, especially downwind. Drakes boat would have been fitted with an early version of a whipstaff and I believe that this vessel was originally fitted with a whipstaff but proved unmanageable. Since our return to the UK I understand that the steering system has now been replaced with an electric-hydraulic conversion.

Thank you. One man wrote for us, his experience sailing this ship that I included in the Drake Broadside for the Francis Drake Exploration Society.

Would the red and yellow have been as brightly coloured on the real ship?

How very sad that the Sir Francis Drake school in Lewisham is soon to be renamed the twin Oaks. Does that mean we are turning into a nation of land lubbers?
