On The Complete History show this week we are looking at the creation of the Golden Axe franchise, who made it, why it got made and what has happened to it in more recent years.
It's a series with a lot of ups (including in the arcade with the often over looked revenge of death adder game) and the rather obscure 3rd entry which was only ever released in the states via the sega geneses / mega drive online service... very strange
Also, we will not be forgetting about the (100% not a rip off from zelda) Golden Axe Warrior game too. And the long lost Golden Axed game too

I'm sure you've been told this a million times but the reason Japanese devs used aliases in credits was because they were forced to so other companies wouldn't poach them.

I think it's unfair to call Tyris Flare a "token" female character. When I was a girl and teen I loved playing Golden Axe as Tyris and thought she was the coolest. Her character was given the same care as the other two in the first game and her animations are great.

Not to mention she had the most impressive magic spells. Also, Golden Axe is the earliest beat 'em up I can think of which *has* a female character option, so it was hardly a token at the time.

usually they put their real names hidden away in the games codes if you tinker about with it's data. some even put their phone numbers. did you play Dungeons and dragons side scroller games when you were a kid? imo it is the best side scroller game ever. character designs and skills for each characters are just awesome.

Your prayers may have been answered! SEGA just announced five new games from long dormant franchises today, including Golden Axe! We only got about five seconds of gameplay footage, but I'm really intrigued by what we see, and it looks as if the original 3 heroes are back with some slight redesigns. Ax looks more barbariany with some furs and a much bigger sword, Gilius is buff to the point that he looks like a square made of muscle (and I mean that as a compliment, that's how dwarves should look), and Tyris has some kind of double-bladed sword weapon now, which makes her the coolest.

I like the third. I recently made Chaos Lait on the new Soul Calibur 6 game. Imagine it. After the matters of Golden Axe III, Chaos winds up taking the Golden Axe and forced into a new world by the colliding powers of Soul Edge and the Golden Axe pulling him through the Astral Plains. Another venture that must be seen through after his famed fight with the Lord Hellstrike. Also set up a bit of something where a descendant of Chronos, or his tribe, covers his head and face in a hood wrap, takes the Golden Axe and the name of Chaos Lait as he goes forward on his quest.

Think that often tends to happen when you put so much on your original characters, and then try to move onto a new generation. I think that's part of the problem Soul Calibur V had. Thankfully you could take the weapon styles and create some replacements of your own, but also re create older characters no longer there. However there, there were also some slight game mechanic miss steps. Soul Calibur 6 is right where it should be and hopefully may be the return of the franchise's greatness. So far it seems to be. It's an extra good thing because many of the upstairs guys at Namco were ready to leave the franchise in the graveyard.

Indeed. I don't understand either why Golden Axe 3 get so much flak. Although the graphics are worse than the previous two entries, the game mechanics are better and more complex, it has branching paths, combined attacks and magic, more moves, and a great soundtrack. And the story is neither better nor worse than the previous entries. Kind of the same. For me, the best GA game ever.

Little Italy's had Galaga and something else. Pizza Hut had the 4 player wheel version of Off Road, and eventually one of the Teken games. CiCi's had 1941, Raiden I/II, and something else. One of the Dairy Queens had Final Lap.

No, its because Bondi Studios and Rockstar completely destroyed the Australian video game industry. At the time i was actually hoping to become a developer, but all the Australian studios shut down after the whole LA Noire debacle.. Bondi were treating employees like slaves (wouldn't give a dev time off to see his child being born etc etc etc) and Rockstar pretty much shut them down, which caused the entire industry here to crash... After all Bondi were pretty much the top studio.

Yeah. Still really sucks, I love what that prototype looks like, and the idea of the others being re-made... and connected?? Actually I know a guy that worked on Castle Of Illusion before they disbanded - they were actually firing people as the game was winding down, and he got let just before the end - and the team accidentally stomped over some of his facial animation of the main baddy in the end cutscene, dulling down what would have been more impressive, Disney style animation.

This was a superb video retrospective mate. Weirdly I've been on the tubes since 2011 and I'd never come across your channel before. I'm subbed now and look forward to going through the rest of your vids in my spare time. I see you got a SOR retrospective. Looks like that will be my next watch :) I have to say that as a massive fan of the beat em up genre I was never too gaga for the original Golden Axe. I played it in arcades and on the megadrive and while I did like the arcade version the MD port I thought was just ok. I actually prefer 2 over the first but I think that's mostly because it looks nicer. Of the three MD titles I do really like the 3rd. I know you said it didn't measure up as you felt it lost that GA feel but to me I thought it played better as the gameplay was a bit faster and more fluid. GA 3 is the one I go back to the most. My absolute favourite is definitely Revenge of Deathadder. That was a quality beat em up and I can't believe Sega has still to release a home port of it. You would have thought Sega would at least re release it digitally on psn and xbox live like Capcom did with Dungeons & Dragons. Missed opportunity if you ask me.
