One of my favourite mega drive games, I still play it today when I get bored but I never get far, I hope there's a sequel getting made like streets of rage 4

I loved this game. Used to play coop in the PC with friends. 2nd player had to use the mouse. It was such challenge just to walk and make the jumps😂

I was at an arcade with Revenge of Death=Adder precisely once, and though I was disappointed I could not play my main man Gilius I do remember thinking it was pretty cool. And until like 20 years later I had no idea THAT was not Golden Axe II, nor that there was a III or any other spinoffs. Definitely loved the original like few other arcade games; the music and poorly-digitized Conan voice samples and the fact that I could finally win a game on one quarter all really made something magical for me, haha

The Amiga version of Golden Axe was based entirely on the Arcade version, not the Mega Drive version, which you can tell from the background graphics such as the edge of the turtle's shell (being rounded off and identical to the arcade, as opposed to the jagged, tiled mess the Mega Drive's limited hardware had to make do with). It also has the arcade ending and none of the extras featured in the Mega Drive port.

I remember seeing this in the arcade. Popular game... however, Tyris Flare's jump attack could basically get you through the entire game without getting hit and you could cheese the game easily by doing it. A bit like the elbow attack in Double Dragon.

Nice video great job! Couple of things I would note: Goldenaxe 2 is definitely harder than the first one. Not sure where you got that idea the 1st one is a breeze to beat while the 2nd is quite a bit harder. Goldenaxe 3 the magic system is a bit more convoluted than you made out. You only use up all pots if you fill the meter completely. If I remember correctly it works like this: Level 1 is when you fill the first bar and you only use 1 pot (you start with 1 anyway) Level 2 is when the first and 2nd bar are filled and you use 3 pots to get level 2 magic. Level 3 is when you fill all three bars and you use all pots. There's also a whole bunch of team magic. Goldenaxe3 can actually be not bad if you master all the extra moves. A lot of them are extremely OP. I'm not saying it's as good as the previous two games but do give it a chance it has it's moments.

As a kid I found the first game in the series miles harder than the second, although the second was my introduction to the series so I had more experience with it. Good comment all the same. Golden Axe III may look and sound like crap, but once you grasp the mechanics it has quite a lot of depth. It just takes a lot of time and effort to get there and getting there isn't a whole lot of fun.

I guess this would seem weird nowadays, but at the time the arcade machine was considered the definitive canon of the games, so revenge of the death adder was canonically the one and only golden axe 2, with the original creator at the helm. The mega drive games are great but, as a kid at the time, they're not the ones I think of when I think of my cherished Golden Axe experiences.

The C64 version is indeed stunning for the hardware - it looks like the whole bloody game squeezed into a C64. It's an illusion, though- with only one enemy on screen it isn't really Golden Axe, it just looks like it.

Acording to wikipedia about reception of Golden Axe beast rider..."Golden Axe: Beast Rider received "generally unfavorable reviews" on both platforms according to the review aggregation website Metacritic.[11][12] IGN concluded, "This is a game worth avoiding like the plague, even if the classic remains deep and warm within your heart."[22] GamePro called it "poorly designed and utterly mediocre," "a terrible game that feels like a slap in the face to fans of the original franchise."[17] In an editorial titled "Dave talks Golden Axe", Play editor Dave Halverson wrote "The majority of these people (can't call them critics) either didn't complete a fraction of the game, don't understand game design, or just plain suck at games", and that "to score Beast Rider below a 7 is just irresponsible" the main problem is, the devs just turn the blind eye on the fact that they made a coop game intoa single player amazon character, no dwarf(my fav), no barbarian... it was a coop franchise

RE: Golden axe 3, yes, the graphics might be lacking, but it has by far the smoothest, fast-paced and rewarding gameplay I took a huge liking to. The first two parts felt so sluggish after it, like the protagonist was wading through the mud. And the music was great for the hardware the Megadrive offered. Maybe it has departed from the high fantasy themes offered by the first two parts, but that's a question of the taste, not the quality.

The team behind Beast Rider didn't know this, but the correct pronunciation of the amazon character's name is 'Tirris' and not 'Tie-ris' - in Japanese it's ティリス=フレア (Tirisu Furea), but you can also tell from the way it was translated on the original cabinet in the West - the game itself named her Tyris Flare (well, technically Tyris=Flare), but the cabinet named her Tillis-Flayer.

Great breakdown of the history. I would just like them to release Revenge of the Death Adder at least on any console and then work on a new golden axe game. that reboot was really busted. i never knew it existed but once i read about it somewhere i thought i want to play it but after watching that it basically killed the franchise, i dropped any thoughts about playing it. There are so many games that have been ruined by making this transition to true 3D graphics.

No single possible doubt about this. I mean, a barbarian world where everyone, even giant minotaurs, shout "Bleh!" when dying, is certainly the most immersive barbarian world ever... I have always wondered if Golden Axe II was some sort of inner contest between Sega developers back then, to check what exactly the worst possible Genesis sound samples might be...as every single sound effect for this game is just a piece of garbage (while oddly enough, by contrast, the music are pretty decent - pretty generic and poorly inspired as well, even more when compared with the original game ones, yet still with a decent quality).

@@aegisreflector1239 It's actually quite a bit more powerful than those machines. It was just that the graphics look SNES-like so that was an assumption made. Tech had moved on hugely (even for a handheld) by then. In the video, I assume he's referring to the 'zoomed in' graphics - because of the resolution. Because it's powerful this wasn't a problem, unlike the Wonderswan, CPC and Spectrum versions, which have smaller sprites.
