That Rayleigh line "It might not be a bad thing to live a little longer" is especially hard hitting when you realize it's implied Rayleigh tried to commit suicide by drowning/starving out at sea. We're told Hachi met Rayleigh by saving him at sea. But even as an old man, Rayleigh can swim through the Calm Belt like it's nothing. He would've been much younger when he met Hachi. As such, Hachi "saving" him is likely much more about Hachi convincing Rayleigh to keep living, rather than actually saving him from danger.

My headcanom/theory/personal belief as to why Shanks never mentioned his apprenticeship on Roger’s crew is because that would just make Luffy want to join HIS crew even more, something we clearly see him not wanting for Luffy.

Mind you he also as far as we are aware DID NOT know what the rest of the Roger Pirates did about the One Piece, that they arrived too early and that the world is waiting for someone. What Shanks did know was that this boy was alot like his former captain. Too much perhaps for Shanks to be ok with being near at such a young age. Its entirely possible Shanks knows Luffy's real dream, which is something he may have heard Roger speak about (only Yamato is the only confirmed person to sorta connect the dots on this one). So between the similarities between his captain and their shared dream, Shanks would be one to hedge one hell of a bet on Luffy. And if Shanks knows what say Rayleigh knows, Shanks is actually counting on Luffy to do the impossible.

@@thomasallen9974 Considering how much of Roger Shanks was potentially seeing in Luffy, it adds a weight to Shanks telling him to become a great pirate and meet him again. From Luffy's perspective it's "become a great pirate" but from Shank's it starts to read as "You remind me of him, hopefully you'll grow to be like him too"

Honestly with how the Marines acted, Roger laughing at hearing he was the pirate king could also be interpreted as something besides the misspell of his name. To him, being a pirate was to have freedom, and to be crowned the king by the very people hunting him down basically meant that he had finally attained true freedom.

When you brought up Roger's last word to Rayleigh, it just made me think about Hiruluk's speech about how a man only dies when he's forgotten. Gah DAYUM, I love this story so much!

To be fair, Roger was said to be quite the monster when people harmed who he cared about. He might have not harmed civilians, but he definitely had killed many pirates which is why so many people had a grudge with him. Like squardo.

More specifically, Garp talked about Roger eliminating the entire military force of at least one country in retaliation for insults toward his crewmates. Even if he didn't pose a threat to civilians, it isn't hard to understand why regular people who lived during his era might be terrified of him since he could be a walking disaster area depending on his mood.

Think about how the strawhats have been blamed for lots of the things they helped put an end to. I would not be surprised if the same was true about Roger

I believe one of the hidden themes in one piece is that the government classifies every one who seeks to travel and explore the world as pirates. People cannot discern good pirates from bad ones. The term pirate takes different meaning for every character and can change its meaning as the morality of the individual changes.

That's so true! Pedro had actually said that he and his crew started off Zou to explore the world but the World Government dubbed them as pirates. Something similar probably happened to Mihawk too. I bet he was just sailing around fighting strong opponents and because he didn't follow exactly the society's rules, the government dubbed him as a pirate too (Even though this is more my assumption than actual knowledge 😅)

This was never stated. Dont forget that Luffy was classfied as pirate because of Nezumi, the corrupt marine that was piss off by Luffy for beating Arlong and thus screwing his source of corrupt money. Take for example professor Clover. He freely explored the world in search or poneglyphs and was arrested ten times for that crime, but not for piracy, because he did not sail with a pirate flag nor even called himself a pirate. But both Luffy and Roger used or uses a pirate flag (so they are the ones causing problems to themselves, not the world goverment). The real problem here is another. Since the world goverment controls Mary Geoise, they control the safest and easiest way to travel the world, thus ships needs permission of Mary Geoise to traverse the seas (like Noland in the past). But you will only got this permission if you are a important member of a allied nation (like Noland was), if you work for the goverment directly, or if you have money. Since pirates cannot enter there, they defie this rule by entering trough the dangerous passages, but is not a crime to traverse reverse mountain or fishman island. The only two crimes that the goverment fights is Poneglyph research and Piracy (carrying a pirate flag is enough), not traversing the seas. So why was Roger a criminal even if he did not go around screwing random people? Because he sailed with a pirate flag.

Luffy also doesn’t go out of his way to not kill his enemies a lot of the time. He merely doesn’t care if his enemies die or not as long as their malicious ambitions are stopped. Lucci was going to die from his injuries if cp9 didn’t get the funds for his medical treatment. We still don’t know if Kaido is dead and he has launched devil fruit users off islands that only survive by luck.

A thing to remember as well about our favourite GILF Silvers Rayleigh is that when he first met Luffy he tested him. To see if he really was as good as Shanks had told him. Asking him "Do you think you can rule over the seas?" When Luffy replied that isn't what being Pirate King is about that the Pirate King is the most free person in the world is the moment he realised this boy is carrying Rogers spirit.

The man who had wealth, fame and power. Everything you could imagine But most importantly he had absolute freedom

Buggy is Roger's prodigal son. The one who turned his back to Roger's philosophy. Shanks is the good son, the who embodies all that Roger stood for. I see no contradiction with lore here.

In keeping with the trend of learning about Roger through the people who knew him, I think we're in for more when we FINALLY get to Shanks. So far we've only seen flashbacks from adults but Shanks grew up on that ship and we know his death hit him hard. Also, I'm just dying to know what he whispered to him. But alas, who knows if Oda will tell us anything.

I also love the parallels between him and Luffy also go in the sense that we don't ever see his inner monologue, just like luffy

And Choppers goal is to cure every disease thus allowing Luffy to surpass the only thing that took the former Pirate King's freedom. Chopper will allow him to be the most free man in the world. Even more than Joyboy, even more than Roger

11:55 Squard’s crew is an exception to this but I think there might be a misunderstanding if Oda wants to take it back. But Tbh I like Roger being a character like Luffy but a little more deadly, Garp mentions him destroying the army of a nation that insulted his crew. Roger killing the crew of someone who hurt his friend doesn’t make me think less of him, he’s still a better guy than most pirates.

It's a trait that was mostly inherited by other members of his crew. Shanks and the Red Hair Pirates have a very similar philosophy except they are more willing to shrug off insults and only react when real harm is intended.

Here's the thing, Luffy has committed countless atrocities from the common citizens perspective, he raided the One Piece equivalent of a military base and lived! He freed heinous criminals from Impel Down, and punched the supposed "gods" of the world! But we as the audience know WHY he did them. and this is what I'm expecting at the end of OP the entire world having the same hatred and animosity to Luffy as they did with Roger

@@seph_0056 Plenty of people know Luffy as a hero who has done plenty of unambiguously heroic things noted as being especially atypical of pirates. Even ones with a reputation of being tolerant or even protective such as Whitebeard or Shanks don't usually go as far as he does. However, I do think it's very important to note that Luffy is far from a saint. He doesn't have anything like a 'no-kill' policy and doesn't hesitate to use force as a tool in his disposal for the pursuit of freedom similarly to good ol' Gol D. Roger. Just because some of his actions can be viewed as unjustly negative doesn't mean that they are all that way.

It's insane how Oda made such a fictional story as symbolic as it is to the world we live in today. One Piece is quite literally the greatest story ever told.

The way you are so in love with this story really does shine in these videos, you are with out a doubt the best creator in this regard and your videos do nothing but light up the day! 🤙🏻🤙🏻

Roger is like BigFoot. Nobody has seen him and there’s a billion rumors about him. He has become a legend, and inspired people to go out into the world and explore. Bigfoot has also inspired people to explore. People enter the forest to find BigFoot, and enter the sea to find One Piece.

Hands down can't get enough of this One Piece content. Thank you for giving me a deeper understanding and appreciation of this amazing story. Truly feels like each video is a Ted Talk or Lecture by my professors. Every upload is a gem.

What I love about the fact that roger said he wasn’t going to die is that Hiriluk was just like roger in the belief that a man dies when he’s forgotten

Fun idea for a video I’d love to see would be about the build up to Robin proclaiming she wants to live and Luffy ordering “Shoot the flag” your Robin video is fantastic so I think it’d be awesome to show how important flags/Jolly Roger’s are up to that point and the weight behind the order! 🔥 love the videos!

Ain’t nobody gonna claim that Roger was a saint. That much is true. He was pretty volatile when it came to protecting his people and getting retribution. I can imagine that there were no small number of both pirates and soldiers that wound up like Squard in the world.
